Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cyclic olefin polymer compound and a method for preparing the same, and more particularly, monomer or cyclopentadiene three, which can be easily and economically prepared by hydrogenating dicyclopentadiene, which occupies a large portion of the C5 fraction of naphtha cracking.
- the present invention relates to a cyclic olefin copolymer prepared by using a monomer obtained through hydrogenation after chemically bonding a molecule through a Diels-Alder reaction and a hydrogenation method.
- this polymer contains olefin groups that do not react with its molecular structure, which is problematic for direct commercial use. Olefin groups are highly reactive and may result in deformation of the resin during melt processing and are also less durable. For this reason, it is not uncommon to use resins containing olefin groups in the polymer chain in industrial sites.
- dicyclopentadiene may be converted to cyclopentadiene at high temperature, followed by Diels-Alder reaction with ethylene or alpha olefin to prepare a norbornene cyclic olefin and copolymerize it with ethylene

- the copolymer thus prepared is called a cycloolefin copolymer (COC) (see Scheme 3).
- COC cycloolefin copolymer
- Norbornene-based monomers can also be prepared by hydrogenation after ROMP reaction as shown at the bottom of Scheme 3 (Masahiro Yamazaki, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical 213 ( 2004 ) 81-87).
- the polymer thus obtained is called a cycloolefin polymer (COP).
- COC cyclic olefin copolymer
- COP cyclic olefin polymer
- Cyclopentadiene spontaneously undergoes a Diels-Alder reaction at room temperature to be converted to dicyclopentadiene (DCPD).
- DCPD dicyclopentadiene
- Dicyclopentadiene may also be subjected to Diels-Alder reaction with cyclopentadiene to produce tricyclopentadiene (TCPD). This reaction can take place continuously and resin production using this reaction is used in industry (see Scheme 5, Chemical Engineering Science 56 (2001) 927-935).
- This Diels-Alder reactant of cyclopentadiene (CPD) itself has two olefin groups.
- One is in the form of the norbornene compound (hereinafter referred to as norbornene type-olefin) and the other is in the form of cyclopentene (hereinafter referred to as cyclopentene type-olefin).
- norbornene type-olefins are known to be more reactive among the two olefin groups.
- the cyclopentene-type olefin group When hydrogen is added in an equivalent amount or more, the cyclopentene-type olefin group also undergoes a hydrogenation reaction with tetrahydrodicyclo. Pentadiene is formed as a byproduct. In other words, since selectivity is controlled by the reaction rate, selectivity is sensitive to reaction conditions, so even when the reaction process is well developed, some degree of unreacted dicyclopentadiene remains ( ⁇ 0.3%) and is a byproduct of tetra Formation of 3% or more of hydrodicyclopentadiene could not be avoided.
- Tetrahedron Letters 2007 , 48 , 8331 report on the results of selective hydrogenation of dicyclopentadiene using nickel metal obtained by reducing nickel acetate in a reactor with NaBH 4 as a catalyst. In this case, 1.1 equivalents of hydrogen were added to implement selectivity, and the reaction product was purified by recrystallization to remove tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene produced as a by-product.
- JCS Perkin I , 1977 , 19 reported a result of selectively hydrogenating tricyclopentadiene using nickel metal obtained by reducing nickel acetate in a reactor with NaBH 4 as a catalyst. In this case too, an equivalent amount of hydrogen was added to implement selectivity, and 0.360 g of nickel acetate was used to hydrogenate 1.5 g of tricyclopentadiene.
