tDE114ARREÛR ELECTRIQUE A PIGNON COULISSANT .AXIALEMENT".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

tDE114 .AXIALLY "SLIDING PINION ELECTRICAL STOP.
The present invention relates to a starter whose pinion is moved axially by a shaft passing right through the rotor of the starter, the rotor of which is coupled to the pinion shaft by means of a blade coupling. and a freewheel and the pinion of which is engaged by a displacement device which is operated by the driver such that the main starter switch is closed after full engagement of the pinion. In known starters of this type, the pinion shafts of which pass entirely through the rotor, rapid threading is provided and the engagement of the pinion is effected by the inertia of the shaft and the pinion.
But the special devices of these starters which are necessary to make it possible to engage the pinion in the ring gear if the teeth of the pinion come into contact with the teeth of the ring gear, are very complicated. The displacement devices of the other starters whose pinion shafts do not pass right through the rotor and whose pinions are moved on the rotor shaft, are arranged on the same side as the pinion. Such a mode of construction- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
However, this does not allow a suitable construction from the point of view of mounting these starters in the frame of the flywheel, not to mention the disadvantage that these starters can only be used for one direction of rotation.
According to the invention these drawbacks are avoided by this means that a threaded nut with rapid pitch which can be displaced axially by a device is arranged opposite the pinion relative to the rotor that a slight rotary movement is imparted to it. the pinion shaft and the pinion to make it possible to engage the pinion if the teeth of the pinion come into contact with them. teeth 'of the ring gear and that, after full engagement of the pinion, the high-speed threaded nut which is coupled to the starter main switch via a leaf coupling is decoupled and at the same time the switch for starting the starter is closed. In the accompanying drawing is shown an exemplary embodiment of the invention. 1 denotes the pinion shaft and 2 the pinion itself.
The pinion shaft is coupled to the rotor 20 by means of a freewheel 21 and a leaf coupling 22, disposed on the same side as the pinion. On the side facing the pinion with respect to the rotor are the device capable of rotating the pinion shaft as well as the device for moving the latter. These devices are made up of the following members: on the end of the pinion shaft 1 is securely fixed a sleeve carrying a fast-pitch thread on the outside; this fast-pitch thread 2 can be screwed on a threaded nut 4 carrying a flange disposed between the two friction discs 6 and 1 which are pressed against said flange by the springs 25 and 26 Between the disc 7 and the flange is a neck- lock to stop 8.
The pawl 9 is hinged to one of these two friction discs so that it can turn fully perpendicular to the friction disc. 10 designates a bolt screwed into the starter housing. The shoulder 11 of this bolt as well as the nuts 12 are used for the pawl '2.
The flange, and consequently the threaded sleeve 4 with rapid pitch, are coupled to the contact bracket of the switch by the bolts 14. The contact bracket 13 has two contact pieces 15 which come to rest on the switch. the two contact terminals 16 by closing the switch; in the drawing is shown only a contact part and a contact terminal. The contact yoke 13 receives a sliding movement by the lever 17 and moves the pinion shaft 1 by means of a bolt 18 which is under the influence of the spring 19.
To start the starter lever 17
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is maneuvered; this axially moves the contact bracket
13, and the latter from its part through the bolt 18, the pinion shaft and the pinion, as well as through the bolts 14, and for the same distance, the threaded nut 4 If the pinion can engage in the ring gear without impact, there is no movement of the threaded nut 4 relative to the threaded sleeve 3. As soon as the pinion has engaged in the ring gear, the pawl abuts against shoulder 11 and it is turned into the position shown in figure 2.
The friction discs are disengaged and the flange of the nut
4 can rotate freely between friction discs 6 and 7.
Almost at the same time the contact bracket 13 comes to rest on the contact terminals 16 and the starter is set in rotation. As soon as the internal combustion engine is started and the pinion shaft moves axially in the opposite direction under the influence of the springs 23 the friction discs remain open since the pawl 9 keeps the position shown in figure 2 until the pawl arm abuts against nut 12; a- then the pawl returns to the position shown in figure 1. The flange 5¯ of the nut 4. is tightened again by the two friction discs 7 and 8, and the pinion shaft and all the electric motor are braked quickly.
The eyes 12 are adjusted so that the pawl returns to the position of the figure after the pinion has completely disengaged from the ring gear. If the teeth of the pinion come into contact with the teeth of the ring gear, the threaded nut 4 is displaced axially and cannot be turned because it is clamped between the friction discs 6, and 7. A a slight rotary movement is imparted to the threaded sleeve 3. the pinion shaft and pinion until the teeth of the pinion come in front of the voids of the ring gear; then the operations for engaging the pinion are repeated as described above.
The device described for the starter motor allows very favorable mounting and a considerable reduction in the wear of the pinion and of the ring gear; furthermore, this device can be applied for a direction of rotation to the left or to the right; to change it from one direction of rotation to the other, it suffices to turn the outer bearing race by 1800 around its axis of radial symmetry.
