  59. 63. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound according to Claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, diluent or excipient.
  60. 64. A method of inhibiting a cysteine protease comprising administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of a compound according to Claim 1.
  61. 65. A method according to Claim 64 wherein said cysteine protease is cathepsin K. Z
  62. 66. A method of treating a disease characterized by bone loss comprisinginhibiting said bone loss by administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of a compound according to Claim 1.
  63. 67. A method according to Claim 66 wherein said disease is osteoporosis.
  64. 68. A method according to Claim 66 wherein said disease is periodontitis.
  65. 69. A method according to Claim 66 wherein said disease is gingivitis. /
  66. 70. A method of treating a disease characterized by excessive cartilage or matrix dégradation comprising inhibiting said excessive cartilage or matrix dégradation by administering to a patient in need thereof an effective amount of a compound according to Claim 1.
  67. 71. A method according to Claim 70 wherein said disease is osteoarthritis.
  68. 72. A method according to Claim 70 wherein said disease is rheumatoid arthritis. !
