Abstract
En optisk fiberkabel har en optisk fiber med en kjerne og en mantel omgitt av en kappe av polymert ; materiale. I et temperaturdetekteringsområde (T1- ] T2) har det polymere materialet en negativ varmeutvidelseskoeffisient (otO), hvis absolutte verdi er større enn varmeutvidelseskoeffisienten (a) i omgivende temperaturområder (TO-T1, T2-T3). Utsatt for stigende temperatur (T), vil kappen kontrahere og forårsake mikrobøyning av den optiske fiber. Lys som går gjennom fibren blir dempet og reflektert, og det reflekterte lys vil bli dempet ytterligere i et oppvarmet område av. fibren. Størrelsen på området og posisjonen langs fibren kan bli fastlagt ved å måle lysets gangtid. Den polymere kappen har en varmeutvidelseskoeffisient slik at det muliggjøres detektering av flere oppvarmede områder. Fiberen demper lyset i et område på 0.01-0.1 dB/m når fibren er i oppvarmet tilstand.
