Description
Process for the preparation of a mixture of higher molecular weight aliphatic sulphides. It has already become known to react mereapatans with halogen-containing aliphatic compounds, one component also already being substituted by carboxyl groups. So far, however, it has always been a question of lower aliphatic or mixed aromatic-aliphatic compounds that were of no technical importance.
It has now been found that a mixture of technically valuable sulfides of higher organic compounds that have soap character can be obtained if a mixture of higher alkyl halides, which corresponds to the alcohol mixture obtainable by reducing naturally occurring fats and oils, is mixed with the sodium salt of Mereaptoacetic acid converts.
The new mixture of sodium salts of higher alkylmereaptoacetic acids) has soap-like and emulsifying properties. It can be used, among other things, as an auxiliary in the textile industry and as a soap substitute. Example: 16 parts by weight of caustic soda are dissolved in 300 parts by weight of alcohol, and 18.4 parts by weight of mereaptoacetic acid are gradually added.
Then 47 parts by weight of a mixture of higher alkyl chlorides, which correspond to the alcohols obtainable by reducing the coconut oil fatty acids, are added. The mixture is refluxed on a water bath for 4 hours. After the reaction has ended, it is filtered hot. On cooling, the mixture of sodium salts of the higher alkyl mereaptoacetic acids crystallizes out as a white crystal mass.
The new product is clearly soluble in water; the aqueous solutions show good foaming power. It can be used as a soap substitute.
