Abstract
A process for the catalytic hydrogenation of a carbon-containing compound and its corresponding catalyst, which comprises obtaining a catalyst by treating the catalytic material having elemental nickel in a catalyst support with (a) sulfur or (b) an organic compound of sulfur or (c) sulfuric acid or (d) carbon sulfide or (e) mixture of two or more components selected from (a), (b), (c) and (d) said treatment being carried out under such conditions that a minor proportion of the nickel present in the catalyst material is thus combined with sulfur.
