 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

     'En réalité, on maintient le contrôle par une zone de limi- tation ou de retardement de l'alimentation. Les particules peu- vent former pont entre les organes de trémie 15 et 46 et peuvent se déverser vers l'espace A aussi rapidement que le permettent les dimensions du sommet de la cavité de broyage. On comprendra

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 / être faits plus légers; leur durée d'existence est augmentée;

  "improvements made or relating to grinding units for conical grinders".

   The present invention relates to an improved gyratory-type mill and aims to provide an improved method of milling.

   Another object is to provide an improved conformation of the grinding cavity.

   Another object is to provide an improved bowl liner or concave ring, either ring or segmented.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   Another object is to provide an improved shell of the crusher nut.

     Another object is to provide improved means for controlling, by delay or interruption, the passage through the grinding zone of the particles undergoing grinding.

   Another object is to provide improved means for controlling and limiting the feed or movement of particles in the grinding zone.

   Other objects will become apparent from time to time during the description and in the claims.

   The present invention provides a bowl liner or concave ring for gyratory mills, enclosing a generally conical body, having an interior and lower surface generally tapered and an interior upper surface flared towards the end. outside from the upward extension of the tapered bottom surface, such that the top of the liner is substantially thinner than the bottom.

   The present invention further provides a gyratory crusher including a bowl normally attached to a main frame, a nut within said main frame and means for imparting a gyratory motion to the nut, a bowl liner or a concave ring. and means for removably fixing it to the bowl, means for removably fixing an envelope to the nut, this envelope and the liner delimiting between them a grinding cavity, this envelope and this liner generally having surfaces of opposing and lower parallel conical grinding and upper surfaces which move apart from each other to define a space for adjusting and restricting the feed.

   The present invention further provides a method of controlled grinding which incorporates the features of providing a grinding zone having an upper feed opening.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and a lower discharge opening, to adjust and maintain a determined and limited supply of particles in the feed opening of the grinding cavity, to interrupt the downward movement of the particles in the grinding cavity and maintaining at the opening of the grinding cavity a mass of feed restricting particles, substantially bridging the opening in the grinding cavity.

   The invention is shown more or less schematically in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical axial section showing the most important parts of a gyratory crusher. axial
Figure 2 is a sectional / vertical on a larger scale showing the grinding cavity when closed, with a variation of the bowl and its liner, and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the open side of the grinding cavity.

     The circumferential wall of the main frame of a gyratory crusher has been designated in the drawings by 1. The details of the main frame are not fully shown, and in themselves, do not form part of the present invention. However, there is shown an upper circumferential rim 2, extending outwardly, which. receives a bowl adjustment ring 3¯, the opposite parts having corresponding tapered outer 4 and inner 5 surfaces. At 6, any suitable means have been indicated for holding the bowl adjustment ring 3 normally pressed in the position in which it is shown in Figure 1.

   This may for example be a pin extending downwardly through a helical spring 7 and provided at its lower end with any suitable stopper, the spring 7 being compressed against the stopper at the lower end of the spring. pin 6 and any suitable segment 8 below flange 2.

   The bowl adjustment ring 3 has internal threads.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   Rings 9 which receive external threads 10 of the bowl construction indicated generally at 11. There is shown at 12 a bowl liner or concave ring which can be suitably attached to the bowl. inside the bowl or upper wall. Shown are tabs 13 in the form of hooks, engaged with U-bolts designated 14.

   The precise shape of the bowl liner or concave ring 12 will be discussed later. 15 is any suitable conical feed-receiving funnel suitably mounted on the construction of the bowl 11. is a crusher shaft which can be rotated by the rotation of a surrounding sleeve 21 with an eccentric opening. cudgel. The sleeve carries at its upper end the toothed wheel 22 in engagement with the toothed wheel 23 of any suitable drive shaft, not shown here. Under the effect of the rotation of the sleeve 21 with eccentric opening, the shaft 20 is made to rotate around the center marked X. The shaft 20 has an upper part 24 which receives the nut of the crusher 25.

   The nut 25 has a downward convex spherical bearing 26 received in any suitable corresponding bearing member 27 of the cover piece 28 which covers and encloses the toothed wheel 22.

  It can rest, for example, on an extension or any suitable part 29 of the main frame. Appropriate seal adjustment portions generally indicated at 30 are formed on the nut apron 31, extending outwardly, and engage with opposing plugs 32 on the shell. cover plate 28. 35 is a feed plate holder, carrying a feed plate 36 fixed for example by bolts 37. The member 35 rests on an upwardly extending sleeve 38 and is attached thereto. here by screws 39.

   The sleeve 38 is fixed to the top of the nut 25 by screws 40. As shown in Figure 1, the sleeve 38 has a lower annular portion 41, extending outwardly,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 externally threaded at 42 to receive the ring 43 for setting the casing. The ring presses down against the envelope 45, the details of which will be explained later. 46 is any suitable cover guide member or inner hopper, which can be secured to ring 43 by screws 47.

   In normal use of the device, the material to be ground is sent to the top of the plate 36 distributing the feed. Any suitable means of limiting the feed can be employed. One can, for example, employ a feed spout, not shown here, which is generally vertically adjustable by moving towards and away from the central portion of the feed plate 36. When the nut and the feed plate are rotated by the rotation of the sleeve 21 pierced with an eccentric opening, the material is delivered over the outer edge of the feed plate 36 and falls on the hopper 15 and is stopped by it. this.

   The material then slides down and inward over the hopper 15 and is stopped by the hopper portion 46. From this point on, and without initial acceleration by gravity, the particles enter. the grinding cavity delimited between the lining of the normally fixed bowl 12 and the normally rotating casing 45.

   It will be understood that, in the event of an obstruction or presence of non-crushable material in the grinding zone between the opposed members 12 and 45, the springs 7 on the side of the grinder where the non-crushable material is located compress, and ring 3 swings upwards, bringing with it the bowl liner 12, to. apart from that normally fixed.

   It will also be understood that the speed of the mill is adjusted relative to the length of turn of the casing 45 approaching and moving away from the liner of the bowl 12 placed above, so as to allow the material to be subjected to crushing to fall

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 / freely moving away from the bowl 12 after each grinding pinch. This is to say that the movement of the casing 45, as it moves away from the liner 12, is faster than the acceleration due to the gravity of the crushed particles. These therefore fall freely until they are again picked up or struck by the casing 45 and are pushed against the liner 12 for a further crushing nip.

   It can be seen from FIG. 1 that the liner 12 has a lower surface 12a, generally conical, which is extended at its upper edge by a surface 12b which is somewhat tapered outwards. This in turn ends with an upper surface 12c which has generally the same angle, in radial vertical section, as the surface 12a. Although the conformation or contour of the liner 12 can be varied, it is found advantageous to create a widening of the grinding cavity at the upper end of the liner.

   Similarly, a thinning of the casing 45 has been created. It is shown with a generally tapered surface 45a which generally conforms to the surface 12a of the liner 12: it is then reduced or curved sharply towards inside, as in 45b, and may have a slight thickening at its upper edge as in 45a. The part of the casing which does not effectively crush against the liner 12 is tapered or chamfered at 45d. The result of the conformation of the two wear-bearing members is to provide an annular, enlarged grinding space A between the upper parts of 12 and 45.

   In communication with this enlarged grinding space 1, there is provided the grinding space B between the opposing surfaces 12a and 45a.

     In effect, control is maintained by a zone of restriction or delay in feeding. The particles can form a bridge between hopper members 15 and 46 and can flow to space A as quickly as the dimensions of the top of the grinding cavity allow. We will understand

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 that, in the mill shown in Figure 1, a relatively fine feed is employed, not comprising particles of sufficient size to bridge the gap between surfaces 12c and 45c. A circumferential pocket is provided which can be abundantly filled with particles, which bite against the surface 45b which stops them.

   The result is the formation of a regulated stop or feed restriction zone, through which no particles can fall without being crushed. A certain amount of adjustment or sizing milling is produced in space A and the initially reduced particles flow downward into milling space B and is further reduced by a regulated mill nip. This pinching in zone B is regulated as to time by the limiting action of zone A. It can be seen that when using the device, the movement of the particles through the grinding zone is therefore positively regulated. This is part of a series of stopping or adjustment phases, or stopping points or zones. The particles can be stopped at the top of the plate 36.

   They are again stopped when they meet the hopper 15. They are stopped again when they meet the inner hopper 46 and are prevented from immediately moving downward into the grinding space A. Their movement by the Gravity can be picked up at the top of surface 12c, but surface 45b creates a final stopping zone. When the particles subsequently enter the grinding space B, they are crushed by a controlled crushing nip, as explained above.

   There is shown with the aid of Figures 2 and 3 an alternative form of the lining of the bowl and of the casing. An example of a bowl liner 112 which has a final grinding surface 112a has been shown. Above this is an initially outwardly flared surface 112d. Above this is a surface 112c which may have sensitive-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   moves the same angle as 112a. Above this is a new outwardly flared surface 112d which terminates in an upper final surface 112e having substantially the same angle as the lower surfaces 112a and 112c. In opposition to the liner 112 is the shell 145 with its lower surface 145a opposite the surface 112a of the liner.

   At its upper edge, the surface 145a ends with a flange 145b.

  Above this is a surface 145c which together with the opposing surfaces 112b and 112c forms an enlarged area for grinding or receiving material, indicated by C. The surface 145c ends with a new shelf 145d above the surface. - what is a surface 145e having generally the same angle as the surfaces 145a and 145c. At the top of the envelope is finally the enlargement 145f.

   It can therefore be seen that in the form of FIGS. 2 and 3, instead of the simple stop at 45b of FIG. 1, two stop shelves 145b and 145d are provided. There is therefore a lower enlarged grinding zone Ce an upper zone D, widened further, for grinding or receiving the material. The parts are shown in Figure 2 at their greatest distance, while in Figure 3, they are shown at their greatest distance. The part of the embodiment of Figures 2 and 3 is substantially the same as that of the shape of Figure 1, except that an additional stop surface is provided. In both forms, when the particles escape from or through each stopping zone, they begin their free fall under the effect of gravity at that point.

   There is no possibility of improper gravitational acceleration which would force the particles to pass too quickly through the grinding zone. only to provide proper grinding. In practice, the use of bowl liners and casings in the shape shown herein results in increased grinding capacity, better sized product and smoother operation of the grinder.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 in addition, it allows a / great economy of metal. Bowl liners and casings are usually made from manganese steel, which is a relatively expensive alloy and is hard to process. it is found that with the forraes of liners and envelopes shown here, the life span of the liner or the individual casing is greatly increased.

   When the opposing surfaces lose by wear the ideal shape shown in the figures, they continue to retain a profile which is effective for grinding. Not only is the saving in metal considerable, but the saving in shredding equipment is great, as the machine is stopped less frequently for renewing or replacing liners and casings.

   It will be seen that, although a practical device of operation and a practical and useful method carried out by it have been described and shown, many changes can nevertheless be made in the dimensions, shape, number, shape. layout and proportions of the parts, without departing from the essence of the invention. The description and the drawings should therefore be taken in a broad sense rather illustrative or schematic than limiting of the particular details described and represented herein. For example, the liner or the concave ring can be made in segments or in courses, in one or in several pieces. The same is true of the envelope.

   With respect to Figures 2 and 3, it will be understood that two or more stop or adjustment shelves may be employed instead of the single shelf of Figure 1.

   The use and operation of the invention are as follows:
The invention is employed in combination with a gyratory crusher in which a bowl having the liner 12 or 112 is placed over a gyrating nut having the casing 45 or 145. Although the invention can be used. used with a large number of crushers, it has been shown as the main

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

   @ ment in combination with a so-called short nut crusher, used for relatively fine grinds. This is not a question of limitation but of representation.

   In any gyratory crusher, especially in short nut or fine grinding mills, the capacity and general mechanical operation are affected by the fact that the linings and casings in the earlier cases take a certain time. to wear down to a point of maximum capacity.

    When this point is reached, their maximum capacity lasts, for a shorter period of time. Then there is a gradual decrease in capacity due to a narrowing of the feed opening. For example, in a particular installation, a group of rianganese wear parts lasted 4 to 5 weeks, but during this time only about 1 week of maximum capacity was obtained. The contour of the grinding cavity, as shown in the drawing, has been created to maintain as much as possible a zone of parallelism, shown in B, of constant length for the entire life of the parts. wear.

   This zone of parallelism is represented; - felt at 12a and 45a in FIG. 1, and also at. 11 Sa and 145a in FIG. 2. The entry into this zone of parallelism is effected only by the movement of the nut. No grinding takes place except when the above faces are parallel or approximately parallel. The zone A limiting the supply controls and regulates the speed of supply to the zone of parallelism B. In the form of FIGS. 2 and 3, a. double zone or two limiting zones C and D. Final grinding starts below the limiting lip or shelf 45b or 145b. There is no acceleration due to gravity from above the lips.

   In Figures 2 and 3, regular grinding also takes place below the lip 145d. The result is that there is only a sizing grinding pinch in the areas of parallelism; the grinding organs can

 / be made lighter; their duration of existence is increased;

   metal costs are reduced and the tonnage of crushed material per pound of manganese used is increased.
