 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 EMI3.1
 60,0 % dé UnO 1,5 il de Cao2 20 , 0 $ de S:to g, 5 aO de p205 le reste étant Al2O3 et MgO,

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  Process for treating phosphate ores and slags and the like.

   In the treatment of ores, slags and the like by roasting or oxidative smelting, subsequent leaching and treatment of leaches and residues of leaching, which is the usual procedure for the production of many materials from ores, etc. .., when the starting materials contain phosphates, alkalies are obtained which, because of the non-negligible solubility of the phosphates in question, also contain a greater or lesser proportion of @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 these. this is why it is generally necessary to separate, by long and expensive separation processes, the phosphate from the lye before the subsequent treatment of the latter.

   The present invention is based on the idea of bringing in a practically insoluble form, already before binding and preferably during roasting, the phosphates contained in the raw materials to be treated, and thus completely avoiding their presence. in detergents, so that these can be processed directly to provide the desired final products.

   Starting from the fact, known per se, that phosphoric acid forms double compounds with alkaline earth metal oxides and certain halogens, in particular fluorine, it has been found that these compounds have, with respect to a series of solvents, a solubility appreciably lower than that of the phosphates of heavy metals or of alkali-earth metals of the usual composition or of a different composition, obtained by the method of treatment used hitherto, from ores, slags and materials analogues. This decrease in solubility manifests itself equally well for basic materials as for acidic materials containing phosphorus and this not only in relation to water and neutral solvents, but also in relation to weakly acidic or alkaline solutions.

   Accordingly, in accordance with the invention, phosphate ores and slags and the like are subjected to roasting or prior oxidative smelting, with the addition of fluorides and also, as far as necessary, of alkaline earth metal oxides. forming poorly soluble double salts with the phosphoric acid present, after which the roasting or smelting product is leached with neutral agents @

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 or weakly basic or weakly acidic. Solutions are thus obtained which generally do not contain phosphate or at least contain substantially smaller quantities of phosphate than hitherto.

   The mixing of the additions to the starting material, according to the invention, is carried out most simply by grinding, but they can also be melted with this material. The temperatures to be employed for a roasting according to the invention are limited upwards by the fact that it is necessary to prevent the material to be roasted from agglomerating to a high degree by concretion. Temperatures varying between approximately 600 and 1000 ° C., depending on the nature of the starting material to be treated, have been recognized as advantageous.

   The extensive formation of double salts is appreciably favored when the roasting is carried out under strongly oxidizing conditions, either by the application of a considerable excess of air in the oven to be roasted, or by additions, known per se, oxygen-giving or transmitting materials, such as alkali nitrates or chlorates. In all probability, the remainder of the phosphate attached to the metal oxide is thus released by overoxidizing the metal oxides, i.e. the metal phosphate, is split, the remainder of the phosphate being transformed rapidly and completely with the oxide of the alkaline earth metal and fluoride, forming the desired double salts.

   Here are a few non-limiting examples of embodiment of the invention.

    EXAMPLE I. A pig iron slag containing phosphate and vanadate and having the following composition: 4.25% V2O5 20.0% FeO
 EMI3.1
 60.0% of UnO 1.5 µl of Cao2 20.0 $ of S: to g, 5 aO of p205 the remainder being Al2O3 and MgO,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 was subjected to oxidizing and chlorinating roasting for 2 hours at 800 C with the addition of 20% cooking salt. Subsequent leaching with 5% sodium carbonate solution at 80 ° C provided a lye containing, with 5.5 g of V2O5 per liter, another 0.96 g of P2O5 per liter.

  However, by treating the same slag with an addition of 1% fluorspar and about 7% quicklime, a lye was obtained under otherwise equal conditions which, with 4.6 g of V2O5 per liter , contained only 0.055 g of P2O5 per liter. The proportion of V2O5 relative to P2O5 is therefore improved by approximately 17.5 times by the procedure according to the invention.

   While, by the present process, the subsequent treatment of the lye to obtain vanadic acid or industrially pure vanadium salts required the intercalation of another operation intended to separate the phosphate, it is possible to produce directly, from the lye obtained according to the invention, for example a vanadic acid containing less than 0.1% phosphorus and which can be used for the manufacture of high-value ferro-vanadium or other products containing vanadium .

  EXEMPILE 2 - The treatment of uranium ore containing 2% uranium and 0.6% P2O5 by roasting for 2 hours at 850 C without addition of lime and fluorspar and by subsequent leaching by means of a 5% sodium hydroxide solution at 80 ° C. produced lye containing 0.09 g of P2O5 per liter. But by adding before roasting a quantity of lime corresponding to the phosphate content of the ore and simultaneously 1% fluorspar, lye was obtained containing only about 0.01 P2O5 per liter.

  Also in this case, the proportion of UO3 relative to P2O5 2 was appreciably improved.
