<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

IMPROVEMENTS TO MACHINES FOR MANUFACTURING BULBS FOR ELECTRIC LAMPS and SIMILAR ARTICLES
The present invention relates to improvements to machines for the manufacture of bulbs for electric lamps or similar articles comprising a sealed envelope, and more particularly to machines for shaping the bulbs or envelopes, in the vicinity of their. sealing region, where they receive the pellets
The object of the invention is a mechanism which operates automatically and which can be added, for example, to a sealing machine intended, as is well known,
for sealing mounts in the bulbs of incandescent lamps and the like *
The invention comprises means so that the bulb knows how to place it preoise, when it is subjected to the mechanism of shaping or of

shoulder foundation, as well as safety devices to reduce breakage *
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, some preferred embodiments of the object of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine according to the invention combined with a sealing machine.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the upper lamp centering jaws.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lower centering and shoulder forming jaws, with their operating mechanism.
Figure 4 shows the lamp in the sealing machine, with the shoulder forming jaws operating in conjunction with it.
FIG. 5 represents an automatic safety disconnection device, with a plan view of the apparatus ensuring the electrical contact, and a partial schematic view of the other members.
Figure 6 shows in elevation the control mechanism of one of the contacts of the disconnection device.
Figure 7 shows, in side elevation, the disconnection key and the members cooperating with it.
Figure 8 shows in perspective a lever and the attached members serving as an additional safety device.
The machine according to the invention is shown with a complete installation for sealing the feet of the incandescent lamps on the bulbs and it constitutes one of its components. The sealing machine has a number of heads mounted on a holder facing to the right. In each head, a lamp rests freely in an individual holder 25 (Fig.l & 4).
The shoulder forming machine intervenes first to place the lamp in plaoa binds precisely and then to form the shoulder.
The vertical position of the lamp is ensured by a ring 24 which clamps the lamp in the individual bulb holder 25, during the operation of forming the shoulder. Its horizontal position is ensured by a pair of jaws. upper 32 and 33 and by a group of three lower jaws 42, 43 and'44 which are formed around the neck of the bulb.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
After the lamp was put in place, the three shoulder forming jaws 45, 46 and 47 closing around the sealing region of the ampoule neck which was in a half molten state and they thus form the shoulder. The lamp then has a shoulder similar to that shown in Figure 4.
The machine is operated (see Figure 1) by a lever 10, which is itself moved by a cam placed on the main camshaft of the seelling machine, and which is tilted in an oscillatory movement, so as to print a reciprocating movement to the slide 16. When the slide 16 reaches its previous position, determined by the impact of its extension bracket 15 against an adjustable stop pin 17 (Figure 8) which is mounted on the fixed frame 18. the springs 12 allow the bar 11, which is provided with a mortise for the axis 13, and the lever 10, to complete their movement.
The main slide 16 carries an auxiliary slide 19 which moves with it, until a lug 20 carried by this element strikes against a stop 21. A block 22, fixed on the auxiliary slide 19, is pulled by springs 23, which tend to apply it against the main slide 16. The amplitude of the movement of the different jaws depends on the difference in the movements of the slides 16 and 19.
The ampoule centering ring 24 (Figures 1 and 4) exerts a small pressure on the upper part of the ampoule which has the effect of maintaining it in a fixed position in the individual holder 25 during the entire forming operation. of the shoulder. After stopping the auxiliary slide 19, the movement of the slide 16 carrying the cam 26 raises the roller 27 which acts indirectly to move the arm 28. This arm lowers an element 29 and at the same time the ferrule 30 thus giving the spring 31 sufficient voltage to hold the bulb in its proper position.
The horizontal position of the bulb is ensured by the upper centering jaws 32 and 33 (Figs. 1, 2 and 4). These jaws (Fig. 1 and 2) are actuated when the lever 34 turns on the arm. 35 fixed on the then fixed auxiliary slide 19, is pushed towards the pitch by the cam 36.
The lever 34 (Fig.2) acts on the arm 37 and, consequently, on the bar 38 by means of the springs 39; the forward movement of the bar 38 acting through this articulated lever mechanism, forms the *
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
jaws. The movement of the member 38, and therefore the position of the jaws, 'is regulated by the impact of the part 38 against the adjusting screw 40 (see Figure 1) carried by the auxiliary slide 19.
The lower jaws 42, 43 and 44 serving for centering, are established in three sections and carry the jaws 45, 46 and 47 to form the shoulder provided with converging overlapping stops (figure 9) to prevent formation, in the glass, wrinkles or grooves which could be produced if jaws with straight edges were used. These jaws (Fig. 3) are clamped together by the forward movement of slider 16.
A jaw is mounted directly on this slide, and the other jaws are mounted on arms 48 and 49. These arms rotate at 50 and
51 on the auxiliary slide 19, and They are tilted at one end by the cams 52 and 53. The springs 54 and 55, fixed to the arms 48 and 49 and to the auxiliary slide 19, pull on the jaws to separate them when the slide 16 backs down *
In Figure 1, a head of the sealing machine with the lamp which it supports, are shown in the position of conformation of the shoulder, after they have passed through the sealing lights, not shown, which leave the neck of the ampoule, in the region of the seal, in a pasty state :.
During the sealing operation the individual lamp holder is rotated by a belt 56 passing over the pulley 57, so as to provide uniform heating of the sealing region.
It is important; that the head is correctly in place for the operation of shaping the shoulder, because it comprises parts which, otherwise, could interfere with the organs of the shaping machine of the shoulder, when approaching and close around the lamp.
Means are provided to stop the rotating head in a determined position and to render the shaping members of the shoulder inoperative, until the head occupies an appropriate position. The stop mechanism, as well as the mechanism for suspending the operation of the machine for the shoulder, are shown in figure 5.
A roller 58, carried by the pulley 57, acts on the lever 59, when the head is in a suitable position for the shoulder shaping operation, and stops the rotation of the head, while the belt 56 slides on the pulley 57.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the head is in place? its rotation continues until the roller 68 acts on the lever 59. At the same time, as explained later, the mechanism for closing the device for making the shoulders and the other jaws ceases to function ,,
A spring 60, fixed to the lever 59, allows the roller 58 to pass, when the head is directed to the right, after the operation of shaping the shoulder is completed. A lever 61 pivotally mounted on the lever 59 serves as a ratchet to prevent the roller 58 from slipping backward through the shoulder shaping operatoon.
When the head occupies the correct position, which is indicated by the roller 58, the lever 62, which carries a contact 64, is tilted into a position where another contact 65 cannot touch it. mounted on a lever 66 through which it can be raised or lowered depending on the position of the main control lever 10.
In the mechanism shown in Figure 6, the lever 66 is connected to the main lever 10 by a rod 67 and a slide bar 68. The slide is provided in the bar 68 so that for the full delay position of the main lever 10, l 'lug 69 pulls on the bar 68 which indirectly pulls the contact 65 up and outside the plane of the contact 64.
The spring 70 pulls the lever 66 downwards, in all the other positions of the main lever 10. Under these conditions, if the roller 58, and therefore the sealing head, do not occupy the correct position, the contact 65 falls on contact 64, which closed the circuit and energizes the solenoid.
The solenoid 71, acting through the intermediary of parts 72 to 76, pulls the key or key 77 out of the housing provided for it in the bar 14, thus allowing the latter to slide freely in the console 15, The frame 72 is pulled upward by adenoid 71 thereby forcing rod 73 to rotate shaft 74 by means of lever 75.
The lever 76 (Fig.7), which is keyed on the shaft 74, pulls the key 77 out of its housing in the bar 14. This action has the effect of unlocking the control arm 10 of the machine, leaving this arm full freedom of movement, without operation of the machine.
The key 77 is returned to its operative position when the adenoid is not actuated
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by the combined effect of the spring 78 and the weight of the movable frame 72,
Another safety device is shown appearing.If for some reason closing of the shaping jaws is not desired, an arm 79 is raised and thus stops the console 15, before it has reached its extreme position towards front, determined by stopper 17.
It is understood that the arrangements and the applications which have been indicated above, by way of example, are in no way limiting, and that one can deviate from this without departing from the scope of the invention. .
