  Seal for mercury vapor apparatus.

To seal vacuum vessels for mercury vapor apparatuses, aluminum strips, aluminum wire or the like have been used in many cases. The strips were either inserted between the smoothly ground sealing surfaces or in special grooves in the sealing surfaces provided for them. Aluminum therefore has the advantage that, because of its great softness, it adapts to all unevenness of the sealing surfaces and does not amalgamate. If small amounts of alkaline substances are present, however, a very lively amalgamation takes place and the sealing material is ultimately destroyed.

According to the invention, instead of aluminum, electrolyte iron is used, which has approximately the same low degree of hardness as aluminum and which is not amalgamated under any circumstances.
