Au dessin annexé, donna à titre d'exemple, plusieurs for-, mes d'exécution du dispositif en question ont été représentées et à ce dessint Fig. 1 montre en coupe longitudinale partielle tout le mécanisme si- tué entre l'embrayage principal et le dernier tronçon d'arbre; Fig. 2 est une coupe transversale partielle suivant la ligne II-II de la fig. 1; Fig. 3 montre schématiquement une autre forme d'exécution; Fige 4 et 5 représentent plutôt schématiquement une troisième forme d'exécution du dispositif dans deux positions différentes; Fig. 6 montre les organes de détails pour la manoeuvre de la roue libre dans leur position finale respective lors de son blocage;

Lorsque la roue libre est bloquée, c'est-à-dire que l'ar- bre 5b entraîne l'arbre 11, comme le montre la fig. 1; le déplace- ment de la pédale 8 dans la direction de la flâche provoque l'en- traînement de la pièce de guidage 19 dans la même direction par le fait que le bouton élastique 22 rencontre la buttée 20;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Device for blocking and releasing the freewheel inserted in the drive shaft line of a motor car.
The invention refers to motor cars in which they are inserted at the output of the gearbox, that is to say in the path of the shaft controlling the driving wheels, a freewheel device having the same function as freewheeling in a bicycle.
The advantage of the invention lies in the fact that the freewheeling device can not only be engaged and disengaged at will in the known manner, but that it can also be released desmodromically from the blocked position by the operation of a control member of the car (clutch pedal, gearshift lever, etc.). In addition, it can again be blocked, namely being brought into the position in which the motor drives the driving wheels, when one of the aforementioned control members is brought back or when one is released.
This is achievable by establishing a certain
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
connection between one of the car's control units, p. expl. the clutch pedal or the gearshift control lever and the freewheel so as to make maneuvering of the freewheel deemodromically possible, but without hampering any voluntary maneuvering thereof before or at the time of the operation of said control member (clutch pedal, gear change lever, etc.). The aforementioned connection can be made with the help of various devices, among other things also in a purely mechanical way by means of a rod.
It is also possible to connect it not to the freewheel operating lever, but also directly to a member of the latter.
The device, which is the subject of the present invention, is very advantageously adapted to the member for controlling the gear change. The latter can under these conditions be totally and momentarily disengaged from the clutch of the engine and from the drive shaft of the driving wheels; the gear change maneuver can therefore be carried out very easily.
In the accompanying drawing, given by way of example, several embodiments of the device in question have been shown and in this drawing FIG. 1 shows in partial longitudinal section the entire mechanism situated between the main clutch and the last section of the shaft; Fig. 2 is a partial cross section taken on the line II-II of FIG. 1; Fig. 3 schematically shows another embodiment; Figs 4 and 5 rather schematically show a third embodiment of the device in two different positions; Fig. 6 shows the detail members for the operation of the freewheel in their respective final position when it is locked;
Fig. 7 shows the details * when unlocking the freewheel;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 8 shows certain parts of details in the intermediate position which they reach when the clutch pedal is pushed back beyond its normal disengaged position in order to act on the freewheel *
In fig. 1 is shown the engine designated by 1, which follows the main clutch consisting of the crown 3, connected to the flywheel 2 and the movable clutch plate 4. The latter is guided on the grooved part 5 'of the main shaft Sa coming out of gear boot 6.
The mobile plate 4 is operated by means of; of the pedal 8 turning at 7 and the two side rollers of which engage in the groove of the collar 4 'fixed to the means of the plate 4.
The pedal 8 is connected to a spring 9 which always brings it back to the rest position in which the two plates 3 and 4 are engaged * To the shaft section 5b coming out of the boot 6 is connected a shaft 11 by. via a freewheel device. From the shaft 11, the drive wheels are controlled in the usual way.
The freewheel is formed on the one hand from a shoulder 10 of marble 5b lined with inclined wedging planes, an outer ring 12 and cylindrical wedging rollers 13. In order to allow blocking, namely the immobilization of the freewheel and consequently the driving of the wheels by the engine, there is added a claw clutch, one of the halves 14 of which is placed on the shaft 5b while the second part 15 is fitted inside part 12. This can be moved longitudinally on the shaft 11 without however being able to turn there so that by moving it to one side or the other the freewheel can be made operative or inoperative * The lever 17 pivoting on the axis 16 is used to operate this device.
The freewheel can be locked at will by moving the lever 17 in the direction of the arrow, that is to say that during this operation of said lever the clutch teeth 14 and 15 of the shafts Sb and 11 (ring 12) come into engagement with one another. Solving the invention the lever 17 is made dependent on some extent
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the clutch pedal 8, and this so that the freewheel is released periodically (shafts 5b-11 separated) as soon as the clutch pedal 8 is pushed back, which then disjoins the two plates 6.4.
The connection between the levers 17 and 8 is effected by means of the rod 18 and the guide piece 19 This has a guide surface 19 'shaped in a special way from which protrudes a finger 20. with inclined planes. The lever 8 is provided with a movable button 22, subjected to the action of a spring 21, the upper face of which conforms to the guide planes 19 'and 20. The rod supporting the part 19 is guided. in the support bearings 23,24.
The guide piece 19,19 ', 20 as well as the elastic bolt 22 combined with the clutch pedal make it possible to perform the following maneuvers,
When the freewheel is blocked, that is to say that the shaft 5b drives the shaft 11, as shown in fig. 1; the movement of the pedal 8 in the direction of the jib causes the guide piece 19 to be dragged in the same direction by the fact that the elastic button 22 meets the stop 20;
Lever 17 therefore takes the position shown in phantom. during part of its travel, the freewheel is released * When part 18 of the freewheel reaches its extreme retraction position, the guide piece 19 is stopped and the pedal 8 pushed by the foot continues despite this its way towards its extreme position, shown in dotted lines, because the elastic button 22 disappears while passing in front of the projection 20. When the pedal 8 is released, it returns to its initial position by the return of the spring. 9 'During this movement the button 22 first meets the stop 20; it then drives the guide piece 19, the rod 18 and thus returns, by means of the lever 17, the freewheel in its inaotive locking position.
This blocking effected, the lever 8 and its button 22 return beyond the projection 20 in the initial position, shown in solid lines in FIG. 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Locking and unlocking do in a similar way fig. 3. In this example the lever 17 is connected to a specially shaped rod 38 terminated by a cylindrical sleeve 29, the diameter of which is reduced to 30 which also restricts its internal passage * 'In this sleeve slides a kind of piston 32 connected to the pedal 8 by the connecting rod 31 and which comprises two moving parts 34 which the spring 33 pushes back against the internal wall of the sleeve 29.
The operation of this device is as follows)
When the freewheel is blocked and the gear change commando is done by pressing the pedal 8, the rod 28 is driven in the direction of movement of the pedal by the action of the two parts 34 which meet the narrowed central part 30, so that the freewheel is released * This done, the advance of the rod 31 continues and the moving parts 34 are erased to pass into the arrangement 30, overcoming the resistance of their spring 33 .
The head 32 can then pass freely through the narrowed neck 30 and the pedal can therefore be pushed all the way to its extreme final position. When the pedal 8 returns, the movements are carried out in the opposite direction, in the sense that the meeting of the movable stops 34 and of the projection 30 first produces the displacement of the rod? and hence the new locking of the freewheel; the pedal 8 returning to its starting position causes the head 32 to pass through the retracted part 30 by compressing the spring 33 and erasing the parts 34.
According to figs 4 and 5 there is between the freewheel or between its control lever and the gearshift control lever a connection such that the momentary release of the freewheel is to a certain extent dependent on the maneuver of the gear. gearshift control lever.
In this embodiment, the freewheel is also interposed between the main shaft 5b and the shaft 11 and comprises the shoulder.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
element 10 with inclined planes on the shaft 5b, the jamming rollers 13 and the outer ring 12. The coupling claws 14 form an integral part of the shaft 3b and those 15 of the member 12 capable of being moves longitudinally on the shaft 11 without however being able to rotate on the latter.
Part 12 takes the form of a sleeve provided with a collar and its movement controlled by the insertion of a horizontal bar 40, the lateral arm of which engages in the collar of member 12, The lever 17 'serving to block and release at will the free wheel pivots on the axle 16' and its connection with the movable bar 40 is made on the one hand by the notch 40 'of the latter and 'on the other hand by a latch 42 with compressor spring 43 housed in the lever 17'. Normally the latch 42 engages in the deepest part of the notch 40 'so that following the forward and backward movement of the lever 17', the bar 40 moves in a corresponding manner, thus locking or unlocking the freewheel.
In the example shown, the control lever 45 of the speed change of the car can be moved in all directions and direc- tional thanks to a spherical ball 46 housed in the cover of the gear change boot. Its inner end engages in the selection bars of the gear change, of which only one 47 has been shown for simplicity and whose fork 48 engages in the collar of the balladeuse toothed wheel 49.
The shaft 5a enters on one side into the box * On the bolt 50 of the gear change control lever rotates a lever 51 with two arms 52 which rest on the free ends of a fork 53. The latter , placed as close as possible to the center of oscillation of lever 45,46 in the wall of the gear boot, can be moved vertically p.expl. at 54, this fork is connected to a Bowden wire guided in a sheath 55 etc. and with the end resting against the control bar 40 while being, guided at 56.

in such a way that the algebraic sum of the resistance * to friction generated by the toothed wheel 49, both on the shaft 5b and in the cooperating wheel as well as at the locking point 58 of the control bar 47 is greater to the algebraic sum of the frictional re-occurrences occurring during movement of member 12 on shaft 11 and between latch 42 and control rod 40.
According to the invention it is still possible to unlock the freewheel at will during a desired period, namely as long as the locking is not voluntarily brought back. This continuous release of the freewheel is achieved by the fact that it is provided for the clutch pedal a possibility of additional displacement in addition to the amplitude of the movement necessary to obtain the clutch of the engine; during this additional movement, the pedal acts on the freewheel control lever to cause it to lock. If, after releasing the freewheel, the clutch pedal is allowed to return, the freewheel remains released until further notice and the motor has no action on the drive wheels.
It is advantageous to use the back and forth movement of the pedal boat to release the freewheel, and this by moving the pedal backwards, under the pressure of the foot, by a certain distance exceeding its normal course. It is obvious that a lateral movement of the pedal could, according to the invention, render the same service.
Blocking and unblocking can be signaled to the driver by means of appropriate signals, eg expl. of electric light signals.
Figs 6 - 8 show a final embodiment of the invention. As mentioned above, fig. 8 shows the intermediate position of certain organs, a position reached by pressing the pedal more so as to give it an additional backward movement. In this position, the freewheel control fork is completely disengaged, so that the spring effecting

The connection between these two components is effected by a sliding yoke 71 in order to allow a certain empty stroke during which the movement of the pedal does not act on the rod 69 and the free wheel *

The control bar 68 is under the influence of a spring 72 which tends to move said bar in a direction which would cause the freewheel to lock. However, this movement is temporarily prevented on the one hand by the intermediary of a stop pawl 74 oscillating on the axis 73,
and on the other hand by notches and inclined planes cutters in the bar 66, the required position of the locking pawl 74 being brought about by a spring 75. A certain position

stop and drive of the moving part 77.
The operation is as follows!
Let us suppose that the freewheel is blocked and that the clutch pedal 70 is in one of the rest positions which is provided to it by the current or usual spring producing the coupling of the clutch plates (FIG. 6). The movement of the pedal from K to K 1 necessary to operate the disengaging of the motor is carried out without influencing the freewheel in any way, but when the latter must be released or made free, the pedal is pushed further beyond. from point K1; in this part of the stroke then occurs the displacement of the control bar 66 in the direction of the arrow shown in fig. 6. When the pedal 70 has reached Fr, the members occupy the position shown in FIG. 7.
Here the freewheel is released, that is to say made free, (shaft 64 not driven and it remains free as long as the pedal 70 is not pushed beyond point Fr. To indicate this state of affairs, in which the freewheel is released, a lamp can be lit on the dashboard by means of an alternating action switch 81. The latter is preferably oonjugé with the lever 68 of the freewheel.
This release of the freewheel produced when the pedal arrives at point Fr is retained even if the pedal 70 returns to the initial position shown in freeze 6 because the part 66 is held by the ratchet 74 jammed into the notch 79.
But if for some reason the freewheel roof * 'be blocked again, the pedal 70 is pressed a second time, accentuating its movement so that it arrives at B1; on the path from Fr to B1 by the action of 69 and 68 the control bar 66 also moves further in the direction of the arrow which brings the oliquet 74 in the rod position 8, in which the movable stop 77, having under the pressure of 74 momentarily pushed back its spring, engages in a notch the yawning beak of the pawl 77 which it blocks in this position As the pawl 74 is entirely disengaged from the bar 86, the spring 72 can
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
acts on the latter and on the control fork 65 so that the locking of the freewheel occurs immediately.
The pedal's return spring returns the pedal to position.
