"IMPROVEMENTS IN THE TREATMENT OF CELLULOSIC DERIVATIVES".
This invention relates to the production of white or color drawing effects on dark backgrounds: on. materials consisting of or containing acetate or other esters or ethers of cellulose.
The production of white or weakly colored effects on dark backgrounds on materials consisting of or containing cellulose esters or ethers has in the past presented serious difficulties. to the fact that the. Most of the dyes which produce dark colorings on these materials cannot easily be eroded by ordinary means applied in the printing of textile products. It has now been found that effects of

As reserves or agents capable of preventing the formation of oxidation dyes or of resisting this formation, alkalis, reducing agents or mixtures of alkalis and reducing agents are particularly suitable. Among the alkalis which may be applicable, mention may be made of soda or caustic potash, sodium carbonate, sodium phenolate or other alkali salts.
Among the suitable reducing agents, it has been found that oxalic acid and hydrosulfites, for example sodium hydrosulfite, potassium hydrosulfite or zinc hydrosulfite, give very satisfactory results. The resist can be applied topically to the ester or cellulosic ether material in any convenient manner, which is achieved, for example, by printing the material with suitable cylinders, plates or boards. engraved or embossed or by projecting the agents onto the material by brushing or injection through stencils.
The alkali and (or) the reducing agent or other reserve may be. mixed with thickeners so that they are made suitable for application to materials by

Development of oxidative colorations can be effected by spraying the materials after application of the amine or other aromatic compound and the oxidant or in any other convenient manner. in order to obtain good drawing effects in white or in color, oxidation should only be allowed to take place after the application of the resist comprising the alkali and (or) the oxidant or other agent .
/ ''
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The drawing effects which can be obtained by practicing the present process can in some cases be improved by the addition of aluminum acetate or sodium acetate to the preparation of. resist containing the alkali 'and (or) the reducing agent or other agent or, alternatively, by padding or other impregnation of the fabric with a solution of aluminum acetate or acetate of sodium, before the application of the reserve preparation.
In this way, any tendency towards production of halo effects is reduced.
Color drawing effects can be obtained by adding to the resist a coloring material having some affinity for the material being treated and capable of withstanding the action of that resist and spraying or other treatment which may be necessary to develop background staining. Suitable dyes are, for example, vat dyes or other dyes directly applicable to the ester and cellulose ether materials by means of aqueous suspensions or dispersions.
The following will give some examples which will illustrate the production of design effects on background colors produced by the oxidation of mixtures of aniline and para-amino-diphenylamine on acetic-based materials. cellulose tate.
