einige Verbesserungen für die praktische Verarbeitbarkeit vorhanden sind. Die Verbesserung der Schlagfestigkeit ist nicht genügend, sogar wenn das Polyphenylenoxidharz mit den Polystyrolharz gemischt wird.
5 Eine weitere Verbesserung besteht darin, dass Polystyrolharz, welches mit Butadienkautschuk oder EPDM-Kautschuk modifiziert ist, verwendet wird oder dass ein thermoplastisches Styrolel-astomer verwendet wird, um die Schlagfestigkeit zu erhöhen. Diese Verbesserung war jedoch im Hinblick auf die Verformbar-10 keit nicht befriedigend, da, obschon die chemische Resistenz ebenfalls erhöht wurde, die Zunahme der Schmelzviskosität so gross ist, dass die Verarbeitbarkeit zum Formen und die Erscheinungsform der geformten Artikel ungünstig beeinflusst wurden. Eine weitere Verbesserung zur Reduktion der Schmelzviskosi-15 tät einer Polyphenylenoxidzusammensetzung und ebenso zur Verbesserung des Schmelzflusses und der Verarbeitbarkeit besteht darin, dass die Zusammensetzung mit fremden, hoch-molekularen Harzen gemischt wird. Diese Verbesserung ist jedoch nicht befriedigend, da einerseits die Verträglichkeit der fremden, hoch-20 molekularen Harze im allgemeinen so klein ist, dass nachteilige Schwierigkeiten auftreten, z.B. leichtes Abschälen des Harzes bei der Formung, nachteilige Erscheinung der geformten Artikel und eine grosse Verminderung der mechanischen Eigenschaften.
Unter der obigen Situation ist es wichtig, ein hoch-molekula-25 res Harz auszuwählen, welches keine der obengenannten nachteiligen Einflüsse auf die Polyphenylenoxidharzzusammensetzung ausübt, wenn es damit gemischt wird. Es besteht schon seit langem ein Bedürfnis nach der Entwicklung eines solchen Harzes. Die vorliegende Erfindung beabsichtigt die Verbesserung der 30 Verarbeitbarkeit und der Schlagfestigkeit von Polyphenylenoxid-harzzusammensetzungen. Diesen Schwierigkeiten wurde begegnet, indem Ethylencopolymer mit einer spezifischen Struktur wasserstoffrest oder ein substituierter Kohlenwasserstoffrest sind,
aufweisen.
BESCHREIBUNG
Die vorliegende Erfindung bezieht sich auf eine neue thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung, welche zur Herstellung von Formkörpern durch Spritzgiessen, Strangpressen oder dergleichen, verwendet werden kann.
Die erfindungsgemässe, thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzimg, welche ein ausgewogenes Verhältnis von physikalischen Eigenschaften und der Erscheinungsform besitzt, enthält
A) Polyphenylenoxidharz, das gegebenenfalls mit Styrolpoly-meren oder anderen Polymeren gepfropft ist und
B) ein Ethylencopolymer auf Basis von 50-90 Gew.-% Ethy-len, 5-49 Gew.-% eines Alkylesters einer a,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure und 0,5-10 Gew.-% Maleinsäureanhydrid, welches Ethylencopolymer gegebenenfalls andere Vinylcomonomere umfasst.
Im allgemeinen ist Polyphenylenoxidharz ein thermoplastisches Harz, welches verschiedene ausgezeichnete Eigenschaften aufweist, wie mechanische Eigenschaften, elektrische Eigenschaften, chemische "Widerstandsfähigkeit, Wärmebeständigkeit, Wasserbeständigkeit, Flammfestigkeit und dimensionale Stabilität. Das Harz weist jedoch Unzulänglichkeiten auf, z.B. dass die Schmelzviskosität so hoch ist, dass die Verarbeitbarkeit nicht gut ist und überdies ist die Schlagfestigkeit verhältnismässig klein.
Einer der bekannten Versuche zur Reduktion der Schmelzviskosität, um eine verbesserte Verarbeitbarkeit zu erzielen, ohne jedoch eine nachteilige Wirkung auf die ausgezeichneten Eigenschaften des Polyphenylenharzes zu haben, besteht in der Mischung des Polyphenylenoxidharzes mit Polystyrolharz, was jedoch dazu fuhrt, dass die Wärmebeständigkeit, die Flammfestigkeit, die chemische Resistenz und andere günstige Eigenschaften des Polypropylenharzes zu einer Verminderung neigen, obschon

L Thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie
A) Polyphenylenoxidharz, das gegebenenfalls mit Styrolpoly-meren oder anderen Polymeren gepfropft ist und
B) ein Ethylencopolymer auf Basis von 50-90 Gew.-% Ethy-len, 5-49 Gew.-% eines Alkylesters einer a,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure und 0,5-10 Gew.-% Maleinsäureanhydrid, welches Ethylencopolymer gegebenenfalls andere Vinylcomonomere umfasst, enthält.
2. Thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung gemäss Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Komponente (A) als anderes Polymer mindestens eine andere hochmolekulare Verbindung enthält.
3. Thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung gemäss Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Komponente (A) als anderes Polymer rein aromatisches Alkenylharz und/oder ein gummiartiges Polymer enthält.
4. Thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung gemäss einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Polyphenylenoxidharz (A) ein Polymer ist, dessen sich wiederholende Phenylenoxideinheiten die Formel mit den Substituenten R1, R2, R3, R4, worin R1, R2, R3 und R4 unabhängig voneinander Wasserstoff, Halogen, ein Kohlen-
zugefugt wurde, wobei das Problem gelöst wurde, ohne das andere vorhandene günstige Eigenschaften, wie Hitzebeständig-35 keit, Härte usw. in nachteiliger Weise beeinflusst wurden.
Es ist Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung, eine thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung zur Verfugung zu stellen, welche Polyphenylenoxidharz enthält, wobei es überlegen ist, in den Eigenschaften der Verarbeitbarkeit und der Schlagfestigkeit, 40 ebenso wie der Wärmebeständigkeit, der chemischen Resistenz und der Härte.
Nach umfangreichen Forschungsarbeiten mit hoch-molekularen Harzen zur Beeinflussung der Eigenschaften von Polypheny-lenoxid in der obengenannten Art wude mit Ethylencopolymer 45 mit einer spezifischen Struktur ien Zusatzstoff gefunden, welcher in der Lage ist, einen guten Ausgleich der Eigenschaften Schlagfestigkeit, Wärmebeständigkeit und Härte zu bewirken und die Verarbeitbarkeit und Erscheinungsform der geformten Artikel in überlegener Weise zu beeinflussen. Die vorliegende Erfindung ist 50 auf diesen Erkenntnissen begründet.
Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist demzufolge die im Patentanspruch 1 definierte thermoplastische Harzzusammensetzung. Das Polyphenylenoxidharz (A) in der vorliegenden Erfindung ist bevorzugt ein Polymer oder Copolymer folgender 55 Formel mit den Substituenten R1, R2, R3, R4
worin R1, R2, R3 und R4 unabhängig voneinander ein Wasser-65 stoffatom, Halogen, einen Kohlenwasserstoffrest oder einen substituierten Kohlenwasserstoffrest bedeuten.
Es wird vorzugsweise durch Oxidationspolymerisierung eines oder zwei oder mehrerer Phenolverbindungen der formel

worin R1, R2, R3, R4 und R5 unabhängig voneinander ausgewählt sind von Wasserstoff, Halogen, Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe und einer substituierten Kohlenwasserstoffgruppe und mindestens einer der Reste Wasserstoff ist, mit molekularem Sauerstoff oder einem Gas, welches solchen enthält, in Gegenwart eines Oxida-tions-Polykondensations-Katalysators erhalten.
Beispiele von R1, R2, R3, R4 und R5 in der obigen Formel sind Wasserstoff, Chlor, Brom, Huor, Jod, Methyl, Ethyl, n- oder Iso-propyl, primäres, sekundäres oder tertiäres Bulyl, Chlorethyl, Hydroxyethyl, Phenylethyl, Benzyl, Hydroxymethyl, Carboxy-ethyl, Methoxycarbonylethyl, Çyanoethyl, Phenyl, Chlorphenyl, Methylphenyl, Dimethylphenyl, Ethylphenyl und Allyl.
Beispiele von Verbindungen der obigen Formel sind Phenol, o-, m- oder p-Kresol, 2,6-, 2,5- 2,4- oder 3,5-Dimethylphenol,
2-Methyl-6-phenylphenoI, 2,6-DiphenylphenoI, 2,6-Diethylphe-nol, 2-Methyl-6-ethylphenol, 2,3,5-, 2,3,6- oder 2,4,6-Dimethyl-phenol, 3-Methyl-6-t-butylphenol, Thimol und 2-Methyl-6-allyl-phenol. Im weiteren kann die Verbindung der obigen Formel mit anderen Phenolen als diejenigen der obigen Formel copolymeri-siert sein, z.B. mit polyvalenten, aromatischen Hydroxyverbin-dungen, wie bis-Phenol A, Tetrabrombisphenol A, Resorcin, Hydrochinon und Novolakharz.
Bevorzugte Polymer sind Homopolymere von 2,6-Dimethyl-phenol oder 2,6-Diphenylphenol und Copolymere eines grossen Anteils von 2,6 Xylenol und eines kleinen Anteils von
3-Methyl-6-t-butylphenol oder 2,3,6-Trimethylphenol.
Es kann irgendein Oxidations-Polykondensations-Katalysator für die Oxidationspolymerisation von Phenolverbindungen verwendet werden, so lang er die Polymerisationsfähigkeit besitzt. Beispielsweise können als Katalysatoren erwähnt werden: Kupfersalze und tertiäre Amine, wie Kupferchlorid, Triethylamin und Kupferchlorid-pyridin; ein Katalysator aus Kupfersalzen-amino-alkalimetallhydroxiden, wie Kupferchlorid-pyridin-kaliumhydro-xid; ein Katalysator aus Mangansalzen und primären Aminen, wie Manganchlorid-ethanolamin und Manganacetat-ethylendi-amin; ein Katalysator aus Mangansalzen und Alkoholaten oder Phenolaten, wie Manganchlorid-natriummethylat und Mangan-chlorid-natriumphenolat; ein Kombinationskatalysator von Kobaltsalzen und tertiären Aminen.
Weiter umfassen die Polyphenylenoxidharze in der vorliegenden Erfindung Polyphenylenoxide, welche mit Styrolpolymeren oder anderen Polymeren gepfropft sind. Die Harze werden hergestellt durch organische Peroxid-Propfpolymerisation von Styrol-monomeren und/oder anderen polymerisierbaren Monomeren in Gegenwart von Polyphenylenoxid (JP-A-47862/1972, 12197/1973, 5623/1974, 38596/1977, 30991/1977 usw.) oder durch Schmelzkneten des Polyphenyloxides von Polystyrol und einem radikalen Initiator (JP-A-142799/1977).
Eine Harzzusammensetzung (A) besteht aus dem Polyphenylenoxid und einem oder mehreren der anderen hoch-molekularen Verbindungen. Die hoch-molekulare Verbindung umfasst Polyol-efine, wie Polyethylen, Polypropylen, Ethylenpropylen-Blockco-polymer, Polymethylpentan, Ethylen-olefin-copolymer; Homopo-lymer oder Copolymer, wie Polyvinylchlorid, Polymethylmetha-crylat, Polyvinylacetat, Polyvinylpyridin, Polyvinylcarbazol, Polyacrylamid, Polyaciylonitril, Ethylen-vinylacetat-copolymer und aromatisches Alkenylharz; Polycarbonat; Polysulfon; Polyethylen-terephthalat; Polybutylen-terephthlat; Polyallylenester (z.B.
«U-Polymer», hergestellt durch Yunichika K.K.); Polyphenylen-sulfid; Polyamid, wie 6-Nylon, 6,6-Nylon und 12-Nylon; kondensierte hoch-molekulare Verbindungen, wie Polyacetal; und gummiartige Polymere. Weiter zu erwähnen sind verschiedene wärme-5 härtbare Harze, wie Silikonharz, Fluorinharz, Polyimido, Polya-midoimido, Phenolharz, Alkydharz, ungesättigtes Polyesterharz, Epoxyharz und «Dapon»harz. Das Mischverhältnis von Polyphenylenoxid und anderen hoch-molekularen Verbindungen kann in weitem Bereich ausgewählt werden aus dem Bereich von bei-io spielsweise 1-99 Gew.-% Polyphenylenoxid und 99-1 Gew.-% der anderen hoch-molekularen Verbindungen. Das optimale Verhältnis hängt vom Gegenstand und von der Verwendung der Mischung ab.
Es ist für den Fachmann leicht, das optimale Verhältnis aus-i5 zuwählen.
Vorzugsweise ist die andere hoch-molekulare Verbindung Polyolefin, aromatisches Alkenylharz, modifiziertes Gummiaromatisches Alkenylharz und gummiartiges Polymer.
Die bevorzugteste hoch-molekulare Verbindung ist das aro-20 matische Alkenylharz, das modifizierte gummi-aromatische Alkenylharz und das gummiartige Polymer.
Das aromatische Alkenylharz, welches erfindungsgemäss verwendet wird, wird ausgewählt aus der Gruppe, welche mindestens 25 Gew.-% einer Polymereinheit enthält, welche aus dem Mono-25 mer der folgenden Formel abgeleitet ist:

Beispiele des aromatischen Alkenylharzes sind Homopolymere, wie Polystyrol, Polychlorstyrol und Poly-a-Methylstyrol, Copolymere von solchen Polymeren und styrolhaltige Copoly-40 mere, wie Styról-aciylonitrilcopolymer, Styrol-divinylbenzolcopo-lymer und Styrol-acrylonitril-a-methylstyrolcopolymer. Bevorzugt werden Homopolystyrol, Styrol-methylstyrolcopolymer, Styrol-aciylonitrolcopolymer, Styrol-chlorstyrolcopolymer und Styrol-methylmethaciylatcopolymer. Am bevorzugtesten ist das Homo-45 polystyrol.
Das modifizierte gummi-aromatische Alkenylharz ist ein zwei-phasiges, worin Gummipartikel in der aromatischen Alkenylharz-matrix dispergiert sind. Das Verfahren zu ihrer Herstellung besteht in einem mechanischen Rühren von Gummi und aromati-50 schem Alkenylharz, wie nachstehend beschrieben, oder in einer Auflösung von Gummi in aromatischem Alkenylmonomer und anschliessender Polymerisation des aromatischen Alkenylharzes. Das letztgenannte Verfahren wird kommerziell für die Herstellung von hochfesten Polystyrolen verwendet.
55 Das modifizierte Gummi-Alkenylharz umfasst im weiteren eine Mischung von Polystyrol, erhalten durch das letztgenannte Verfahren mit Gummi und/oder aromatischem Alkenylharz.
Gunimi und gummiartige Polymere umfassen natürliche oder künstliche Polymere, welche bei Zimmertemperatur, beispiels-60 weise 20-25 °C elastisch sind. Beispiele sind natürlicher Gummi; Dien-Gummi, z.B. Polybutadien, Polyisopren und Polychlorpro-pen; Copolymer von Dien und Vinylmonomer, z.B. Styrolbuta-dien-Randon-copolymer, Styrol-butadien-Blockcopolymer, Sty-rol-butadien-styrol-Blockcopolymer, Styrol-Propfpolybutadien, 65 Butadien-aciylonitrilcopolymer; Polyisobutylen, Isobutylen-buta-dien oder -isoprencopolymer, Ethylenpropylencopolymer, Ethy-len-propylen-diencopolymer, «Thiokol»-Gummi, Polysulfid-Gummi, Acryl-Gummi, Polyurethan-Gummi, Polyether-Gummi

und Epichlorhydrin-Gummi. Im weiteren umfasst verschiedene modifizierte Arten von den obengenannten Gummisorten, z.B. Hydroxy- oder Carboxy-terminalmodifiziertes Polybutadien, insbesondere hydrogeniertes Styrol-butadien-styrol-Blockcopolymer. Dien-Gummi und Dien-Vinyl-Verbindungs-Copolymer, worin die Mikrostruktur der Doppelbindungen variiert ist, z.B. die Vinyl-gruppe, die cis-l,4-Bindung und die trans-1,4-Bindung, werden ebenfalls als Gummi oder gummiartiges Polymer in der vorliegenden Erfindung verwendet.
Vorzugsweise ist der Gummi und das gummiartige Polymer ein Copolymer von Butadien (40-100 Gew.-Teile) und Styrol (60-0 Gew.-Teile), Copolymer von Butadien (65-82 Gew.-Teile) und Aaylonitril (35-18 Gew.-Teile), Styrolbutadien oder Styrol-butadien-slyrol-Blockcopolymer, einschliesslich lineares Blockco-polymer, radiales Blockcopolymer und andere ähnliche Blockco-polymere. Styrol-gepfropftes Polybutadien, hergestellt durch Zugabe von Styrol zu Polybutadienlatex oder Butadienstyrolcopoly-merlatex und Emulsions-Polymerisation in Gegenwart eines radikalen Initiators, Ethylen-propylencopolymer und Ethylen-propy-len-diencopolymer.
Das Polyphenylenoxid und das aromatische Alkenylharz und/oder das modifizierte Gummi-Alkenyl aromatische Harz können in jedem Verhältnis gemischt werden. Der Polyphenylen-oxidgehalt beträgt vorzugsweise 5 Gew.-% oder mehr, besonders bevorzugt 20 Gew.-% oder mehr. Das Polyphenylenoxid und das gummiartige Polymer können ebenfalls in jedem Verhältnis gemischt werden, jedoch trägt der Gehalt an Polyphenylenoxid etwa 50 Gew.-% oder mehr, vorzugsweise 70 Gew.-% oder mehr, wenn es in Kunststoffen verwendet wird.
Die Ethylencopolymerhälfte (B) in der vorliegenden Erfindung enthält als Monomere Ethylen, Alkylester von a,ß-ungesät-tigten Carbonsäuren und Maleinanhydrid, wobei der Ethylenan-teil 50-90 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 60-85 Gew.-%, der Anteil an Alkylester der a,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure 5-49 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 7-45 Gew.-% beträgt und der Maleinsäureanhydridteil 0,5-10 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 1-8 Gew.-% beträgt.
Der Alkylester der cc,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure ist ein Alkylester einer C^-ungeättigten Carbonsäure, wie Aciylsäure und Methaciylsäure. Beispiele sind Methylaciylat, Ethylacrylat, n-Propylacrylat, Isopropylaaylat, n-Butylaciylat, t-Butylacrylat, Isobutylacrylat, Methylmethaaylat, Ethylmethaciylat, n-Propyl-methaciylat, Isopropylmethactylat, n-Butylmethacrylat, t-Butyl-methacrylat und Isobutylmethaciylat, vorzugsweise Ethylacrylat, n-Bulylaciylat und Methylmethciylat.
Es besteht keine Beschränkung des Mischungsverhältnisses der (A)- und (B)-Komponenten in der vorliegenden Erfindung und das Verhältnis wird aufgrund der Verwendung bestimmt. Die (B)-Komponente beispielsweise kann im Bereich von 0,5-99 Gew.-% variieren.
Vorzugsweise sollte das von den Gegenständen abhängige Mischungsverhältnis einer Zusammensetzung solcherart sein, dass z.B. eine Zusammensetzung, welche (A) Polyphenylenoxidharz oder Polyphenylenoxid/aromatisches Alkenylharz und (B) Ethy-len/Alkylester einer a,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure/Maleinanhy-dridcopolymer enthält 3-30 Gew.-%, besonders bevorzugt 5-20 Gew.-% der (B)-Komponente enthält, wenn die Zusammensetzung als Konstruktionskunststoff mit hoher Schlagzähigkeit verwendet wird.
Die obige Zusammensetzung hat eine unerwartet hohe Schlagfestigkeit und es entsteht keine Verminderung der Schlagfestigkeit, sogar wenn das Material bei hohen Temperaturen geformt wird.
Eine Zusammensetzung, welche (A) Polyphenylenoxidharz, ein aromatisches Alkenylharz und ein gummiartiges Polymer und (B) Ethylen/Alkylester einer a,ß-ungesättigten Carbonsäure/ Maleinharz enthält, sollte 0,5-20 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 1-10 Gew.-% der (B)-Komponente enthalten, obschon der Anteil je nach dem Anteil des gummiartigen Polymers in der (A)-Kompo-
nente variierbar ist, wenn die Zusammensetzung als Konstruktionskunststoff mit hoher Schlagfestigkeit verwendet wird. Es besteht keine merkliche Verbesserung der Schlagfestigkeit, sogar wenn der Anteil der (B)-Komponente in der obigen Zusammen-5 Setzung klein ist.
Eine Zusammensetzung, welche (A) Polyphenylenoxidharz oder Polyphenylenoxid/aromatisches Alkenylharz oder Polyphe-nylenoxid/aromatisches Alkenylharz oder Polyphenylenoxid/ aromatisches Alkenylharz/gummiartiges Polymer und (B) Ethy-io lencopolymer von Ethylen/Alkylester von a,ß-ungesättigter Car-bonsäure/Maleinanhydrid und anorganische Füllstoffe, wie Glasfiber, Kalziumcarbonat, Siliciumdioxid, Zinkoxid und li02 enthält, sollte 1-40 Gew.-%, vorzugsweise 5-30 Gew.-% der (B)-Komponente enthalten, auf Basis des gesamten Anteils der is Komponenten (A) und (B). Die mechanischen Eigenschaften, wie die Schlagfestigkeit werden vermindert, wenn keine Komponente (B) in der Zusammensetzung enthalten ist, die Gegenwart der Komponente (B) jedoch löst dieses Problem.
Die obenerwähnten Beispiele sind nur wenige Beispiele von 20 gewünschten Ausführungsformen der vorliegenden Erfindung, welche in einem weiten Bereich je nach den Gegenständen und Verwendungen der Zusammensetzungen variiert werden können. Weiterkann das (B)-Komponentencopolymer in der vorliegenden Erfindung andere Vinyl-Comonomere enthalten. Beispiele sol-25 eher Vinyl-Comonomere sind Styrol, Vinylacetat, Vinylchlorid, a-Methylslyrol, Divinylbenzol, Tetrafluorethylen, Difluorethylen, Vinylidenchlorid, Aciylonitril und Aciylamid.
Es kann jedes Verfahren zur Herstellung der vorliegenden Zusammensetzung verwendet werden. Ein übliches Verfahren 30 wird übernommen. Ein Verfahren, welches vom ökonomischen Standpunkt bevorzugt wird, ist das Trockenmischen der Komponenten in einem Mischgerät, wie einem Henschel-Mischer und dann Schmelzkneten und Extrudieren der Mischung.
Es bestehen keine kritischen Begrenzungen bezüglich Tempe-35 ratur und Dauer der Durchfuhrung des Schmelzknetens. Die temperato liegt üblicherweise im Bereich von 150-350 °C und kann je nach dem Mischungsverhältnis variiert werden. Jeder Schmelzknetvorgang wird solange durchgeführt, wie die Viskoseschmelze behandelt werden kann, wobei es keine Rolle spielt, ob es batch-40 weise oder kontinuierlich durchgeführt wird. Apparate hierzu sind ein Banbeiy-Mischer, eine Rolle, ein Extruder und ein Kneter.
Es ist möglich, verstärkende Materialien, wie Glasfasern, Carbonfasern, anorganische oder organische Füllstoffe, wie Kohlenstoff, siliciumdioxid und HO2, Weichmacher, Stabilisatoren, 45 Flammhemmittel, Farbstoffe und Pigmente bei der Durchfuhrung der vorliegenden Erfindung zu verwenden. Einzelheiten sind bei den Verstärkungsmaterialien angegeben. Diese beeinflussen die Biegefestigkeit, die Biegungselastizität, die Zugfestigkeit, die Spannungselastizität und die Wärmedeformationstemperatur und 50 umfassen Aluminiumfasern, Carbonfasern, Glasfasern, hoch-elastische Polyamidfasern, hoch-elastische Polyesterfasern, Silicium-carbidfasern und litanat-Einkristallfedern.
Ein genügender Anteil von Verstärkungsmaterialien sollte mindestens eine Verstärkung bewirken, liegt jedoch üblicherweise 55 im Bereich von 5-100 Gew.-Teilen pro 100 Gew.-Teile der erfin-dungsgemässen Zusammensetzung.
Vorzugsweise ist das Verstärkungsmaterial Glas, besonders bevorzugt Glasfaserfilamente, hergestellt aus Borsilikatglas, aus Kalkstein mit verhältnismässig kleinem Anteil an Natrium/Alu-60 miniumgehalt. Das Material ist als «E»-Glas bekannt. Es können jedoch auch andere Glasarten, beispielsweise solche mit einem niederen Natriumgehalt, welche als «C»-Gläser belannt sind, verwendet werden, wenn die elektrischen Eigenschaften nicht von Belang sind. Die Filamente werden in üblicher Weise hergestellt, 65 wie durch Dampf- oder Luftblasen, Feuerblasen oder mechanischen Zug. Bevorzugte Filamente für die Verstärkung von Kunststoff werden durch mechanisches Ziehen hergestellt. Der Durchmesser der Filamente beträgt etwa 2-20 um, wobei jedoch die

Dicke für die vorliegende Erfindung nicht kritisch ist. Die Länge der Riamente ist ebenfalls nicht kritisch.
Zudem ist es nicht kritisch, ob die glasfilamente in Stränge gebündelt sind und dann die Stränge weiter unter Bildung eines Fadens oder eines Seils gebündelt sind oder zu einer Matte verwoben sind. Das Glasfilament wird jedoch vorzugsweise in etwa 0,3-3 cm lange Faserstücke geschnitten, welche vorzugsweise nicht länger als etwa 0,6 cm sind, wenn sie bei der Herstellung einer erfindungsgemässen Zusammensetzung verwendet werden.
Nachstehend soll das Flammhemmittel diskutiert werden. Ein nützliches Material für die vorliegende Erfindung umfasst eine Gruppe von Verbindungen, welche dem Fachmann bekannt sind.
Allgemein gesprochen, sind bevorzugte Verbindungen solche, welche die Elemente Brom, Chlor, Antimon, Phosphor und Stickstoff enthalten, welche feuerhemmend wirken. Beispielsweise sollen folgende Verbindungen erwähnt werden: halogenierte organische Verbindungen, Antimonoxid, Antimonoxid/halogenierte organische Verbindungen, Antimonoxid/phosphorhaltige Verbindungen, Phosphor allein oder Phosphorverbindungen, Phosphorverbindungen oder Verbindungen mit Phosphor-Stickstoffbindun-gen/halogenhaltige Verbindungen oder Mischungen solcher Verbindungen.
Der Anteil eines flammhemmenden Mittels ist nicht kritisch genügend ist jedoch eine solche Menge, welche eine Flammhem-mung bewirkt. Ein zu hoher Anteil ist nicht wünschenswert, da die physikalischen Eigenschaften beeinträchtigt werden, wie beispielsweise eine Senkung des Schmelzbereiches. Es ist für den Fachmann leicht, den zweckmässigen Anteil zu bestimmen. Flammhemmende Mittel werden üblicherweise in einem Anteil von 0,5-50 Gew.-Teilen, vorzugsweise 1-25 Gew.-Teile, besonders bevorzugt 3-15 Gew.-Teile pro 100 Gew.-Teile einer Mischung von Polyphenylenoxidharz und modifiziertem Gummi/ aromatischen Alkenylharz.
Eine nützliche halogenhaltige Verbindung ist:

Bevorzugte Halogenverbindungen in der vorliegenden Erfindung sind aromatische Halogenverbindungen, wie chloriertes Benzol, bromiertes Benzol, chloriertes Biphenyl, chloriertes Ter-45 phenyl, bromiertes Biphenyl und bromiertes Terphenyl; Verbindungen, welche zwei Phenylgruppen zusätzlich zu einer bivalenten Alkylengruppe besitzen und mindestens zwei Chlor- oder Bromatome pro Phenylgruppe aufweisen oder eine Mischung von mindestens zwei der obigen Verbindungen. Besonders bevorzugt 50 ist Hexabrombenzol und chloriertes Biphenyl oder Terphenyl mit oder ohne Antimonoxid.

Das Triphenylphosphat kann ebenfalls mit Antimonoxid verwendet werden.
Andere flammhemmende Mittel sind Verbindungen, welche Phosphor-Stickstofibindungen besitzen, wie Phosphornitritchlorid, Phosphoresteramid, das Amid der phosphorigen Säure, das Phosphinsäureamid, tris(Aziridinyl)phosphinoxid oderTetra-kis(oxymethyl)phosphoniumchlorid.
Die vorliegende Erfindung wird anhand der nachstehenden Beispiele erläutert.
Beispiele 1-2 und Vergleichsbeispiele 1-3
Polyphenylenoxid (fr)] = 0,55 in CHCI3,25 °C) erhalten durch Oxidations-Polykondensation von 2,6-Xylenol und Ethy-len/Ethylaciylat/Maleinanhydridcopolymer (65/30/5 Gew.-Teile, MI = 20 g/10 min) wurden in einer Laboplast-Mühle (hergestellt durch Toyo SeiH) einem Schmelzknetvorgang unterworfen, mit den Mengenanteilen, welche in Tabelle I angegeben sind. Die Zusammensetzungen (die Knettemperatur war etwa 270 °Q wurden formgepresst, wobei Teststücke für die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit und diejenigen für die Lastdeformationstemperatur hergestellt wurden. Die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit und die Last-deformationstemperatur wurde gemäss den Normen nach HS K 7110 bzw. K 7207 durchgeführt.
Zum Vergleich wurde Niederdruck-Polyethylen («Sumikasen» F101-1, hergestellt durch Sumitomo Chemical Company, Ltd.) anstelle von Ethylen/Ethylaciylat/Maleinanhydrid verwendet und die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit und die Ladungsdeformationstem-peratur wurde in ähnlicher Weise wie im Beispiel bestimmt.
Tabelle 1 zeigt die Resultate.
Wie aus Tabelle 1 ersichtlich, ist die Schlagzähigkeit der Zusammensetzungen aus Polyphenylenoxid und Polyethylen in den Vergleichsbeispielen nieder, jedoch diejenigen gemäss den erfindungsgemässen Zusammensetzungen aus Polyphenylenoxid und Ethylen/Ethylaaylat/Maleinanhydrid sehr hoch und es wurde keine Erniedrigung der Ladungsdeformationstemperatur beim letzteren festgestellt. Dies bestätigt die Tatsache, dass die Verträglichkeit mit Polyphenylenoxid für die vorliegende Zusammensetzung gut ist.

Beispiele 3-5 und Vergleichsbeispiel 4
Polyphenylenoxid wie es in Beispiel 1 verwendet wurde, Polystyrol mit hoher Schlagfestigkeit («Esblight» 500A, hergestellt 10 durch Nippon Polystyrene Co. Ltd.) und Ethylen/Ethylaciylat/ Maleinanhydridcopolymer, wie in Beispiel 1 verwendet, wurden in einer Laboplast-Mühle wie in Beispiel 1 einem Schmelzknetvorgang unterworfen und die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit wurde bestimmt.
15 Tabelle 2 zeigt das Zusammensetzungsverhältnis von entsprechenden Harzen und die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit.
Zum Vergleich wurde kein Ethylen/Ethylaciylat/Maleinanhy-dridcopolymer verwendet.
Tabelle 2 zeigt die Schlagfestigkeitserhöhung, welche durch 20 Einverleibung von kleinen Anteilen Ethylen/Ethylaciylat/ Maleinanhydridcopolymer in eine Zusammensetzung von Poly-phenylen und gummi-modifiziertes Polystyren beobachtet wurden.

Polyphenyloxid (90 Gew.-Teile), wie es in Beispiel 1 verwendet wurde und Ethylen/Alkylester von a,ß-ungesättigter Carbon-säure/MaleinsäureanhydridcopoIymer (10 Gew.-Teile) mit der in 30 Tabelle 3 angegebenen Zusammensetzung, wurde wie in Beispiel 1 einen Schmelzknetvorgang unterworfen und es wurde die Izod-Schlagfestigkeit und die Ladungsdeformationstemperatur gemessen. Tabelle 3 zeigt die Resultate.
Wie oben erklärt, zeigt die vorliegende thermoplastische 35 Harzzusammensetzung bemerkenswerte Wirkungen bezüglich von gut ausgewogenen Eigenschaften, von hergestellten formkör-pern, ebenso wie eine gute Verarbeitbarkeit.
Die neue erfindungsgemässe Harzzusammensetzung kann leicht zu Gegenständen geformt werden, indem übliche Formver-40 fahren eingesetzt werden, wie sie für thermoplastische Polypheny-lenoxidharze verwendet werden, wie Spritzgiessen, Strangpressen usw., um Artikel herzustellen, welche eine gute und einheitliche Erscheinungsform besitzen, ebenso wie wohl ausgewogene Eigenschaften bezüglich der Schlagfestigkeit, der Wärmeresistenz und 45 der Härte.
