<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

GRILLING GAS DESARSENIFICATION METHOD AND APPARATUS.
A process is known for the de-arsenification and purification of roasting gas by means of sulfuric acid in which, before separating the arsenic dissolved in the acid, the impurities which do not contain arsenic are removed, for example. lead and iron, then only the separation of the arsenic is carried out. In this case, this separation of the arsenious anhydride from the acid liberated from the lead and iron is carried out by cooling the acid, advantageously by diluting it and optionally by stirring it, in large deposit tanks.
There is also a method of cooling roasting gas by direct contact with a liquid circulating in a closed circuit,
in which only part of the circulating wash acid is cooled and arsenious anhydride is removed from this partial stream, after which the partial stream is mixed again with the circulating wash acid.
Starting from the latter process, it is proposed, according to the invention, to effect the cooling of the partial stream of the circulating washing acid by continuously stirring the acid in countercurrent with a cooling agent, without prior separation of impurities or arsenious anhydride, but so that all of the separated crystals remain in the partial stream during cooling until this partial stream has cooled to about 30 C and below. In this way, the crystals which separate at the onset of cooling must therefore remain as seeds in the washing acid until all of the other crystals therein have separated.
The separation of the precipitated crystals is then carried out in a separate operation.
An installation for carrying out the process is shown in the accompanying drawing, by way of example. In this installation, a partial stream of the acid which flows from the washing tower 1 is passed through line 2 into the tanks 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 connected in series and provided with agitators. - tor, and it is cooled in successive stages, for example from 82 C to 35 C
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
while stirring it, countercurrently passing a stream of refrigerant (eg fresh water) through line 170 The partial stream of cooled acid leaves the last stirred tank 7 through line 8 and is distributed among the deposit tanks 9,
10 and 11 from which the deposited crystal sludge can be removed periodically or continuously via line 12 '. The weirs 12 pass the purified acid into the collecting tank 13 with the main partial stream of the washing acid coming from the bypass line 16, and the acid passes back to the washing tower 1 through the pump 14 and the driving 150
For the purposes of the invention, the term “riddling or stirring” is understood to mean any kind of movement imparted to the washing acid during cooling, provided that the aim is achieved which consists in achieving on the one hand a better transmission of heat and on the other hand a suspension of the crystals. Instead of or alongside mechanical agitators, a magnetic, electrical or acoustic movement of the washing acid can therefore also be taken into account.
The method of the invention can also be applied with the same benefit to existing installations in which there is, beyond the washing tower 1, a deposit tank for the prior clarification of the hot acids in circulation, for example a tank. conical bottom or hydrocyclone. From this pre-clarification tank, the hot acid passes, as is known, to an acid cooler to be then returned to the cooled state in the circulation cycle of the washing acid.
In installations of this kind, the acid coming from the clarification and enriched in sludge in the conical deposit tanks, can be led into one or more tanks provided with agitators 3 to cool it and completely separate it. bueo
Both in the last-mentioned procedure and in that described at the start, the sludge which leaves the last stirrer cooler at the same time as the cooled acid is separated from the latter, advantageously by centrifugation, and can be used for this purpose in particular automatic distribution overflow troughs.
