Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to lacquers, which are particularly useful in the manufacture of insulated electric cables and wires; it also relates to insulated wires and cables comprising insulating or protective layers made up of such lacquers.
The lakes are based on synthetic resins obtained by reacting (with a polyisocyanate) a polyester comprising three or more hydroxyl groups which can react; this is the case, for example, of the resins sold by "Farbenindustrie Bayer" of Leverkusen, Germany,
 EMI1.1
under the name of Desmodur resins! Desmophen 0.

Although the coating compositions to which the invention relates are referred to herein, for convenience, as lacquers, because solutions of the resin-forming materials (polyester and polyisopyanate) on which they are based are referred to. by manufacturers under the name "lacquers", they are not true lacquers, since the ingredients in solution do not react to form the resin until a layer of the solution deposited on a base has been heated, whereas true lacquers are resin solutions from which films of the same resin are deposited simply by evaporation of the solvent.

The object of the invention is to improve the properties of these lacquers and, in particular, to make them better suited for use in the insulation and / or production of electric wires or cables.

According to the invention, lakes are mixed with a minimal proportion of a linear polyamide soluble in a volatile solvent (or which ion has modified to make it soluble in such a solvent) compatible with the solvent used in the manufacture of the lacquer 0 Lacquers containing 0.5% of a polyamide (based on the total weight of the active ingredients of the lacquer) exhibit improved properties. In general, the Applicant prefers not to use more than 30%, the best proportion being com-

Polyamides can be of the kind in which solubility is produced by irregularities in the repeating units of the chain, for example

example the one that was originally sold by I.t. Farbenindustrie under the trademark "Igamid" and called "Igamids 5A and 6A"; a compound

analogue is currently sold by Basische Anilin and Sodafabrik, of Ludwigshafen, Germany under the name "Ultracdd 1 Cil. Other suitable soluble polyamides are those known as alcohol-soluble t'Nylons" i for example the " Nylon "N-methoxy-methyl" sold by the Company "Imperial Chemioal Industries Ltd" under the names "Nylon CA" and "Nylon-

 N-meththol ".

In general, soluble "nylons" are those in which. Modifications of the polymer chain sufficiently reduce the hydrogen bonds between the chains to give them a property of solubility in polar solvents, including those which are made soluble by the addition of side chemical groups known to confer solubility and those which are soluble due to differences in chain lengths.

The improved lacquers according to the invention are prepared by mixing, with stirring, a solution of the ingredients for forming the polyester-polyisocyanate resin with a solution of the polyamide o For this purpose, the temperature is preferably brought to the polyester-polyisocyanate resin solution to a value between 60 and 70. Preferred solvents for the polyamide are mixtures of saturated aliphatic alcohols having 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the molecule, with 10 to 30% water.

Preferred solvents for the polyester-polyisocyanate resin forming ingredients are mixtures with - ... about two parts of one or more lower esters.
All the proportions and percentages referred to here are given in part in weight.
The lacquer solution is applied to the wires and cables by the usual coating techniques but, preferably, the temperature of the solution is not allowed to drop below 40 ° C since otherwise the temperature of the solution is not allowed to drop below 40 ° C. slow formation of a precipitate or gel may occur. If this formation does occur, the solution can generally be reformed by moderate heating. The.

surface to be coated or coated must be clean and free of paraffin or grease The coating is heated to harden the resin and to remove solvent (s), leaving a homogeneous mixture of polyamide and resin elastic.

A remarkable property of the improved lacquers according to the invention is their resistance to synthetic ester-based lubricants.

This, as well as the fact that they adhere well to natural or synthetic rubber makes them particularly suitable for application as a protective layer on cables having an outer surface of natural or synthetic rubber. or a material similar to rubber ,.

The lacquers can also be applied directly to the conductors to form a thin, adherent coating of the type commonly referred to as wire enamel, and can be used as an intermediate layer between layers of plastic forming the wire. insulation and / or protection of a conductor, in which case they act as a barrier to prevent migration of the plasticizer from one layer to another.

The invention is more fully illustrated by the following examples: EXAMPLE 1.

140 parts of a 70% diisocyanate-polyester lacquer (containing 100 parts solids) are mixed with 200 parts of ethyl acetate and 100 parts of methyl alcohol. To this hot solution is added a solution. 2 parts N-methoxy-methylated "nylon" in 30 parts water and 68 parts methyl alcohol, the mixed solutions being well stirred.
The resulting lacquer is applied by pulling a wire or cable through a bath of said lacquer and then curing the applied coating by passing through a drying oven of 1.80 m length maintained at 2800 at the rate. of about 1.5 m per minute.

A small diameter cable covered with neoprene and coated in this way has a lacquer coating of 0.005 to 0.0075 mm. It is observed that the diameter of a section of this cable, after having been immersed in a synthetic ester-based lubricant, at 100 ° C. for 7 days, has increased by 11 to 12%. Without the lacquer coating, it is found that the diameter of a cable of this type increases by 45 to 50% under the same conditions., It is noted that the diameter of another section of cable, which had been coated with 0.005 to 0.0075 mm unmodified isocyanate-polyester lacquer, increased by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

diameter of about 30% under the same conditions.

   With the incorporation of
4% "Nylon" in the lacquer and the application of a coating of 0.0075 to
0.01 mm, we obtain an increase in diameter of 8% only after the same period of immersion
The polyester-based lubricant used is that which is known under the name "EEL.3" and is a mixture of 40% of dinonium sebacate and 60% of the following compound:
Octyl. CO2.C8H16.CO2 (C2H4O) 3.C2H4.CO2.C8H16.CO2.Octyl
EXAMPLE II.

60, 140 parts of diisocyanate-polyester lake containing 100 parts of solids are mixed with 100 parts of ethyl acetate and 100 parts of methyl alcohol. Add to this solution while it is still at a temperature of 60, a solution at 60 ° C of 20 parts of N-methoxy-methylated "nylon" sold by the company "Imperial Chemical".
Industries Ltd ", under the name" Nylon CA / DV55 "in 120 parts of methyl alcohol and 60 parts of water, the solution mixture being well stirred; all or part of the water may be replaced by chloroform .

This solution is applied as a coating on bare copper wires and on wires insulated with rubber or synthetic rubber by pulling the wire through a bath of lacquer maintained at a temperature of 25 C and by curing the applied coating by passing it through a 1.8 m long drying oven maintained at 260 C at the rate of about 1.50 to 1.80 m per minute.

A small diameter neoprene cable coated in this way is wound around a mandrel the diameter of which is six times that of the cable, and it is immersed at 100 0 for 24 hours in the hydraulic fluid called "Skydrol" (manufactured by " Monsanto Limited "After this period of immersion, the swelling was less than 5%, while an uncoated and similarly treated neoprene cable swelled to such an extent that the insulation came off the wire.

  EXAMPLE III.

An electrical conductor is provided with a coating by extrusion of a plasticized composition of polyvinyl chloride. On this coating a coating was applied by the process of Example II, and on the lacquer coating was applied another layer of polyvinyl chloride compound having a higher plasticizer content.

The lacquer coating or coating is found to form an effective barrier to prevent migration of the plasticizer from the outer layer of polyvinyl chloride to the inner layer.
