 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

  Inking mechanism for machines. to print.

   This invention consists of an inking mechanism for printing machines, of the type comprising an inkwell or ink reservoir, a supply plate, a take-up roller co-operating with this plate, a transport roller and a device for rotating the printer. take-up roller intermittently.

   The present mechanism is characterized mainly by the application of a reciprocating member, a series of supports moving with it, a pallet mounted on each of said supports and arranged to pivot freely by compared to it, the lower edge of each pallet coming flush with the feed plate and its free edge coming flush with the pick-up roller, and a device limiting the angular movement of each pallet ,,

 retained with the help of sensitive documents on papers used for securities and other documents used in commerce.

   Due to the chemicals used to make these inks sensitive, the viscosity of these inks is greater than that of other printing enores, so that during the continuous running of a press one does not consistently achieve continuity. perfect that should exist in the supply and application of the ink on the take-up roller, to ensure a suitable and uninterrupted transport of the ink, this defect not being able to be corrected by the adjustment of the plate power supply.

   As the presses to which the inkwell according to the invention is intended to be applied are high speed presses, it is practically impossible to leave it to the worker to brew and apply. spread the ink using a hand spatula to maintain the correct and uninterrupted application of the ink on the take-up roller at all times.

   It has already been proposed to use various types of automatic ink agitators to continuously stir the ink inside the inkwells, but these devices have not been satisfactory in the case of still sensitive.

   The inking mechanism according to the invention is principally established with a view to its applioation to a high speed offset planographic printing machine for printing in several colors, which machine comprises a series of plate cylinders and a series of inkwells for each cylinder. The application of the present mechanism is extremely advantageous, since, during a period of operation of the press, the inkwells require virtually no attention on the part of the worker; just visit them occa-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 optionally and refill them with ink when needed.

  By virtue of the present mechanism, the amount of ink required in the inkwell is small in comparison with that required by previous inkwells, since almost all of the volume of the ink is constantly discharged to the ink. take-up roll and brought into a suitable position relative to this roll.

   In addition, this constant movement of the ink towards the pick-up roller allows the feed plate to be flush against the latter and limits the amount of ink supplied to the pick-up roller to a thin layer, resulting in ) a significant saving of ink, not only because of the limited quantity of ink taken by the take-up roller in the inkwell, but also because one avoids the loss of ink due to the filling of the inkwell with a quantity of ink greater than that actually required for a period of press operation.

   It is desirable to construct the inking mechanism such that the ink is applied as a wide web waiting in the longitudinal direction of the take-up roll while that roll is at rest and also while it is rotating. . With each of their small angular movement, the various vanes push back substantially all the ink contained in the inkwell towards the take-up roller and efficiently fill the space between the roller and the supply plate with it at the same time. that they apply the ink to a large surface of the roller, above this plate.

   As a result of the movement of the member driven by a reciprocating movement, the pivoting blades are automatically brought into a suitable oblique position, the angle of which is such that the pallet effectively delivers the ink towards the take-up roller, this movement of swivels-

 ment resulting in part from the movement of the organ to. reciprocating movement and in part of the resistance of the ink to the movement of the pallets. Stops, acting on the pallets, stop the movement of the latter when they have been brought to the correct angular position. corn.

   a series of paddles are provided such that a slight movement of the reciprocating member is sufficient to operate all the paddles simultaneously so that they discharge all the ink contained by the enorier and bring it in contact with the take-up roll over the entire length of this roll, which ensures the application of ink to all parts of the roll.

   The pallets are constructed and supported, relative to the reciprocating member, so as to allow their number and spacing to be changed, while allowing the worker to have free access to the different parts of the pallet. press, near the inkwell.

   Concentrically to the roohet wheel 13, there is an angled lever 17 carrying a pawl 18. One of the arms of the lever 17 is connected, by a rod 19, to an elbow lever 20 receiving its command, by means of a rod 22, of a crank plate 21, fixed on the shaft of the distributor roller 160 In guides 23 fixed to the inkwell 10, a rod or other sliding member 24 moves, receiving its reciprocating movement from a lever elbow 25 mounted on a support 26. The member or rod 24 is connected, by a rod 27, to one of the arms of the lever 25, the other arm /: This ebant lever connected, by a rod 28, to one of the lever arms 20.

   This member 24 carries a series of supports on each of which a pallet is mounted, in such a way that it can pivot freely with respect to its support, for the understanding of the invention, it will suffice to describe one of the pallets. and its support.

   Each support forms an arm 29 being mounted on the part 24 by means of a bracket 30, which is fixed to said organ by a locking screw 31. To the arm 29 is fixed, by a tightening nut 32, a plate 33 whose lower edge is reotilinear and parallel to the feed plate 11.

   On the plate 33 is articulated, by means of a hinge 34, a trapezoidal pallet 35, preferably of sheet metal. The lower edge of this pallet is flush with the feed plate 11 and its free vertical edge is flush with the take-up roller 12, tangentially to the periphery of the latter.

   The above construction does not have any parts protruding significantly above the end.

 shout 10 and leave the field free for the worker to work on the printing surface.

   To adjust the suitable angular position of the pallet 35 with respect to the plate 33 and allow the pallet to rotate freely, a part 36 is provided mounted on the axis of the hinge 34, and engaging with the pallet 35 by means of divergent arms 37 and 38 forming stops and capable of coming into closed contact with two respective faces of the plate 33.

   The operation of the mechanism which has just been defined is in principle as follows:
When the parts occupy the positions shown in Figures 1 to 3, the take-up roller 12 is at rest and the transport roller 14 is spaced from this roller and in contact with the distributor roller 16.

   As the crank plate 21 rotates, the elbow lever 20 swings and oscillates the lever 17, which causes the pawl 18 to move to the left in figure 1, sliding it over the toothing of the wheel to the left. roohet 13. during this movement of the bent lever 20, the bent lever 25 receives an oscillating movement of the rod 28 and, by means of the rod 27, moves the rod 24 to the right, the supports 29 and the plates 33 being trained in this displacement. during the initial movement of the plates 33, the paddles 35 do not in principle effect any movement due to the resistance offered by the ink, but rotate around the hinge 34 until such time as.

   one of the arms 37 comes to the cantact of one of the faces of the plate 33. From this moment, the pallets, which occupy an inclined position, move with the part 24, which has the effect of to push back the ink located at the front of each pallet towards the take-up roller 12. While the pallets are stationary, immediately after the change of direction of movement of the reciprocating member, which ensures the angular movement of the pallets and changes their inclination; the fact that the ink has been contralto to pass between the roller 1a and the plate 11 during the previous movement of the pallets and that ink is introduced into this space during the rotation of the roller ensures the presence, on the take-up roller, a layer of ink whose thickness is determined by the adjustment of the feed plate.

   The reciprocating movement of the paddles in either direction applies the ink to the roll in the manner previously described.

   The agitation of the ink by the paddles is not the object of this invention, the more so as this agitation is not only useless, in the case of sensitive enorea of the kind of which it is contemplated the application. - tion, but is, in a way, undesirable, a series of paddles are provided to allow the discharge of all the ink contained in the inkwell towards the roller, as described, by a relatively small movement of the member 24, each pallet acting only on a part of the contents of the inkwell, it is not necessary to adjust with great precision the position of the pallets, although it is desirable that their spacing be such as the range. action of each of them partially overlaps with that of adjacent pallets,

   the various paddles preferably being spaced apart a distance less than the amplitude of movement of the member 24.

   By the non-application of the yoke supports 29, it is not only possible to adjust the position of any paddle mechanism, considered as a whole, longitudinally with respect to the inkwell, but also to remove this mechanism from it. , which allows cleaning.

   er the inkwell and the paddle mechanism and to limit the action of the paddles to any desired part of the take-up roll, determined by partitions provided in the inkwell, especially when inks of different colors are supplied to the same inkwell , to avoid the need to carry out the repositioning of the vane mechanisms relative to the member 24, the plate 33 can be detached from its support 29, and this support itself can be left on the member. 24 when removing the part of the vane mechanism which needs cleaning.,
In the operation of planographic printing presses it is frequently necessary for the worker to remove fibrils or fluff from the paper,

   as well as other foreign substances deposited on the printing surface. The subtraction of said inking mechanism makes it possible to have easy access to this surface with a view to this operation. It has been found that the enoreur mechanism according to the invention makes it possible to achieve, in practice, very large savings in the expense of high quality sensitive inks employed in a machine, the main object of this invention being to achieve these savings by avoiding the unnecessary waste of ink which occurs when loading inkwells from a machine. higher ink quantity. re to that necessary for a period of operation of the press.

   Due to their exposure to air, these inks deteriorate, so that if the amount of encore put into the inkwell is too large, the unused part is wasted.

   The embodiment shown in the extremely appended drawings has given satisfactory results in practice, but the details of construction can be changed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
