Device for forming the explosive mixture for internal combustion engines. In known mixers where conjugate valves or butterflies are used to adjust the air and gas passage sections, these valves or butterflies are arranged in ducts of different sections and are initially adjusted, taking into account the gas quality, by an angular offset of one relative to the other. As a result, in each duct the depression is modified differently by the same angular displacement of the two butterflies, which makes it necessary to make corrections by hand while running.
The present invention relates to a positive device for forming the explosive mixture from air and a fuel consisting at least in part of a gas, for internal combustion engines, a device which overcomes the aforementioned drawback. and comprising, for carburizing, a diffuser in the form of a Venturi and with a variable rectangular section by transverse displacement of at least one of its sides, which simultaneously masks or unmasks, in variable number according to the size of its displacement, orifices blocking transversely in this Venturi and bringing in some of the components of the mixture,
while the other part of the components is brought into the Venturi by a pipe opening longitudinally into it.
A constant composition of the explosive mixture is thus automatically obtained regardless of the variations in speed or load of the engine.
The orifices opening into the diffuser are preferably all or in groups in communication with at least one supply manifold containing a rotary distributor arranged to vary the passage section in this manifold and thus allow qualitative adjustment.
The apparatus may have, in addition to the rotary distributor or distributors for the qualitative adjustment of the mixture, at least one other rotary distributor designed to be able to be put into communication with another source of fuel, a rich gas for example or else a liquid fuel, and thus allow an enrichment of the mixture either for starting or for peaks of power.
The device may further comprise a control member, preferably a rotary key, cooperating both with an idling duct and with the enrichment distributor.
i By way of example, there is shown in the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the positive device according to the invention as well as variants of this embodiment.
In this drawing: fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the device by the axis of the diffuser.
fig. 2 two half-sections along lines II-IIa and II IIb of FIG. 1, FIG. 3 a section along line III-III of FIG. 1, FIG. 4 a section along the line IV-IV of FIG. 1, FIG. 5 a plan section of the apparatus and FIG. 6 a section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the diffuser of an alternative embodiment.
The apparatus shown comprises a body 1 in the general shape of an inverted U, the internal faces of which on three sides are shaped so as to constitute the three sides of a Ven turi with a rectangular cross section, the long sides of which are formed by the legs of 1'U. Side covers 3 and 4 are placed on the opposite ends of this body, each of which comprises a pipe 5, 6 which plugs into this Venturi and is arranged coaxially. These tubings are ovalized to match the rectangular section of the Venturi.
The assembly is held assembled by an outer assembly plate 7 fixed by screws 8 on the back of the body 1 and the covers 3 and 4, and by a cover 9 pressed on the end of the U opposite the bottom to close the latter and also attached to these side covers.
The fourth side of the Venturi is constituted by the bottom of a movable shoe 10 sliding in the body 1 transversely to the bottom of the U and between the covers 3 and 4; the sides of this shoe which move along the long sides of the Ven turi follow the shape of the latter and the joint is ensured by two pads 12 embedded in the housings of this shoe 10 in the region of the Venturi neck and respectively applied against these long sides by means 13.
The other sides of the shoe 10 are flat and in contact with guide rollers 17 housed in transverse cells 18 of the covers 3 and 4 of the body 1; these are here two in number located one on each side of the hoof, but there could be several on each side; in each of these cells, at least on one side of the shoe, open holes 19 transverse to the axis of the cell and each containing a slight spring 20 and a grain 21 applied by this spring against the roller 17 housed in the 'al véole and whose diameter is slightly smaller than that of the latter, grain 21 and spring 20 being held in place by a threaded plug 22 which seals off the external outlet of the hole 19.
The guide roller 17 is thus elastically pressed on the shoe and the sliding of the latter is greatly facilitated. These cells are sealed at the end by threaded plugs? 3. This shoe 10 is hollow and carries to. the interior two transverse axes 24 on one of which is mounted a chette oven 25 articulated at the end of a crank 26 wedged on an axis 27 journaling in the bearing surfaces 28 of the body 1 and projecting outside. On this projecting part is wedged a lever? 9 connected by a connecting rod 30 to another lever 31 wedged on a shaft 32 journaled in an external boss 33 of the cover 9 of the body 1 and of the axis located in the longitudinal plane of the apparatus.
A control lever 34 is wedged on this shaft 32 and actuated remotely by means not shown terminating at the. accelerator pedal or the like of a vehicle.
The wall of the long sides of the Venturi is pierced in the region of the neck with two opposite rows of holes 36 which respectively communicate the interior of this Venturi with two cylindrical side chambers 37 formed in the body 1 and in communication with the air. exterior through metal screens forming filters.
In each of these chambers 37 is housed a rotary distributor 38 consisting of a cylindrical body fitted in the chamber and in which are cut, facing the holes 36, eccentric cylindrical grooves 39 separated from each other by shoulders 40 of which each is cut. cun joined with the wall of the chamber between two successive holes 36.
By rotating each distributor 38 inside its chamber, the passage section is consequently made to vary towards the holes 36 and, for this purpose, each distributor 38 extends outside the body 1 and through the plate 7 by a pin 40 on which is fixed an operating lever 41. These two levers 41 are here coupled by a bar 42 and thus actuated simultaneously by the same cable control 43 coupled to one of the them. In the inlet pipe 5 for the inlet to the Venturi crosswise, another pipe 45 intended to be connected to the starting vacuum cleaner and on which is mounted an all-or-nothing shutter 46.
This shutter is immobilized in its two positions, namely: tight closing and full opening, by the same res out 47, and on its axis 48 is wedged a lever 49 which is operated remotely, for example by cable.
Opposite the last of the holes 36 still unmasked when the section of the Venturi is reduced to its minimum is placed a key 50 arranged to more or less mask this hole and thus adjust the idle speed. Here, this key 50 is rotatable and its shank protrudes outside through the assembly plate 7 in which it can turn, the protruding part pbrtant an operating lever 51 actuated remotely, for example by a cable 52.
Preferably, the tubing 5 leading to the converging point of the Venturi is connected to the gas supply duct, the air being admitted directly into the Venturi through the holes 36, but it is also possible to make a pinvèrse, that is to say. say bring the gas through these holes 36 and bring the air through this tubing 5. In the first case, it is advantageous to add to the device in the tubing 5 a small scraper 53 constituted for example by a blade flexible pressing very slightly on the face of the shoe 10 exposed to the gas stream, in order to prevent any possible deposit on this face of dust or residues conveyed by the gas.
This device can moreover also be used when it is the air which arrives by the pipe 5.
In all cases, it is clear that the displacement of the movable shoe 10 simultaneously varies the number of holes discharging into the Venturi and the section of the latter; This ensures the quantitative adjustment without disturbing the quantitative composition of the gas mixture leaving the device, then the flow of air and gas are under the effect of the same depression which is that prevailing at the neck of the Venturi. The qualitative adjustment is ensured by the rotary distributors 38.
There is shown in phantom in FIG. 3 an alternative embodiment in which the chamber 37 of one of the distributors 38 is not in communication with the air, but is connected by a pipe 54 to a source of rich fuel, acetylene for example. In this case, the chamber of the other distributor which feeds the hole 36 cooperating with the key 50 to ensure the idling is in communication - by a channel not shown with this chamber 37 for the rich gas inlet in order to allow starting and idling on rich gas for the time necessary for the generator to warm up.
We could also, for the same purpose, set the key 50 so that it cooperates both with two holes 36 supplied one by one of the distributors and the second by the other, while the section of the Venturi is minimum. . On the other hand, the distributor supplied with rich gas could supply only a few holes 36 which become unmasked only when the section of the Venturi approaches its maximum, that is to say for operation at full load. In the variant embodiment shown in FIG. 6, one of the distributors is established to be supplied with liquid fuel.
For this purpose, the distributor 38a comprises an axial borehole 57 in communication with the outside air by an orifice adjustable by a screw, while radial holes 58 opening into each groove 39 put this borehole in communication with the chamber 37a in which delivers a constant level tank 59 fixed to the external orifice of this chamber. This part of the device then operates as a carburetor identical to that described in French patent No. 812641 of January 17, 1936.
It will be noted that the apparatus shown in fi-. 1 can be easily and quickly transformed into any one of the two variants which have just been described, the elements to be changed for this being interchangeable.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the details of embodiment shown or described, which have been given only by way of examples. Thus, in particular, two opposite sides of the Venturi could be mobile simultaneously.
