  SYSTEME DE REPRODUCTI ON DES FILMS MU3TS OU S0inùÀs . -

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

  MU3TS OR S0inùÀs FILMS REPRODUCTI ON SYSTEM. -
The invention relates to the reproduction of cinematographic images or sounds, or both at the same time, with the aid of recordings made in advance, each complete recording comprising several separate parts to be played successively during the reproduction. For the projection of fairly long cinematographic images comprising several rolls of film, two identical projectors are commonly used with the aid of which the rolls are successively projected, without interruption.

   Various means have been used to enable the operator to turn on the projectors at the desired time and to transfer the reproduction from one to the other, giving a certain coverage to the separated films. that is to say by ensuring that the end of the first is repeated at the beginning of the second. To simplify your

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 transfer, one often makes the passage from one machine to another during the projection of a subtitle, so that the irregularities which would occur in the exact synchronism are not apparent.

   If we do not appeal to these devices, we must maintain the synohronieme exsot laying the transference. It is an obligation which is relative in the case of cinematographic films, but is absolute in the case of talking films or cinematographic films recorded by means of discs.

   The invention relates to improved methods and apparatus having the qualities required to effect the transfer while maintaining exact synchronism *
The novel features and advantages of the invention will be better understood by reference to the following description and the accompanying drawings, given simply by way of example and without any limitation, and in which
Figure 1 shows two projectors constructed according to the invention, so as to operate one after the other.

   Figure 2 is a detail view of the motor drive of each projector.

   Figure 3 is a section of a film for use in accordance with the invention.

   Figures 4 & 5 are two successive rolls of films on which parts of the same image and sound recording are reproduced, and which contain a recording device for synchronization.
Figure 6 shows part of the same film, with synchronized sound reproducing devices *
Figure 1 shows an installation for film projection and sound reproduction using a film carrying both images and sounds.

   This installation comprises similar devices 1 and 2, each represented as comprising a box 4 containing the projection and reproduction mechanism, the lantern 5, etc .... Above and below the box 4 are attached the boxes. ordinary magazine 6 containing the rolls of film and sound recordings.

   In the upper part of the box 4 is the image projection apparatus, which may be of any known construction, and in the lower part is the reproducing apparatus.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 sound actor, which can also belong to any known type of device
Of course, instead of using sound recording films, it is possible to ensure musical reproduction by discs and equip apparatus 1 and 2 as described in patent No. 366,397 of April 30, 1930 of the
Plaintiff company.

   In each unit, the film is driven by a motor at constant speed, preferably synchronous, shown at 7, which is supported by a console integral with the box 4 and connected to the film driving mechanism inside the box 4, at the bottom. means of a differential gear contained in the box 8. These differential devices, shown on a larger scale in Figure 2, allow the operator to vary the angular relationship of the shaft 10 which drives the driving mechanism. film and motor shaft
11, and can offer any known construction feature.

   In the example considered, it has been shown as comprising the angle gears 12 and
13 respectively mounted on the shafts 10 and 11 and meshing with two planetary gears 14 and 15 carried by the annular wheel 16. The latter is a helical wheel meshing with the worm 17 to which the handle 18 is connected. two elements are represented as connected to a common supply circuit 20, through the control switches 20 and 21. As already indicated, the two elements 1 and 2 must operate in turn and in such a way that the representation can be continuous .

   The film may carry a recording of silent images, or a motion picture recording associated with a sound recording, or the silent film may be accompanied by a phonographic reproduction. In all cases, the recording on the last parts of the film of a strip must, for a certain length which can be 25 feet, be repeated on the first part of the film of the following roll * This repetition is obtained by switching on , as the case may be, either simply the second cinematographic device, or both the second cinematographic device and the second sound recorder before stopping, or of the first cinematographic recorder, or of the first mixed recorder,

   there is therefore a time interval during which the two devices operate simultaneously. The same result can still be obtained by using a single negative, and by making the printing operation easier twice.

  In the vicinity or at the exact point where the repetition of band 1 begins, we

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 practice on the two films, in a suitable place of these not occupied, for example between one of the edges of the row of driving holes, a sound recording of variable frequency linearly for example of a musical note of which the height increases or decreases in a regular way. In Fig.

  3, there is shown a small section of a positive film 25 showing the recording of images and sounds and including the repeated portion of the regular sound recording 26 which accompanies the images, and at the opposite edge of the film. recording 27 of the regularly variable note. This note can be recorded on the negative, or separately on the positives using reference marks occupying the desired positions.

   In Figure 4 there is shown the upper and lower rolls 28 which during reproduction occupy the chambers 6 of the apparatus with the film almost entirely unwound from the upper roll onto the lower roll and it has been shown the part of the film which bears the auxiliary recording corresponding to the repeated part of the film. Similarly, in Figure 5, there is shown the lower and upper rollers 29, which, during reproduction, occupy the chambers 6 of the apparatus 2, the film carrying the repeated part of the sound recording 26 '. and the auxiliary recording 27 ', but with this difference that the film has just started to unwind from the upper reel, to wind on the lower reel.

   In Fig. 6, in each of the units 1 and 2, means are provided for transforming the auxiliary recording into corresponding current pulses which, suitably amplified, are translated into sounds, by means of a telephone or a telephone. a speaker. A lamp 32 serves as an example light source, and optical means 33 concentrate the light beams on the respective recordings 27 and 27 ', and behind each film is placed a photocell 34 in a desired position to receive the rays. having gone through sound recording.

   Each of the photoelectric cells 34 is connected to an appropriate circuit going to the amplifier 35 from which the respective circuits go to the telephone or the loudspeaker 37.

   When a film of the type described comprising several rolls is projected and using the apparatus of the invention, the operator first projects the first roll (unit 11, and while it is unwinding, prepares unit 2 , so that he is ready to switch it on. When the first roll is nearly used up, the operator receives a signal warning him to start / *

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 turn on the second unit, by closing switch 22, to turn on the projection lamps, etc .; The signal is preferably preceded by a warning which can be recorded on the margin of the film, as indicated in
27, and the operator can receive it through a helmet or the loudspeaker 36 placed in the cabin.

   After a short time interval following the start signal, and sufficient for unit 2 to reach full speed, the operator begins to hear the note corresponding to the recording 27-27 'of each of the units. If he hears through headphones, one of the receivers can be connected to the output of cell 34 of the unit, while the other receiver is connected to photocell 34 of the other unit: in which case both operator's ears hear the respective signals corresponding to the operation of the two projectors. If the operator is simply using a loudspeaker such as 36, the two sounds will overlap.

   The speeds of the two units are necessarily the marls; and as long as the soft units are not in exact synchronism (i.e. the same image and the sounds are not reproduced at the same instant by the two units), the two sounds heard by the operator, do not have the dismal height; and if the difference is not too great the operator perceives a beat note * After this listening, the operator, recognizing that film 2, for example, is slightly ahead or slightly behind the film 1, only has to turn the handle 18 of the differential of unit 2 in the direction required to correct the advance or the delay indicated by the beat note.

   When the operator realizes that the exact synchronism * has been obtained, 11 stops the device 1 to let the device 2 operate. The projector 1, being at rest, he can mount on this projector the third band whose start-up and pre-injection will be done by repeating on projector 1 the maneuvers previously performed on projector 2.

   Although the application of the invention to a film comprising images and sounds has been shown and described by way of example, it should be recognized that it is not limited to this application. and that any other time of recording is susceptible to the same solutions of the problem of synchre ni cation,
