 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

  He Synchronization device "
The present invention relates to a synchronization device intended for the field of cinematography.

  Currently, we frequently synchronize manually by spreading part of the image film, by superimposing on the last image of a given scene a selected portion of a soundtrack and by causing the soundtrack to be superimposed on the previous images of the film. scene until the beginning of it in order to determine the beginning of the useful piece of the soundtrack.

  It is difficult to perform these operations with the required accuracy and they cause great loss of time. Some devices have already been proposed to facilitate the operations.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 synchronization functions, but these are bulky and complex and therefore expensive and, moreover, they are permanently mounted on specific devices, which limits their use to films of great length.

   The object of the present invention is to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks. For this purpose, the synchronization device is constituted by portable means making it possible to make a selected part of an image film coincide with the corresponding chosen part of a sound tape, such as a magnetic or optical tape and to print synchronously with the desired porti on of the image film and the soundtrack.

   According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the device comprises a clamp, one jaw of which carries a drum between the flanges of which can be placed superimposed, an image film and a soundtrack and of which the other jaw carries at least one. guide roller.

   According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the drum is slipped on a pivot integral with the jaw of the clamp.

   Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description given below without limitation of one embodiment of a synchronization device! nization according to the invention with reference to the drawing.

   The synchronization device according to the invention consists of a clamp 1, the jaw 2 of which carries a pivot 3 on which is threaded a drum 4 retained by means of a nut 5. The second jaw, 6, of the clamp 1 is avoided. - Designed so as to have two projections 7 joined by at least one shaft 8 on which a roller 9 rotates freely.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The drum 4 has two flanges 10 between which there remains a space substantially equal to the width of the image film and of the soundtrack 4 to be synchronized. The central portion 11 of the drum has a diameter smaller than that of the end portions 12, 13 which constitute bearing flanges. The flange 12 has at its center a circular row of teeth 13 '. It is a drum frequently used in cinematographic material.

   The central portion 14 of the roller 9 also has a diameter smaller than that of the end portions 15, 16 which also constitute bearing flanges. The rim 15 has a groove 17 for the passage of the teeth 13 ′ of the drum 4.

   The operation of the device emerges from the following description which relates to a mode of use cited by way of example.

   After having located on the image film the first and the last image of a scene to which a determined sound or set of sounds must correspond, part of the film 18 is placed, which corresponds to the final image on the drum by threading it over the teeth 13 'and the terminal part 19 of the chosen piece of soundtrack is superimposed on the final image marked by also threading it over the teeth 13'. The clamp is then closed so that the image film and the soundtrack are held together, along their edges between the edges 15, 11 and 16,13 of the roller and the drum; the film and the soundtrack are then pulled by the parts which follow the final image of the scene; this pull causes a rotation of the drum 4 and of the roller 9 as well as a synchronized movement without relative displacement image film and soundtrack.

   The editor continues this operation until

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 that at the moment when the image corresponding to the beginning of the considered scene appears, after which it cuts the soundtrack to the right of the image and can then assemble the piece of tape which has been superimposed on the end of the tape resulting from the previous operations. It should be noted that the image film as well as the soundtrack are in contact with a solid surface only along their edges, so that they do not risk any damage in their central zone which carries the images and the sound.

   It is understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and that many variations can be made to it without departing from the scope of the present patent.

   It is thus in particular that the drum can be interchangeable, so that the device is suitable for films of different widths; in this case, the roller will also be, spacers being able to be placed between the projections 7 and the edges of the roller.
