 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 EMI7.3

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 Nonwoven fabric and method of mechanically treating this fabric.

   The present invention relates to non-woven fabrics! ses and particularly to a method for improving the drape of these fabrics.

   The type of nonwoven fabrics to which the present invention is particularly concerned include those which are made of one or more types of textile fibers welded together by added adhesive material or by self-adhesion between the fibers. In a process for forming these nonwoven fabrics, a preponderance of fibers are placed in the same direction and these fibers are then impregnated with an adhesive material in a small proportion.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 large relative to the fibers so as to bind these fibers into a cohesive material.

   By avoiding the need to first transform the fibers into yarns and then weave these yarns to obtain a fabric, it is possible to obtain nonwoven fabrics at a cost price which is only a fraction of that of classic woven fabrics.

   However, this method of manufacturing nonwoven fabrics is not without drawbacks. A major drawback, which the present invention particularly aims to remedy, is the lack of drape of the nonwoven fabrics obtained. Another object of the invention is to produce in these fabrics a drppé comparable to that of current fabrics of the "wash and wera" type without loss of tensile strength for a determined weight. Known methods for improving the drape of a nonwoven fabric reduce the amount of adhesive material used or reduce the adhesive ability of this material, but in both cases, result in greatly reduced mechanical strength of the fabric ultimately obtained.

   According to the present invention an entirely different point of view has been taken and the nonwoven fabric after it has been formed is subjected to further mechanical treatment to improve its drape. The nonwoven fabric is subjected to a compressive force applied parallel to its faces so as to compress the web longitudinally with respect to the fibers. After this treatment, the tablecloth has a much better drape.

   The actual change produced in the nonwoven fabric by this mechanical action is not established with precision, but it is known that in the course of usual fabric manufacturing processes different parts of the adhesive material solidify at different levels. moments and therefore there are in the final nonwoven fabric internal stress concentrations which prevent flexing of some of the fibers of the fabric, particularly in the transverse direction of the fabric. It is therefore believed that the mechanical treatment of tissues not

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 woven fabrics described, removes these concentrations of tensions
Internal in the same way as for example annealing removes internal stresses from metals and makes them more ductile.

   In order for the invention to be fully understood, it will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a schematic isometric view of an apparatus useful for mechanically treating a nonwoven fabric in a manner which according to the present invention greatly improves the drape of that fabric; and,
Fig. 2 is a representation of the shadows cast by three fabric samples which provide a measure for comparison of the drape of those samples and also provide a better understanding of the degree of improvement in drape due to the mechanical processing of the present invention.

   Fig. 1 shows an apparatus suitable for the mechanical treatment of a nonwoven fabric according to the invention. This apparatus comprises rollers 10, 11, 12, a driven roller 13, and a thick belt 15, the surface layer of which, preferably of rubber on a relatively inextensible solid backing of cord fabric, can contract.

   The rollers 10 and 13 can be moved away from or closer to each other so as to properly pinch the belt 15 in the pass between them as the belt goes from roll 10 to roll 13. As the belt passes from roll 10 to roll 13. roller 13, the outer surface of the rubber belt which is convex on roller 10 becomes concave on roller 13 and, therefore, becomes shorter against the smooth surface of roller 13.

   A nonwoven fabric P introduced between the belt and the roller 13 at the point where the shortening of the belt surface occurs is pressed into frictional contact with the contracting surface of the belt by the pressure applied perpendicularly in the pass such that the surface of the belt applies a compressive force to the fabric.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 , pressure which, according to the present invention, constitutes an effective means of releasing the fabric P from the internal stresses which have been created therein by the non-uniform solidification of the adhesive material connecting its fibers.

   It is understood that the nonwoven fabric P can be of the type formed by the carding process in which the fibers are oriented mainly in one direction and that these fibers can be introduced into the pass of the apparatus of FIG. 1 so that the direction of the fibers is in the direction of elongation or longitudinal direction of the belt 15. At the entry of the pass, the fabric P is only in light contact with the part 16 of the surface of the belt 15 which is at this time taut and convex, but after the belt has moved longitudinally and entered !. Born the fabric P in the pass N, the fabric is applied strongly by the pressure of the pass against this part 16 of the surface of the belt and adheres thereto by friction during the shortening or contraction of this part.

   The effect of shortening the portion 16 of the belt surface is to apply a compressive force longitudinal and parallel to the faces of the fabric P. Unlike calendering which would support the fabric at a force acting perpendicular to its sides. sides without producing a substantial improvement in drape, it has been found that the mechanical working of the nonwoven fabric P by a force acting parallel to its surfaces, as described above, improves the drape of the fabric to a great extent.

   Different tests using the apparatus of FIG. 1 were carried out on non-woven fabric samples, these samples being dry and slightly damp and the roll 13 being at room temperature and then at higher temperatures in order to determine the effect of these factors in the improved drape of these fabric samples.

   The results of these tests indicate that a significant improvement in drape occurs in

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 all fabric samples are dry, mechanically processed at room temperature and that further improvement can be achieved by slightly moistening the sample and performing the mechanical processing at elevated temperatures. Of course, the final destination of the fabric determines whether conditioning prior to the fabric and the heating of the roll 13 are justified to obtain maximum improvement in the drape of the fabric but it will be understood that the mechanical treatment of a subsequent nonwoven fabric,

   the invention will significantly improve the drape even if it does not make these adjustments to the mechanical process. In the table of these tests given below, the samples are all 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) wide strips having the same length and the drape ability of each sample is indicated by the height measurement. the largest mean of the loop that each strip is capable of forming before mechanical treatment and after mechanical treatment under the conditions of humidity and temperature indicated.

 EMI7.1
 We will now refer to Fig. 2, where the drape of two samples of a non-woven fabric, one before and one after

 mechanical treatment by the apparatus of the) '': t.g. 1, are compared to each other and also to the drape of a sample of "wash and wear" poplin woven in a Classic manner The two samples of non-woven fabric are taken from the same fabric made of carded viscose rayon fibers bonded with a water-based acrylic adhesive at 10% concentration.

   To evaluate the drape of these samples, a "drape meter" of the type described in
 EMI7.3
 the article titled "Mechantes of Elastic Performance of Textile Materialâ, Part 5" which appeared in the August 1950 issue of the Textile Hesearch Journal on page 539. The drape, mëteë eh question (not shown) includes a mounted projector " about 8 feet (240 m) above a vertical spindle * A 10 inch (250mm) diameter fabric sample is placed on a 4 inch (100mm) diameter disc on the spindle and the spindle is then raised approximately 3 inches (75 mm) towards the projector In Fig 2, the shadow pattern cast by each sample is indicated and this figure provides a basis for comparison of the drape of each of the samples.

   More particularly, plot 20 represents the edge of the shadow cast by the sample of nonwoven fabric which has not

   A favorable improvement in the drape of non-woven fabrics which, as has been found, results from the mechanical treatment of these materials by a compressive force acting parallel to their surfaces, has been observed in materials exhibiting high density. other fiber and adhesive compositions and therefore the improvement is believed to be independent of these factors.

   More particularly, the nonwoven fabrics containing the following fibers all exhibited better drape after mechanical processing; rayon viscose 100 ,,, (samples 1, 2, 3 and 4): cotton fibers 60% and rayon 40% (sample 5); 50% viscose rayon and 50% acetate fibers (samples 10 and 11); 80% viscose rayon, 14% cotton and 6% cellulose fibers (sample 12); and 100% polyester fibers identified by the Dacron brand of Du Pont De Nemours (sample 13).

   In addition to the drape, a remarkable improvement in tensile strength was observed in some of the non-woven fabrics studied, after mechanical treatment according to the invention, the particular non-woven material which exhibited the most marked improvement is constituted. viscose rayon fibers bonded with a water-based acrylic adhesive at a concentration of 10%.

   Tests on two commercial forms of this material all show an improvement in tensile strength per pound (453 g), as shown in the table below:

 However, since the characteristic of the nonwoven materials studied which underwent the most marked improvement is drape, it is this improvement which is featured in the following claims, although without the scope of the invention. these are limited to it.
