Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  EXEMPLE 1

  A process for making relatively high molecular weight polyamine compounds.

   It is known that when urea is reacted at relatively high temperature with primary or secondary amines, the corresponding alkyl ureas are formed. It is further known that alcohols can be converted by means of urea to esters of carbamic acid.

   1,2-Oxyalkylamines have also already been reacted with urea by heating the mixture to temperatures between about 70 and 200, preferably 100-150, until the evolution of ammonia. diminish or cease. In this way, condensation products of a different constitution, hitherto unexplained, were obtained.

   Now it has been found that the reaction of urea with oxyalkylamines of the general formula
 EMI1.1

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 wherein R1 and R2 denote hydrogen or an alkyl group, surprisingly results in relatively high molecular weight polyamine compounds when the mixture is gradually heated to temperatures between about 200 and 250.
 EMI2.1

  Suitable oxyalkyl diamines are, for example, monoethanolamine, 1, - "- mono! Sopropanolquinine or Dutanolamine.

  The conversion is carried out by heating a mixture of substantially Oquimolecular amounts of oxyalkyliamine and temperatures of between about 120 and 20o, almost all of the nitrogen introduced by the urea separates out as ammonia. - niac and at the same time a little carbonic acid is released; between about 200 and 250 carbonic acid separates in abundance. The products: 1. Nitrogen content, which remain, are highly viscous liquids or solids, ranging in color from light yellow to brown, which are only partially distillable.

  The conversion can be carried out in the presence or absence of indifferent solvents boiling at corresponding elevated temperatures.

   From the products obtained, the residual carbonic acid is separated off by treatment with basic agents, such as a solution of caustic alkali, or organic bases, such as pyridine. The compounds thus obtained are more basic, and distillable to a greater extent, than the compounds obtained first.

   The products provided by the process are suitable as adjuvants or as intermediates for many purposes in the textiles, paper and leather industries.

   They can be used, for example, to animalize textiles, to improve the. moisture fastness of dyes or as additions to printing pastes.

   The parts indicated in the examples below are parts by weight.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

  EXAMPLE 1
A mixture of 1220 parts of monoethanolamine and 1200 parts of urea is slowly heated. At 120-130 a sharp evolution of ammonia begins. The temperature is slowly raised to about 220, and then together with the last remaining ammonia, relatively large quantities of carbonic acid are given off. By briefly heating to 250 the reaction is completed.

  A determination of the amounts of gas separated reveals that more than 95% of the ammonia introduced as urea and about 60% of the carbonic acid, which can be formed from the urea, has escaped. The residue consists of 1080 parts of a very viscous clear yellow liquid which is only distillable up to about half.

   An analogous product is obtained by conversion of monoisopropanolamine with 1 gram molecule of urea.

  EXAMPLE 2.

   52 parts of 1-amino-2-oxybutane are heated with 35 parts of urea for about 6 hours at 200-220. It is given off ammonia and carbonic acid. 60 parts of a brownish oil remain which, when allowed to stand, solidify as a crystalline mass and consist of a polyamino compound.

  EXAMPLE 3.

   48 parts of 1-amino-2-oxypentane are heated with 28 parts of urea for 10 hours at 200-240. It separates first from ammonia, then from carbonic acid. About 50 parts of a viscous yellowish-brown oil are obtained which is not distillable.

  EXAMPLE 4.

   200 parts of the polyamine compound obtained according to Example 1 and 200 parts of diethylene triamine are heated at 190 under a reflux condenser for several hours. On distillation of the reaction mixture under a pressure of 3 mm it first passes, up to 180, 200 parts of diethylene triamine. Between 180 and 240 then distill about 160 parts of an oil @

 clear viscous which is more basic than the original polyamine compound.
