EL PROCEDIMIENTO SIRVE PARA SELLAR DE FORMA PERMANENTE LA CAPA CUBIERTA MICROPOROSA Y, DE ESTE MODO, PROTEGER EL MATERIAL BASICO FRENTE A LA CORROSION Y EL DESGASTE. A TAL EFECTO, EN LOS POROS O CAPILARES DE LA CAPA CUBIERTA MICROPOROSA SE INTRODUCE ACIDO SILICICO EN FORMA DE UN LIOSOL DE ACIDO SILICICO, EN EL CUAL LAS PARTICULAS DE SIO SUB,2} DISTRIBUIDAS COLOIDALMENTE SON MENORES, AL MENOS EN UNA DIMENSION, QUE EL DIAMETRO DE LOS POROS O CAPILARES. A CONTINUACION, EL SOL DEPOSITADO DE ESTE MODO EN LOS POROS ES COAGULADO O SE HACE REACCIONAR CON LA CAPA CUBIERTA.
