 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

  "Process for kneading cooked sugar intended for the manufacture of caramel candies and chilled plane machine for carrying out this process"
The present invention relates to a process for kneading boiled sugar intended for the manufacture of caramel candies and to a machine with a cooled plane and movable arms for carrying out the process.

   It is known that for the manufacture of caramel candies it is necessary to knead the mass of cooked sugar in order to incorporate therein small quantities of substances intended to give it taste and flavor.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

   This work is very difficult because it must be carried out in a uniform way and at a relatively high speed, to prevent the mass from cooling down, becoming viscous and preventing the work from continuing; on the other hand, we cannot increase the initial temperature of the sugar to prevent it from changing color, turning into caramel.

   So far we know a machine for this purpose whose active organ is constituted by a piston which moves vertically by compressing the mass and forcing it to change shape, but while it is expensive and bulky machine, the work it does leaves something to be desired.

   On the contrary, the process according to the present invention repeats in a simple manner and on a larger scale. same movements that are performed when kneading by hand.

   The process consists in placing the mass of cooked sugar on a cooled surface, in taking it between two scoops in the form of jaws which approach each other with a substantially horizontal movement, in lifting it partially. with the upward movement of said two skins after they have moved to the position of minimum reciprocal distance, then lowering them and at the same time moving them away from each other, rotating a quarter turn of the support of said mass around a vertical axis and then in the repetition of these same movements.

   The machine according to the invention essentially comprises a plane which can be rotated and which is cooled by circulating a fluid, two substantially horizontal arms each of which bears at its extremity.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 including a jaw-shaped shovel and the means necessary to give movement to said arms and to said turntable.

   A particular characteristic of the machine according to the invention consists in the fact that said shovels or jaws are not symmetrical, one of them terminating with a knife edge and the other with an edge of relatively high thickness. to force the mass to turn on itself when the jaws are in the closed position.

   A second characteristic of said machine consists in the fact of presenting means for obtaining from a single electric motor two different operating speeds, so that work can be started at a relatively high speed and then continued at idle speed. when the colder mass exhibits greater resistance.

   Another characteristic of the machine consists in the fact that all the movements of the worktable and the arms are synchronized, being obtained from the same shaft by means of a group of cams.

   Other peculiarities and characteristics of the invention will emerge clearly in the remainder of the description with reference to the accompanying drawing in which a preferred embodiment of the machine has been shown by way of example. according to the invention.

   More particularly fig.1 shows a front view of the machine. provided with its covers, fig. 2 is a plan of the same machine, fig. 3 is a front view of the internal mechanisms,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 fig.4 is a top view of the machine without the arms and without the turntable,. Fig. 5 is a vertical section approximately along the line V-V of Fig. 4.

   Referring to the drawing (fig. 1), the machine comprises a frame 1 enclosing the various motion transmission members and carrying at its higher end a table 2, the shape of which is shown more clearly in fig. 2, comprising a cylindrical basin 3, of limited height, and a raised enclosure 4. Below the cylindrical part there is a cavity through which the cooling water passes.

   On the table 2 can slide the ends 5 and 6 of two shovels in the form of jaws carried by the arms 7 and 8 which can undergo movements of approach from one to the other and also recoil movements and furthermore, they can be raised or lowered respectively, as will be better explained below.

   The position in which the shovels are raised is shown in Fig. 1 with dotted lines.

   Note that scoop 5 has a lower edge, indicated by 9, with a sharp edge, while scoop 6 has a substantially blunt edge, indicated by 10.

   The organs causing and transmitting the different movements are shown in Figs 3, 4, 5.

   The motor 11 by the pulley 12 and a set of trapezoidal belts, not shown, actuates the pulley 13 which rotates the shaft 14 on which is supported, free to turn, the toothed wheel 15, and at the opposite end the wheel toothed 16, it is also on the shaft 14. Opposite the latter is placed a counter-shaft 17 extending

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 approximately for the entire length of the frame and carrying a caliber wheel 18 in engagement with said idler wheel 15, and a wheel 19, also caletée, in engagement with idler wheel 16.

   Above the shaft 14 and between said idlers 15 and 16 is placed a coupling sleeve 20 actuated by a fork (not shown), controlled by a rotating arm 21 actuated in turn by lever 22. This sleeve 20 carries teeth which can mesh with one or the other of the idle wheels 15 and 16, making it integral in rotation with the shaft 14.

   The wheels 15 and 18 have a different diameter and hence the transmission of movement from the wheel 15 to the wheel 18 corresponds to a reduction in speed while the transmission between the wheel 16 and the wheel 19 (having the same diameter). takes place without angular speed variation).

   On the shaft 17 there is also a bevel wheel 23 meshing with another bevel wheel 24, the shaft of which exits inside the frame of the machine and can also be actuated by means of the small hand wheel 25.

   On the same shaft 17 is still mounted idle the wheel 26 which can be coupled by the action of the sleeve 27 controlled by the fork 28.

   This wheel is continuously engaged with the wheel 29 which is wedged on the shaft of the worm 30 intended to effect the rotation of the table 3. For this purpose the screw 30 meshes with the helical wheel 31 (fig.3) which is secured to the plate 3.

   Again on the shaft 17 is worm gear 32 controlling the group of different cams as will be better explained below.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   As seen in fig. 5, the screw 32 meshes with a helical wheel 33 mounted on the axle 34 supported in turn in the bearings 35 and 36 (fig: 4) and carrying three cams indicated by 37 , 38, 39.

   The first of them controls the fork 28 prc referring to the coupling of the table, the second, indicated by 38, controls the reciprocating, substantially horizontal movement of the arms 7 and 8 while the third, indicated by 39, controls the raising and lowering of these arms marls.

   As seen in fig. 5, the cam 38 carries a groove 40 into which is introduced the pivot-shaped end 41 of a rocker 42 having the center at 43 and which at the other end 44 is hingedly connected with the end of a connecting rod 45 the foot of which is pivoted at 46 on a pivot projecting from the wheel 47 having the axis at 48 and in engagement with the pinion 49 having the axis at 50 and in turn carrying a bevel pinion 51 (fig. 3) which meshes at the same time with two bevel gears 52,53 carried respectively by the shafts 54 and 55. Each of these shafts is connected at the ends by a universal joint or universal joint 56,57 and respectively 58,59 au corresponding bevel gear.

   The outer pinion meshes with the bevel wheel 62 having the same axis as the cylindrical wheel 63 meshing with the cylindrical wheel 63 '. The latter is engaged with a denture 64 integral with the arm 8 and serving to control the horizontal movements.

   On the opposite side (corresponding to the left part of figs.3 et 4) a similar transmission also has a wheel 65 serving for reversing the direction of movement.

   The cam 39 in turn has a channel 66 into which the pivot-shaped end of the balance 68 enters.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 pivoted at 69 which by means of the other arm is hinged at 70 to the connecting rod 71 of the pusher 72 knee-connected at 73 with the sleeve 74 'which, by means of members not shown, in turn pivots on the axis of the wheel 63 'producing the advancement of the arm.

   The arrangement is similar on the opposite side, except for the fact that the transmission further comprises the wheel 65 for reversing the movement of the corresponding arm.

   The shovels 5 and 6 and their arms are hollow and cooled by circulating a fluid, generally by circulating water. The arms 7 and 8 are carried by sleeves 74 ′ movable around an axis coinciding with the axis of the wheel 63 ′, being under the action of the pushers 72 and are also provided with shock absorbers 74 which slow down the movement. during the descent.

   The operation of the machine which has just been described can take place in three ways, that is to say - by hand control, - by motor control, at high speed, by motor control, at slow motion.

   The hand control is only used to perform a small movement, for example for setting the machine and is performed by acting on the handwheel 25 which is located outside the frame; by means of the coupling of toothed wheels 24, 23, the shaft 17 is actuated and consequently all the movements which are described below are brought about at a very low speed.

   When the machine is operated by hand, the lever 22 is held in the central position corresponding to the neutral position of the coupling 20, the wheels 15 and 16 remain idle and there is no transmission between them. 'tree 14 and tree 17.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

   On the contrary, by bringing the lever 22 to the right position (fig. 4), the coupling 20 activates the wheel 16 which, by means of the wheel 19, actuates the shaft 17 making it rotate at the same speed as the wheel. tree 14; this is the normal operating condition of the machine.

   Finally, if the lever 22 is brought to the left position (fig. 4), the coupling 20 connects the shaft 14 with the wheel 15 and hence the rotation of the shaft 17 is produced by means of the wheel. 18 with speed reduction
It is quite obvious that in the three cases the movement of the arms 7, 8 and the movement of table 2 will always take place in the same way, always dealing with the rotation of the shaft 17 which by means of the screw 32 is transmitted. - to the various cams mounted on the shaft 34. The synchronism or respectively the succession of the various operations is taken into account, ensuring that the peripheral contour of each cam corresponding to one revolution of the shaft 34, has active arcs and arcs of rest suitably spaced and in a suitable reciprocal phase.

   At the start of work, the central table 3 is at rest and the shovels 5 and 6 are moved away from each other by touching the table.

   The material to be mixed (cooked sugar) is poured into the middle of the table 3.

   The current is given to the motor 11, and by bringing the coupling 20 in the right position (fig.4) by means of the wheels 16; 19 the shaft 17 is actuated by making it rotate at the same speed of the shaft 14.

   By the action of the cam 38 (fig. 5) by means of the balance 42 and the connecting rod 45, the axis 50 (fig. 3) is rotated which, using the pairs of bevel wheels 51, 52 and respectively

 ment 51, 53 rotates the shafts 54, 55 the first of which rotates the wheel 63 '(fig. 3) in an anti-clockwise direction, then it moves the arm 8 to the left while the shaft 55, because of the presence of the intermediate wheel 65, the wheel 63 'turns clockwise, controlling the arm 7 and therefore moves said arm to the right.

     'Starting from the approach of the two shovels 5, 6 up to about 10 cm from each other. In this moment the balance @ 42 and the connecting rod 45 communicate to the shaft 50 a rotation in the opposite direction 'and the arms 7, 8 start to move away from each other without lifting, and hence the mass received: a first treatment.

   Immediately after we have another movement of approach of these arms which at the same time are raised. This lifting is produced by the fact that in this phase the cam
39 becomes active (fig. 3), the balance 68 moves the connecting rod 71 and lifts the sleeve 74 'by making it turn around' the axis 'of the wheel 63' on which it is pivoted (a analogous movement takes place for the arm 7). At the end of this movement the arms are in the position indicated by dotted lines in fig.l. In a third phase, the arms 7,8 are lowered without recoil: their downward movement is suitably braked by the shock absorbers 74.

   In a fourth phase we have the rotation of the shafts
54, 55 in a direction opposite to the previous one and starting from the arms move away returning to the starting position.

   At this moment, the cams 38 and 39 being inactive, comes into action the cam 37 which moves the fork 28 causing the actuation of the wheels 26,29 and the screw
30 rotating the table 3 by a quarter turn.

   The cycle of operations corresponding to one revolution of shaft 34 has been completed, which is then repeated a number of times.

   When the material to be mixed, for example as a result of its cooling, has become more viscous and presents a higher resistance, it is useful to continue the work at a lower speed by using the transmission of the torque of the wheels. 15,18 as it was said before.

   It has been said that the shovels 5, 6 are of different shape, the first having a sharp edge 9 at the bottom, the other a blunt edge 10. This fact gives rise to a dissimetric action on the material to be mixed and causes rotation. of said material on itself, which makes the action of the shovels more uniform.

   The machine which has just been described ensures rapid and complete processing in a very short time and it gives much better results than the known machines, vertical piston.

   CLAIMS
