Description

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  Process for the manufacture of polycondensation products.

   It is known that the manufacture of polyesters, polyethers, polyformals which can be made into shaping products having usable strengths to a certain extent, in particular knot strength, can only be done using moleaular distillation. If binary or ternary distillation is used for the removal of the last water residues, which would mean a simplification of the process compared to molecular distillation, the result is products which are not approximate. tively as resistant to knots as in the first method. Due to the complication of formation and their relatively low melting points, polyesters, polyethers and polyformals have not been able to secure a wide field of application.

   It has now been discovered that the specifically valuable properties of group-

 ments, such as ester, ether, formalin or acetal and ketal groups, when low-molecule condensation products which contain these groups once or more times in their molecule are subjected to polycondensation and additionally have two carboxylic or acid ester or, for example, acid halide groups, with approximately equimolecular amounts of hydrazine, which also has on each nitrogen a hydrogen atom capable of reaction at temperatures of 150-300, possibly with the use of diluents.

   If combinations thereof are employed, for example comprising a urea group as a bridging element, the properties may be changed in the direction of solvent insolubility or a higher melting point, so that it is possible. , according to the present invention, to influence upwards or downwards the solubility in solvents or the melting point. Polycondensates are thus obtained which can be considered, for example, as polyureas-polyhydrazides or polyesters-polyhydrazides.

   The following compounds will be mentioned as examples: X. OC. R. 0. CH2. O. R. CO. X

  One or two hydrogen atoms of hydrazine can

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 be substituted. However, there must still be a reactive hydrogen atom in the nitrogen atom. For example, according to the present process, the corresponding form is produced from two molecules of an oxyoarbonic acid and 1 molecule of butylformal, which first appears as a butyl ester and has the following constitution:
 EMI3.1
 H9C4. 00 C. R. OCH2. ., 0. R. C0004H9 This form is then condensed with the calculated amount of hydrazine.

   The condensation of the low-molecular condensation products with hydrazine can take place under pressure, at atmospheric pressure or under vacuum. A combination of these methods is often particularly advantageous. When using compounds containing reactive ester groups located at the ends, the addition of sap-forming catalysts, such as for example small amounts of alkali, is advantageous. The alcohol which separates out can be continuously distilled off.

   The low molecule condensation products are subjected to polycondensation with approximately equi-molecular amounts of hydrazine. As starting materials, aliphatic, saturated, or hydroaromatic compounds are employed, the carboxylic, ester or halide groups of which are as far as possible at the ends. The condensation can take place in the melt or also in suitable diluents, such as deoaline for example. Isolation of the dissolved polycondensation product is accomplished by distillation of the suspending agent or by pouring into a substratum which does not dissolve the polycondensation product.

  For the production of viscosity stable polycondensation products, viscosity stabilizers such as, for example, mono-acids can be employed.
