<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

<Desc/Clms Page number 20>

"Improvements to the regeneration of burnt out electric lamp bulbs"
The present invention relates to the regeneration of the bulbs of burnt out electric lamps and the reconstitution of these lamps. We know that when the filament of an incandescent lamp breaks. the lamp is unusable, unless the said filament can be replaced and,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
except the lamps in which we have practiced, for this purpose rather crude replacements, most of the burnt out lamps have been thrown away and completely lost up to now.
This represents, from an economic point of view, a serious and unnecessary loss, especially since the breaking of the filament does not damage the bulb in any way.
The main object of the present invention is a new and improved process for the regeneration and reconstitution of these lamps, a process by which said lamps are restored substantially to their original appearance and are enabled to render the same services as when 'they were originally made. the applicant is aware that an attempt has been made to regenerate or renovate the burnt out electric lamps by piercing the bulb and inserting a new filament therein, or by cutting the bulb in two at the level of its neck, by intro- , gleaming in said bulb a new filament and re-sealing the two parts of said bulb to each other.
the application of these methods has however been limited to ampoules with a tip which can be emptied of air by said tip; in order to apply said processes to the ampoules in which the vacuum has been made from the other end, it was necessary to weld a tube on the ampoule to make the vacuum there again. Both of these processes are very coarse and result in a lower quality product, the appearance of which immediately reflects prior use and the fact that it is a reclaimed product.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The object of the present invention is a new process according to which grilled electric lanpes are treated so as to obtain a finished product having substantially the same quality and appearance as the original product.
In accordance with the present invention, the bulbs of burnt out electric lamps are regenerated by cutting out of the bulb the part of the neck which carries the foot carrying the filament inside the bulb-9 by removing said foot with its toasted filament, by inserting a no, - calf foot with a new filament in the bulb, by closing, sealing and shaping the posterior part of the bulb on the flared part of the foot by applying the developed heat and the pressure exerted by flames directed against the colt in the vicinity of its end.
According to another feature of the invention, the heated end of the bulb is supported so that it cannot flatten out inward, during the cutting operation, for example by causing a outward air pressure against the walls of said bulb.
The object of the present invention is, first of all, to regenerate the bulbs of the burnt out lampposts under conditions such that said bulbs can be used to reconstitute a new lamp which is substantially the reproduction of the original. In accordance with the procedure, we dismantle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
preferably the lamp burnt out, removing the cover first and then removing the old foot, while leaving a sufficient amount of the bulb cover to provide a support and closure for a new foot. However, in lamps with a sufficiently long cap, the present method can be carried out without removing the cap, as will be explained later.
The regenerated bulb must not only have a sufficiently long neck to receive the new foot but this neck must have a shape and suitable dimensions so that said foot can be accommodated therein and must also include a sufficient quantity of material to form a support and closure with the new foot, In accordance with the present invention, all these requirements are taken into consideration and the different phases of the improved process allow to produce a regenerated bulb as described. and thereby to produce a regenerated lamp which is substantially the reproduction of the bulb as it was originally manufactured, the phases in which the neck of the bulb is shaped to acquire the desired size and shape, in order to to receive the new foot,
may consist of a shaping or mandrel operation, after the removal of the old foot, or they can also be sewn in a new shaping, by means of pressurized air, during the removal of the old foot , these various operations being described in detail in what follows,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When regenerating, in accordance with the invention, lamps with a short neck, it is necessary that a quantity of the neck of the bulb, above the base, be recovered in order to constitute a quantity of material sufficient for the sealing, for the reception and for the support of the new foot.
To this end, the base is first removed and then the bulb is cut, above the base, so as to allow the removal of the old foot. This operation can be carried out in different ways as will be seen later. When not done by means of a flame which makes the glass plastic, the tip which served to empty the ampoule is first broken to prevent flattening or the formation of cavities in the heated neck.
It may also be desirable or necessary to lengthen the portion of the ampoule intended to receive the base a little. In accordance with one of the phases of the process which is the subject of the invention, the neck of the ampoule is lengthened while it is hot and plastic. This operation gives a greater length to the neck of the ampoule and makes cutting easier, as a result of the thinning of the cervical paroid. In some cases, the Applicant prefers to perform the cutting with a hotter flame than that used for the extension, whereby a faster and cleaner cut is achieved.
Preferably. in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, a stream of air directed outside against the hot neck of the ampoule is used, in accordance with another embodiment of the invention, to prevent it from flattening and to reshape it, so as to give it the outline of-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
sable and so that a new foot can be accommodated therein, eliminating any further need to re-shape the bulb. A method of regenerating used ampoules and manufacturing regenerated and improved temples, in accordance with the steps which have been described and others which will be described in more detail herein, constitutes a further object of the present invention.
The final phases of the method which is the subject of the present invention comprise the sealing of a new foot inside the regenerated ampoule. These phases include the proper disappearance of said foot inside the ampoule as well as the shaping and hermetic sealing of the neck on the ampoule by a new flame interception, as has been said further.
The lamp is then completed by evacuating it, sealing it and putting a base on the lamp,
These characteristics and other characteristics of the present invention will be better understood if reference is made to the following description of one of the preferred embodiments of the invention and of the mechanism suitable for this purpose, which mechanism is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 shows a turnstile used for removing the base of electric lamps (or rotary table), turnstile / which allows to heat the base of edited lamps' ,,

the holding member 18. The lamps are introduced at A from where they pass through a number of flames coming from gas burners 24 to be finally discharged at B.
The heated caps may be removed in any suitable manner, for example by means of a clamping device shown in Fig. 2. This device consists of a pedestal 26 which supports a fixed jaw 28 and a pivoting jaw 30. A pedal 32 and a connecting rod 34 starting from said pedal are provided for bringing the pivoting jaw closer to the fixed jaw and for gripping the base of the lanpa. When the lamp is thus held, the bulb can be easily removed from its base.
The part 35 on which is mounted the base of the cleansed hen is then preferably for example by means of a wheel 36 which removes all the cement, because it is understood that any cement which would remain on the base would be inconvenient for the operations described below. the treatment which will now be described comprises heating the part of the bulb intended to receive the base, with a view to various effects, and the vacuum in the bulb must first be broken, to prevent it from flattening when heated. This operation is carried out by breaking the sealing tip 38, for example by means of the device shown in FIG. 5, a device in which a fixed jaw 40 cooperates with the jaw 42 pivoting at 44.
The tip is placed between the two jaws and lowered

of lever 46 breaks the point and allows air to enter the bulb. The bulbs are then placed beforehand in a ... constant heating apparatus by an inverted bowl 48 in which the flames 50 are arranged, below the openings intended for. receive the ampoules. The cuvette can be rotated by means of levers 52 to bring the heated ampoules progressively in front of the operator. The ampoules are thus prepared for the next treatment.
The phases which will now be described comprise the heating of part 35 of the bulb intended to receive the base to the effect:
1 - lengthen the neck of the ampoule a little and
2 - cut the part which supports the foot 54 inside the bulb.
These operations will be made more comprehensible by the description of a part of the apparatus which can be used for the treatment. the turnstile shown in figure 7 comprises a pair of trays 56 mounted so that they can) rotate about a vertical and central axis, said 'trays carrying six vertical tubular shafts 58 (see element figure 12), on each shaft is mounted a transverse arm 60 carrying a pair of vertical rods 62 on which is a support 64 for the bulbs.
Means have been provided which intermittently cause the turnstile / to describe, in the direction of the arrow (see figure 7), an angular path corresponding to the distance between two stations and a belt 66 engaged with the pulleys 68

58 and the bulbs on the supports
64. The ampoules heated beforehand at 50 are placed on the turnstile at station a, as follows: The operator places the ampoule with the neck directed downwards on the support 64 and he tightens the wires 70 for supplying the running between a swivel m # choir
72 and the flattened part of a sliding tubing rod 74 which is separated inside the shaft
58.
The sliding rod 74 can slide freely inside said shaft 58 and its weight exerts a downward pull on the foot which is in the bulb, the rod not being supported at its lower end 76 as it rests. finds at posts $ a, he and c, The first angular displacement of the turn. niquet leads the charged bulb from the station to the station b where a gas burner 78 lightly plays several flames on the neck part
35, over an area of appreciable width, the heat being distributed evenly over the entire area, due to the fact that the bulb rotates continuously. the next angular displacement of the turnstile brings the bulb to station c where a similar burner 80 continues heating.
the operations carried out at stations b and c can be considered as preliminary heatings because they do not soften the glass enough to allow the sliding rod 74 to descend. At station d, the slider 76 of the sliding rod is located directly above the uppermost part 82 of a ramp 84 and the heater

which takes place at this station, by means of a large number of burners 86 so softens the glass that said sliding rod descends on part 82 of .la. ramp whereby the neck portion 35 of the bulb stretches 87 and the hot glass area widens considerably.
when the turnstile makes the next angular displacement, the button 76 of the sliding rod depends on a lower part 88 of the ramp, which accentuates the stretch of the neck of the bulb. as seen in 90.
When leaving the post, the joined and stretched portion 90 of the bulb is relatively thin.
EMI13.1
and we exert a 16gger air pressure inside the 11-bulb to prevent the thinned wall from flattening and to force it back somewhat inward, we will observe that the upper end of the tubular sliding rod 74 s 'fits on the broken tip of sealant 38 of 1 * ampoule and that during the passage of said ampoule from station d to station .1 (see figure 11)
pressurized air is supplied to said tip from a manifold 92 and through a series of relatively small openings 94 which correspond with the sliding rod 74 during this movement,
As it arrives at station e, the hot and relatively thin zone 90 of the bulb is subjected to the action of several flanmes, which have more or less the form of stingers, which are hot and which come from burners 96 arranged.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
leuns vis-à-vis others, the rod 74 coming at the same time vis-à-vis a larger air inlet orifice 98.
The intense flames which act on the. already heated zone serving to divide or cut the bulb so as to free the part which carries the foot 54. In this operation, a higher pressure is generated in the bulb from the orifice 98 and this pressure has the effect of pushing the cut part of the bulb outwards.
These operations are shown in a particular way in Figures 13, 14 and 15, Figure 13 showing the bulb - when it arrives at station e, Figure 14 showing the cutting effect achieved by the flames as well as the relief effect of the pressure exerted by the air and Figure 15 showing annealing and thickening of the end of the bulb after cutting.
It will be noted that these phases of the treatment
1 - remove the shoulder x from the bulb (see figure 13); <-
2 "- recover and slightly lengthen part of the neck 35 of the ampoule and
3 - leaves the open end of the bulb in a state where a new foot can be inserted therein and with it a complete and effective closure.
As the turnstile describes the next angular movement, the sliding rod 74 drops from the ramp 84, which further pushes the bulb foot apart. At station f, bulb and 1 * old pie-d are removed, leaving the @
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
device ready to receive another bulb at the introduction station a.
While the process which has just been described generally leaves the bulbs in a state where. we can introduce new feet, sometimes there is an ampoule whose neck has not been opened sufficiently to receive a new foot, as in the case of the ampoule shown in figure 20. In this case In this case, the neck of the ampoule must be redone to correct this defect. It is understood that the present method can only include cutting the ampoule around its neck 35, without using pressurized air, the cutting operation being followed by reshaping the open neck, so that the new foot can be introduced therein.
This cutting can be carried out by flames or in another way, for example as shown in Figures 16 and 17. In accordance with these figures, the neck 35 of the bulb is treated over its entire circumference, as follows: a line 100 by means of a diamond 101 and the heat is then applied to this line for example by means of a wire 103 / heated by electricity, which serves to cut or detach from the bulb, for example rupture, the part of the neck which supports the foot inside said bulb. The bulb obtained has substantially the shape shown in FIG. 20.
In Figures 18 to 20, there is shown the part of the present process according to which

a tourniquet 105 provided with members, comprising a belt 107 and supports 109 intended to support and to rotate without stopping several bulbs with their open end directed upwards, The tourniquet is rotated intermittently to bring the bulbs at the various stations a to g, a being the ampoule introduction station and g the unloading station. At positions and c, the shoulder 110 of the bulb is heated by means of burners 111.
At stations d and e, shaping tools are introduced into the ampoules and said tools are then moved to be brought against the walls of the neck, so as to reshape said walls by pushing them outwards while the ampoule rotates, other heating burners 113 being provided at these stations. The tools are moved outwards in progressive phases, whereby the necks are gradually reshaped. as can be seen in FIGS. 20, 21 and 22. It is understood that the tool at the station d performs the preliminary shaping while that of the station finishes this operation. tion.
As can be seen in FIG. 19, the various tools are automatically given their various movements synchronously with the operation of the turnstile by means of ramps 114 and 115 and of mechanisms which the said ramps operate. The result of this operation is shown in Fig. 22 according to which the neck of the ampoule has been appropriately reshaped so that a new foot can be inserted therein.
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
It is understood that the present process is applicable to the treatment of bulbs whose. The shapes vary considerably, for example in the ampoules 117 and 119 shown in Figures 32 and 33, the first of these ampoules having the relatively long neck and the latter having the very short neck, the first ampoule can be processed in various ways. execution of the present proceeda, even without removing the base 121, by cutting the neck at 123. The resulting ampoule can then be treated in the same way as that shown in figure 12: and in the manner described according to to produce the final lamp shown in Figure 42.
When treating the ampoule 119, however, it is essential that the cutting is performed at a point 125 very close to the seal with the foot and the neck must be stretched so that it leaves the regenerated flask a neck of a length substantially equal to that of the neck of the original ampoule.
This operation requires special treatment which is suitably carried out by an embodiment somewhat different from the present process, in which embodiment, for the cutting operation, hotter and sharper flames are used for the cutting operation. those used for reprinting. The various operations which constitute this treatment and part of the mechanism which can be used are shown in Figures 23 to 30.
This treatment is preferably carried out on a turnstile similar to that shown in FIG. 7 and the operations carried out

The operations that take place at station c '(see figures 23 and 27) are shown on

Figures 28, 29 and 30. The bulb with the neck 90 'stretched arrives at station c' in the state shown in Figure 28. Bills 127 and 129 are directed immediately to this part and supply is provided. oxygen to the nozzles 129, in order to produce several flames in the form of darts which quickly cut the wall. The arrival of oxygen is then stopped and all the burners are maintained at a relatively low temperature, so that they give relatively weak flames allowing a slight annealing.
During these operations, air is brought into the ampoule from pipe 98 ', as mentioned above and the air pressure% generated inside the ampoule expands the wall of the neck. outwardly, as seen in Figures 29 and 30, the annealing operation allowing the cut end of the ampoule to thicken somewhat, to take the shape shown in Figure 30 The neck of the ampoule, after this operation, is sufficiently long and wide to allow the introduction of a new foot into the ampoule as will be described later.
Figure 31 shows the shape that the neck of the ampoule would affect if pressurized air was not inside said ampoule. Relatively narrow coverage that the neck portion 135 would provide. directed inwards would require an expansion operation before a new foot is introduced therein, while the improved method, object of the invention, leaves the neck part 137 in the finished state,

As has been said above. One of the bets of the invention is to produce a regenerated lamp which is substantially a reproduction of the originally manufactured lamp and which has substantially the same overall length.
In the foregoing we have described that part of the present process in accordance with which the bulbs of burnt out lamps are regenerated for this purpose and we will now describe the sealing of a new foot in said bulbs, whereby the bulbs are produced. regenerated lamps improved in accordance with the invention. This part of the process is shown in Figures 35-40 of the drawing.
The sealing operation can be performed with advantage on a turnstile 141 similar to the turnstile shown in Figure 7.
The members 143 which the turnstile carries are capable of holding several bulbs with their opening directed downwards and means are provided for rotating said bulbs continuously. The tourniquet is rotated intermittently to bring the ampoules from an introductory station a, by shifts * successively to stations 11 to h inclusive. A sliding tube.

During the first rotational movement of the turnstile, the lower part 153 from the sliding tube 145 slides along a ramp 155, raising and lifting the foot to the proper height inside the ampoule. The neck of the bulb is preheated at poets b and c, by burners 157.

the function of the burner 165 is to anneal the sealed end of the lamp and the more particular function of the burner 167 is to heat the end of the lamp so that the operation of stretching to it can be applied to it. the bottom which must be executed next, the flame of the burner 167 waiting a little upwards in 1 = flared end of the lamp.
The final operation is performed on the bulb as the turnstile moves the bulb from station g. At this time the end 163 @ of the sliding tube 145 slides off the ramp and the weight of said sliding tube, which is gripped. to the tube 151, causes the downward stretching, that is to say outwardly of the bulb, of the sealed and heated zone, as shown in figure 40, This operation has the effect of remove the stress on the seal but does not affect the neck portion 164 which is cold and which is intended to receive the base, which part is shaped during the operations described above,
We then create a vacuum in the bulb by means of the tube 151

which swayed in the bulb through 14 flaring the nauite in 15 (see figure 35) and 1 tube is then (iéo or the nsuite The base 162 is applied / peed and sealed by fuaiort, after which we apply the base 169. The resulting lamp and which is shown in Figure 42 is substantially the reproduction of the lamp as originally constructed.

1.- Improved process for regenerating the bulbs of burnt out electric lamps, characterized by the fact that the part of the neck which supports the foot inside said bulb is cut from the bulb, which is then cut out. remove the foot carrying the toasted filament, insert a new foot inside the bulb and close, seal and shape the neck of the au-poule on the flared part of the foot , thanks to the heat and pressure of flame directed on the cold in the vicinity of its end.
