Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Au moins l'un desdeux composants, et notamment celuqui est le moins volatil, sera un non dissolvant pour le produit à filer et exercera au cours de l'évaporation un effet de coagulation activant la soli- dification; l'agent dissolvant très volatil peut aussi bien être par lui-même un dissolvant poux le dérivé de cellulose à filer, de dans le cas de l'acétate cellulsoe par exemple l'acétate de méthyle ou pareillement un non dissolvant, qui, en combinaison avec le deuxième agent par dissolution, forme un mélange   dissol-   vant facile, lors du filage de la nitrocellulose, par exemple ;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 ébullition élevé et des agents additionnels à point d'ébullition élevé qui sont éventuellement présents;

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

     A titre d'exemple, lors de l'emploi d'un mélange de dichlor- éthylène et d'alcool comme dissolvant, on peut utiliser comme agent d'absorption, un mélange de crésol et de téraline. lequel,

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 process for manufacturing artificial threads using the dry spinning process.

    @ When spinning solutions of cellulose derivatives, for example cellulose acetate, in volatile solvents, according to the dry spinning process, yarns are generally obtained with a flattened section, not very articulated, of lamellar or bone shape. It was immediately recognized that such a shape of section brings great disadvantages from a textile point of view.

   Fabrics made from these yarns exhibit, particularly for dark shades, a perfectly unstable, "scintillating" appearance. And likewise from a mechanical point of view these

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Fabrics are less resistant, particularly to rubbing, than fabrics made of a similar raw material having a full and compact fiber section. subsequently, a series of procedures were known which aim to remedy this drawback and to influence the section in the desired direction.

   Of these respective proposals we can cite the following, by way of example:
Use of high concentration spinning solutions with, for example, above 20 and even, in certain circumstances, above 25 percentages by weight of cellulose acetate.

   2) Use of a charged spinning atmosphere

 less perfect, which show the detrizent called "sparkle" only to a subordinate degree, especially for reduced singular titer of fibers.

   In fig. 1 it has been illustrated typical section shapes as can be obtained by the aforementioned means. From the point of view of the operator working the artificial silk, these sections cannot however be yet considered as an ideal, independently of a "shimmering" which one can however still recognize among others, these threads, by their coarse lobing, have only a relatively weak covering power and, by their high polish, they have a tendency to move in the tissues.

   It was therefore necessary to seek, in order to achieve an even more perfect shape, a rounded or oval box on the edges of the section having a stronger articulation (serration) but not more rossier. somewhat in the form as shown in fig. 2.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The subject of the present patent application is a new spinning process which makes it possible to obtain a shape of section hitherto unknown in dry-spun silk, and this under conditions which make work of good performance possible. in continuous operation. Here, solutions of the spinning material are used in mixtures of solvents known per se, which consist of two main components having different volatility and into which it is possible to introduce, in smaller quantities, dissolving, swelling or blowing agents. softening, higher boiling or substantially non-volatile, or any other additional agent.

   At least one of the two components, and in particular that which is the least volatile, will be a non-dissolving product for the product to be spun and will exert during evaporation a coagulation effect which activates solidification; the highly volatile dissolving agent may as well be by itself a dissolver for the spinning cellulose derivative, in the case of cellulose acetate for example methyl acetate or similarly a non-dissolving agent, which in combination with the second agent on dissolution, forms an easy dissolving mixture, when spinning nitrocellulose, for example;

   ether - alcohol, Other mixtures of this kind, especially for cellulose acetates, are for example methylene chloride - = alcohol, methyl formate - methanol, chlorethylene - alcohol.

   In accordance with the invention, the yarns obtained by spinning such solutions and advantageously in the hot state, are heavily sprayed with water. immediately after they have left the die, by a gaseous atmosphere freed from solvent vapors, or liberated as much as possible from mixtures of solvent vapors particularly from the main component at the point of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 high boiling and additional high boiling agents which may be present;

   when making a correct choice of the spinning conditions (quantity and temperature of the drying gas stream, temperature of the spinning solution, etc.) there is thus a sufficiently rapid coagulation with formation of the desired section .. the bubbling gas mixture around the wires, in the simplest case atmospheric air, can be. introduced into the cell at the location of the die, without any special preheating. However, it can also be specially and advantageously reheated to a temperature appropriate to the vapor pressure of the solvents employed.

   In order to increase as much as possible the favorable action of the drying gases on the formation of the threads, it is advantageous to work in such a way that the gas stream arrives under the effect of suitable devices according to a directed stream from the wire 'outside. This best possible use of the drying agent for the removal of solvent vapors makes it possible to reduce the concentration of the spinning solution, in such a way that one can obtain without sacrificing the cross-section. predetermined, the wires. finest single pieces from 2 to 3 den. and less, without even when spinning coarser yarns with a corresponding greater number of single yarns, excess amounts of drying gas are required.

   This is important on the one hand, given that for the large quantities of air and the loads reduced in accordance with solvent vapors a simple and industrial recovery is called into question, and on the other hand, since when manufacturing yarns with a higher overall count, quantities of air were required which could have an influence on the safety of the spinning.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

   The drying gas introduced at the location of the dies, in accordance with the natural tension of the solvent vapors which cool and which are specifically heavy, is discharged at best in the same direction as the downward flow of the threads, and it can be discharged either at the lower end of the column or at any other area of the spinning cell.

  The new process is particularly important and of great value when working in a known manner with a circulatory drying gas stream from which the solvent vapors are continuously subtracted for the purpose of recovery and condensation. care should be taken so that the content of solvents in the gas introduced at the location of the dies is kept relatively low. First of all, it is necessary that the main component with a high boiling point is removed as far as possible, otherwise the evaporation of this dissolving agent from the threads and therefore the final coagulation of the latter would be greatly delayed.

   Otherwise the yarns have the opportunity to adopt a less perfect shape and with coarser articulations and, in certain circumstances, also to take the particularly disadvantageous laminate shape.

   The content of dissolving agents, especially the content of high-boiling components, thus operates against the influence of the drying gas mixture. As a result, we have in our hands, to a certain degree, the possibility of balancing the delay of coagulation as a result of the remaining load, such as is inevitable in the work in cycle specifically with recovery = ration by condensation, by more intensive watering of the fila with the drying gas.,
The content of the component or components with a higher boiling point in the introduced drying gas mixture depends only on the choice of the refrigeration temperature, when it

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   these are simple condensation processes.

   Any decrease in this temperature is not possible for industrial reasons, since the consumption of cold and because of the ± line of a cold calorie increase rapidly for a falling temperature. It is also particularly advantageous in the condensation process, to put the digging agent in contact with the strands as well as possible. This can be done in a very simple manner, for example, by blowing the gas from a suitable location provided at the die orifices, in a horizontal direction, onto the spinning threads.

   A further more extensive, possibly more practical, complete removal of solvent vapors can take place by means of a per se known absorption or adsorption process.

   In order to be able to work with a view to improving and reducing costs in the recovery, with the highest possible load and a passage through the absorption devices reduced in accordance, without renouncing for freezing the management The improved absorption or adsorption apparatus, in accordance with the invention, is selected such that selective removal of solvent vapors occurs in the drying gas stream so that the component The higher boiling point or components thereof are advantageously removed, possibly substantially completely, while a greater or lesser part of the low boiling point main solvent remains in the gas stream.

     For example, when using a mixture of dichlorethylene and alcohol as a solvent, a mixture of cresol and tereraline can be used as the absorption agent. which,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 Lice an appropriate selection ratio, completely removes the alcohol, while removing only a part of the dichlorethylene.

  In mixtures of this kind it is also possible to advantageously combine condensation and selective absorption, for example of sulfuric acid, cresol, etc. This results in a truly reduced refrigeration temperature in the condenser.

   In general, the absorption process is to be preferred over the adsorption process, since it is more successful in maintaining a constant composition of the gas mixtures discharged.

   Example.- 17 parts by weight of a cellulose acetate with an acetic acid content of about 54 days, 1 and a relative viscosity determined by the method is in an acetone solution with a viscosity of about 9, are dissolved in 83 parts by weight of a mixture of methylene chloride - = alcohol, in a proportion of 7:

  3. This solution is spun through a die with 20 0.07 mm perforations. in diameter in a cylindrical spinning cell of ordinary dimensions "The temperature of the solution before it leaves the spinning die is about 48, the temperature in the spinning cell is kept at the height of the die at about 30, and at the bottom, by additional heating, to about 50; The supply of the solution to the die is regulated in such a way that for a flow rate of 225 m / M. overall titration of 50 den.

   Immediately after leaving the die, a drying atmosphere is brought to the spinning thread which circulates in a closed cycle and directed in the same direction as the passage of the threads, with a speed of 3.5 mcb / h. , this atmosphere being provided by suitably arranged annular nozzles; from this circulatory atmosphere one withdraws, before its re-entry into the. cells, up to 220 gr. methylene chloride and

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 6 gr. Of alcohol per mob. of air. We thus obtain a. Wire of rounded section and strongly articulated, in accordance with the shape illustrated in fig.2, having a strength of about 1.5 gr / den. for an elongation at break of about 28%.

   (The viscosity data refers to a viscometer according to OBtwald with a flow time of 20 seconds per 25 cm of pure acetone at 20)
R e v e n d ic a t ions. l.- Accessed for dry spinning of artificial silk with fine threads of perfect section with fine lobes, characterized by the fact that a spinning solution previously reheated and consisting of a cellulosic derivative and a mixture of solvents consisting of two main components, of which at least the one with a higher boiling point does not dissolve the cellulose derivative under consideration in itself,

   the spinning being carried out so that a gaseous evaporating agent arrives in a. current directed to the outgoing wires shortly after the latter leave the die.
