<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Un arbre menant A qui peut être le vilebrequin d'un moteur à combustion interne, porte un volant fixé sur lui par des boulons ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Le fonctionnement est expliqué ci-après ; il doit être bien entendu que l'objet de l'invention téside dans le fait que l'embrayage doit rester auto- matiquement débrayé au-dessous d'une vitesse prédé- terminée de l'arbre menant ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

The present invention relates to friction clutches for the transmission of motive power, and its main object is to provide an arrangement by which the engagement and disengagement of the plates are effected automatically. , depending on the relative speeds of the driving part and the driven part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention mainly consists of a friction clutch having a plate mounted on a threaded part carried by the driven shaft; this plate is pushed by a spring acting so as to bring the plates out of engagement; this apparatus also has centrifugal devices acting in the opposite direction to the thrust of the spring and operating at a predetermined speed of rotation of the driving shaft; this action combats the thrust of the clutch spring and brings the plates into contact so that they rub lightly; the threaded part acts to bring the complete clutch, which is held as long as the drive shaft transmits torque to the driven shaft; but the disengagement occurs automatically if the speed of the driving shaft tends to drop below that of the driven shaft.
The pressure on the friction surfaces is thus always proportional to the torque of the drive plate, so that the greater the torque to be transmitted, the more firmly the plates are engaged.
The invention is applicable to well known types of friction clutches, such as those with multiple plates, single plate, or cone clutches; it is especially useful in automobile transmission devices since it provides for automatic disengagement and a freewheeling effect when the vehicle is driving the engine; the clutch also remains constantly disengaged when the engine is idling below a predetermined speed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By way of example and to facilitate understanding of the description, there is shown in the appended drawing, an axial section of a plate clutch according to the invention and particularly applicable to an automobile,
A drive shaft A, which may be the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, carries a flywheel fixed to it by bolts;
flywheel supports a clutch member C on which is mounted a group of plates D, the other group of plates 1 is wedged on Wn part F, in one piece with a sleeve G; this is mounted on the driven shaft by means of a square thread screw, having a large pitch (preferably 45). A spring K, which tends to push the clutch plates out of engagement, is interposed between part F and part J, the latter forming a fixed stop for the plates,
Two centrifugal devices 1, in the form of a bell lever, are housed 180 ° on each side of the steering wheel ± and are controlled on an arm integral with said steering wheel. We can, of course, provide a larger number of these devices, if desired.
One of the arms of each doorbell lever, is provided with one end turned inwards, in contact with the outer clutch plate, while the other arm L2 is pushed in reverse centrifugal force by a spring. M, the pressure of which can be adjusted by turning the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
bolt! that crosses the periphery of the steering wheel.
A fork Q, cooperating with a thrust collar, is provided to allow the clutch to be actuated positively by means of the usual pedal, if desired,
The operation is explained below; it must be understood that the object of the invention lies in the fact that the clutch must remain automatically disengaged below a predetermined speed of the driving shaft;
must on the other hand be disengaged when the driven shaft tends to exceed the speed of the drive shaft, while or by accelerating the drive shaft above a predetermined speed, the device must be automatically engaged and must stay in gear as long as the drive shaft transmits torque,
The pressure of the Y springs on the arms L2 of the doorbell levers is adjusted so that the spring force is overcome at the desired speed of 200 turns per minute. Consequently, below this speed, the arms L2 are pushed inwards and the arms L1 exert no pressure on the clutch plate.
When the driving shaft A exceeds this speed, the shafts L under the action of the centrifugal force overcome the effect of the springs M, and the arms push the clutch plates slightly into engagement; these transmit their rotational movement to part F and to the sleeve
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The latter is consequently aimed forward on the tree
H which increases the pressure in contact with the plates D and E, this pressure persists as long as there is no slip between them,
During this time the sleeve G has gradually communicated its rotation to the driven shaft H and when there is no longer any slip between the plates D and! shaft .4 rotates at the same speed as shaft A,
This clutch is intended to run in oil and a cover Q is provided with a seal R, Due to the presence of a lubricant, the torque is smooth and progressive, the oil being driven from between trays; shocks and chatter are avoided.
By slowing down the driving shaft A, the thrust tending to keep engaged, is taken by the thread, and the sleeve 1 is unscrewed on the shaft E which brings the plates out of engagement; this disengagement is maintained by the spring K until the speed of the driving shaft IL has again increased /.
In applying the invention to a "dry plate" clutch, a suitable device, such as a dash-pot, can be employed to ensure progressive engagement.
The advantages resulting from the use of a clutch of this type in the transmission of automobiles will be readily appreciated. In the first place. No clutch pedal or other
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
ordering is necessary. The device is engaged automatically when the engine is running above 200 cycles per minute and it is ± ± brayed when the accelerator pedal is released, a "freewheel" effect thus obtained.
