 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

   SANDOZ S.A., residing in BALE (Switzerland).

  METALLIZABLE DISAZOIC COLORANTS, THEIR PREPARATION AND APPLICATION.

   The present invention relates to novel disazo dyes which mount on cotton and regenerated cellulose fibers and whose dyes can be treated with metal-releasing agents.

  Metallic dyes are distinguished by remarkable fastness properties; it is thus, for (-example ,. that dyes treated with a complex compound of copper with possibly basic active cation (this compound being obtainable according to Swiss patents 253,709 and 261,048 to 261,052) resist to baking and acids and have excellent lightfastness. Dyes treated with copper salts are likewise perfectly lightfast and furthermore lightfast and lightfast. Besides, solids in alkaline medium.

   The new dyes are prepared by tetrazotating 1 molecule of 4.4'-diamino 3.3'-dihydroxy diphenyl l.l'-urea 6.6'-disulfonic acid and then coupling the tetrazo compound with 2 molecules of a hydroxy naphthalene free of sulfonic groups and carboxylic and which copulates in the ortho position to its hydroxyl group.

   The hydroxy naphthalenes contemplated as coupling components are, for example, 2-hydroxy naphthalene, 2-hydroxy-naphthalenesulfonamides and their nitrogen-substituted derivatives, 2.7-dihydroxy naphthalene, 2-hydroxy 6 or 7-methoxy naphthalene 2-hydroxy 8-acylamino naphthalenes, 2-hydroxy 8-carbo-alkoxy amino naphthalenes,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 1-hydroxy 4-methyl naphthalene, 1-hydroxy 4-benzoyl naphthalene, 1-hydroxy 5.8-dichloro naphthalene and 1.5-dihydroxy naphthalene.

   The coupling of the tetrazotated urea derivative with the coupling component is preferably carried out in a medium made alkaline with sodium or potassium hydroxide, optionally in the presence of an organic tertiary base such as pyridine or quinoline or a crude mixture of pyridine bases.

  When coupling is complete, the disazo dye is isolated and dried in the usual manner.

   The following examples illustrate the invention without limiting it.

  Parts are parts by weight and percentages are percentages by weight.

  EXAMPLE 1.

   8.7 parts of 4.4'-diamino 3.3'-dihydroxy diphenyl 1.1'-urea 6.6'-disulfonic acid are dissolved in a solution of 3.2 parts of sodium hydroxide and 130 parts of water. 2.8 parts of sodium nitrite are added to the solution and then slowly poured, about 15, into a mixture of 18.5 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid, 10 parts of water and 10 parts of ice. When the reaction is complete, the tetrazo compound is separated by adding sodium chloride to the reaction solution and then filtered. At room temperature, and with stirring, the paste obtained is incorporated into a solution of 12.6 parts of 2-hydroxy naphthalene 6-carobxylic acid phenyl-amide, 10 parts of a concentrated solution of hydroxide ammonium.

  10 parts of pyridine and 200 parts of water. When coupling is complete, the disazo dye formed is separated off by adding sodium chloride to the solution and filtered. it is washed with an addition of sodium chloride and then dried in vacuo. It dyes cotton and regenerated cellulose fibers in violet-red shades which, after copper plating, offer excellent resistance to washing and light.

  EXAMPLE 2.

   8.7 parts of 4.4'-diamino 3.3'-dihydroxy diphenyl 1.13'-urea 6.6'-disulfonic acid are dissolved in 130 parts of a 2.5% solution of sodium hydroxide. After the addition of 2.8 parts of sodium nitrite the solution is poured in slowly, at about 15 and with stirring. in a mixture of 18.5 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid. 10 parts water and 10 parts ice.

  Once the tetrazotation is completed, 8.7 parts of 2-hydroxy naphthalene are incorporated into the suspension and then the pH of the reaction mass is brought to a value of 5 to 6 by adding approximately 7 parts of a 30% solution of sodium hydroxide. Then 10 parts of pyridine and 16 parts of 30% sodium hydroxide solution are added and stirred until coupling is complete. The disazo dye formed is then precipitated with sodium chloride, filtered, washed with 20% sodium chloride solution and dried in vacuo. This dye dyes cotton and regenerated cellulose fibers in violet-red shades which, when coppery, offer excellent fastness to washing, to light and in acid and alkaline environments.
