【発明の詳細な説明】
マイクロ波調理用トレイ発明の背景
本発明は、電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用できる(ovenable)食品トレイ及び
電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用できる食品パッケージに関するものであり、よ
り具体的には、従来の又はマイクロ波のオーブンの中に、包装された食品と共に
、直接に置くことができる、食品トレイに関するものである。
冷凍ピザなどの包装された食品は、米国中及び世界中で広く販売されている。
これらの包装された食品は、食べ物をゼロから用意することに代わる、便利で、
時には安価な方法を消費者に提供する。包装された食品は、ますます電子レンジ
で使用できるようになりつつある。しかし、多くの場合、食品を電子レンジで加
熱するには、食品を食品パッケージから取り除いて、別の容器に入れなければな
らない。
この余分な工程を避けるために、電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用できる食品
パッケージが開発されてきた。例えば、冷凍ピザを含む箱からなるパッケージを
提供することは公知である。使用の際に、箱は開けられ、ピザと共に電子レンジ
に置かれ、マイクロ波のエネルギーを
受ける。
現在の電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用可能な食品パッケージに関連して、い
くつかの問題がある。電子レンジで使用可能な食品パッケージについては、パッ
ケージが電子レンジの床に置かれたままになっていると、熱シンクが作り出され
、これにより、食品の加熱が不均等になる。この不均等な加熱により、食品中に
「冷たい箇所」が生じる。更に、食品パッケージに用いられる耐熱性の厚紙材料
は、加熱により、堅さ(stiffness)及び剛性(rigidity)を失う傾向にある。これ
は、厚紙に含まれる水分が、マイクロ波の加熱により蒸発するためである。この
ように堅さが失われることにより、より一層の「熱シンク」が起こる可能性があ
り、更には、パッケージを電子レンジから取り除いた後、パッケージは食品を十
分に支えることができないため、食品をパッケージ中で運ぶことが困難になる。
従って、電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用可能な食品トレイ、及び電子レンジ
などのオーブンで使用可能な食品パッケージであって、電子レンジ又は従来のオ
ーブンに直接置くことができ、従来技術のパッケージが持つ問題を解消し、経済
的且つ容易に製造できるものが必要とされている。発明の要旨
本発明は、上記の要求を満たし、或いは上回るもので
ある。開口部を有する基部と、該開口部を覆う床部材とを含む食品トレイが提供
されている。床部材の一部分は、床部材がトレイ中の食品をほぼ直接に支えるよ
うに、基部に固定されている。トレイは、電子レンジ用に適合させることができ
る。従って、基部はプラスチックで作られ、床部材は厚紙で作られ、該厚紙は、
プラスチックコーティングを有し、更に、厚紙とプラスチックコーティングとの
間に感受体物質(susceptor material)を有している。床部材は、プラスチックコ
ーティングが食品と対面するように、そして、厚紙の外側表面は、トレイが食品
加熱装置の中に置かれるときに、該食品加熱装置の支持表面から一定間隔をあけ
るように配置されているのが望ましい。
上述のようなトレイを含む食品パッケージもまた記載されており、トレイの基
部からは、側壁が延びている。側壁は、段付きフランジで終わり、該フランジは
、側壁から大体垂直に外側へ延びる第１の部分及び第２の部分から大体垂直に延
びる第２の部分を含み、第２の部分は自由縁部で終わる。次に、パッケージには
蓋があり、その一部分は、側壁の段付きフランジの第１の部分に固定されて、食
品パッケージを形成する。図面の簡単な説明

トレイから取り外されて、トレイ上に再び置かれているのを示している。
図８は、図７を８−８線で切断した断面図である。詳細な説明
図１を参照すると、本発明の食品パッケージ(10)が示されている。食品パッケ
ージ(10)は、その中に冷凍ピザ(12)などの食品を収容できるように設計されてい
る。食品パッケージ(10)は、食品トレイ(14)からなり、該食品トレイ(14)は、大
きな丸い開口部(18)を有する基部(16)と、開口部(18)を覆うように構成され、配
置されている床部材(20)とからなる。後に分かるように、床部材(20)は、食品ト
レイ(14)中の食品(12)をほぼ直接に支える。蓋(21)は、パッケージ(10)中の食品
(12)を封じるために
設けられている。
次に、図２乃至図５を特に参照すると、食品トレイ(14)が更に詳しく記載され
ている。食品トレイ(14)は、大体長方形をしており、実際、図２乃至図５には、
正方形として示されている。食品トレイ(14)は、上述したように、大きな丸い開
口部(18)を形成する基部(16)と、開口部(18)を覆うように構成され、配置されて
いる床部材(20)とからなる。基部(16)は、４つの下向きに延びる脚部材(22)(23)
(24)(25)、中間平坦部(26)、角を成して配備された側壁(27)及びフランジ部(28)
を含んでおり、該フランジ部(28)は、下表面(29)を含み、開口部を形成する自由
端(30)を有している。側壁(32)は、基部(16)の周辺から延び、段付きフランジ(3
4)で終わり、それは、側壁(32)から大体垂直に外向きに延びる第１の水平部(36)
と、第１の水平部(36)から大体垂直に延びる第２の垂直部(38)とを含む。第２の
垂直部(38)は自由縁部(39)で終わるが、その機能は、図６乃至図８を参照して検

図４において最もよく分かるように、床部材(20)は、基部(16)のフランジ部(2
8)の下表面(29)に固定されている。このように、床部材(20)は、食品トレイ(14)
の中の食品をほぼ直接に支える。
基部(12)及び側壁(32)は、プラスチック材料で作られることが望ましく、テレ
フタル酸ポリエチレン（以下
「Ｃ−ＰＥＴＥ」という）で作られるのが最も望ましい。一方、床部材(20)は、
電子レンジ内で食品トレイ(14)を容易に使用できるような複合材料で作られるの
が望ましい。図５を参照すると、床部材(20)は、ポリエステルコーティング(42)
を有する厚紙材料(40)により構成される。厚紙材料(40)とポリエステルコーティ
ング(42)との間に挟まれているのは、アルミニウムなどのマイクロ波感受体物質
(44)である。厚紙材料(40)の外表面(46)は、図３に示される栄養情報(50)やバー
コード情報(52)などの表示(48)を受けるように適合されていることが分かるであ
ろう。
床部材(20)は、食品が食品トレイ(14)の中に置かれる時に、ポリエステルコー
ティング(42)が食品に接触するように、食品トレイ(14)上に配置されている。厚
紙材料(40)は、ポリエステルコーティング(42)の反対側に設けられており、その
外表面(46)は、栄養情報(50)やバーコード情報(52)などの表示が消費者に見える
ように露出している。床部材(20)は、基部(16)のフランジ部(28)に接触する床部
材(20)の部分(60)（図４）のポリエステルコーティング(42)と、フランジ部(28)
自身の両方を部分的に溶かすような熱源を提供することにより、基部(16)に固定
されていることが分かるであろう。熱源が一旦取り除かれると、部分(60)とフラ
ンジ部(28)は結合されて、食品トレイ(14)を形成する。
図６を参照すると、食品パッケージ(10)を組み立てた形のものが示されている
。蓋(21)はまた、側壁(32)の段付きフランジ(34)の第１の部分(36)と同じ範囲を
占める外縁部(70)を含んでいる。外縁部(70)は、熱く溶けた接着剤により第１の
部分に固定されていることが望ましい。蓋(21)は、厚紙で作られ、その外表面に
表示(71)が印刷されていることが望ましい。蓋(21)は切取線(72)を含んでおり、
それは、蓋(21)の一部分をパッケージ(10)から容易に取り外せるようにするもの

ジ（図示せず）の支持表面(80)から、長さＬ分だけ持ち上げられて、空間(81)を
作り出している。この長さＬは、４分の１インチ以上であることが望ましい。こ
の空間を設けることには、二重の利点がある。第１に、ピザ(12)を調理する際に
、床部材(20)と支持表面(80)が、マイクロ波源(83)からのマイクロ波(82)により
作り出される熱を引き離す熱シンクとして働かない。マイクロ波(82)は、ピザ(1
2)全体を均等に加熱するために、空間(81)へ入ることができ、これによって、ピ
ザ(12)の中の冷たい箇所をなくすことができる。第２に、印刷された表示(48)を
含む床部材(20)の外表面(46)もまた、電子レンジの支持表面(80)から一定間隔を

いものにすることができる。
図８はまた、基部に形成された溜め部(collection reservoir)(90)を示してお
り、これは、ピザが調理される間に、ピザ(12)から落ちたいかなるトッピング(9
2)も、ピザ(12)の端から流れ落ちた融けたチーズ(94)も集めるという２つの目的
を果たしている。この後者の機能は、融けたチーズがピザ皮(96)と床部材(20)と
の間に入り、ピザ皮(96)を床部材(20)にくっつける原因となる「ウィッキング(w
icking)」を阻止するものである。
電子レンジなどのオーブンで使用可能な食品トレイ及び電子レンジなどのオー
ブンで使用可能な食品パッケージが開示されたことが分かるであろう。食品トレ
イ及びパッケージは、２つの表面を含んでおり、その表面上には表示が印刷され
、均等に火が通り、生焼けでない食品を作るような材料でできている。
本発明の特定の実施例が開示されたが、当該分野の専門家であれば、開示内容

- 【特許請求の範囲】 １．食品のためのトレイであって、該トレイは、支持表面を有する食品加熱装置 の中に食品が置かれる時に、該食品を支え、トレイは、 開口部を有する基部と、 開口部を覆う床部材を具え、該床部材の縁部は、床部材がトレイ中の食品を ほぼ直接に支えるように、基部に固定されている食品のためのトレイ。 ２．トレイは、電子レンジでの使用に適合するようにされている請求項１のトレ イ。 ３．基部はプラスチックで作られ、 床部材は厚紙で作られ、該厚紙は、プラスチックコーティングが施され、更 に、厚紙とプラスチックコーティングとの間に感受体物質を有している請求項２ のトレイ。 ４．基部は、Ｃ−ＰＥＴＥで作られ、 プラスチックコーティングは、ポリエステルコーティングである請求項３の トレイ。 ５．床部材は、ポリエステルコーティングが食品と対向するように、そして、厚 紙の外側表面は、トレイが食品加熱装置の中に置かれるときに、該食品加熱装置 の支持表面から一定間隔をあけるように配置されている請求項１のトレイ。 ６．厚紙は、その外表面上に表示を有している請求項５のトレイ。 ７．支持表面と床部材との間の間隔は、４分の１インチ以上である請求項６のト レイ。 ８．基部は、１以上の下向きに延びる脚部材を有し、その一部分は支持表面に接 触し、脚部材は、床部材と共同して、脚部材と支持表面との間に空間を作り出す 請求項７のトレイ。 ９．基部は、自由縁部によって開口部が形成されたフランジを含み、 床部材の縁部は、トレイを形成するために、フランジに固定されている請求 項３のトレイ。 10．床部材上のポリエステルコーティングは、床部材を基部に固定するために、 プラスチックフランジに結合されている請求項９のトレイ。 11．フランジは下表面を含み、該下表面は、トレイが食品加熱装置内にあり、床 部材の縁部が下表面に結合されているときに、支持表面と対向している請求項１ ０のトレイ。 12．トレイは、大体長方形であり、基部から延びる側壁を含み、 開口部は大体円形であり、 床部材は大体円形である請求項１のトレイ。 13．食品は、大体円形のピザであり、 トレイは、大体円形のピザを側壁が大体取り囲むような寸法になっている請 求項１２のトレイ。 14．基部の周辺には、食品からこぼれたものを集めるための溜め部が設けられて いる請求項１３のトレイ。 15．ピザは、チーズトッピングのあるピザ皮を含み、 溜め部は、食品加熱装置内でピザを加熱する際に、ピザ皮の端から流れ落ち るいかなる融けたチーズも収容して、ピザ皮が床部材にウィッキングするのが阻 止される請求項１４のトレイ。 16．食品のためのパッケージであって、 開口部を有する基部と、該開口部を覆う床部材とを含むトレイを具え、床部 材の縁部は、床部材がトレイ中の食品をほぼ直接に支えるように、基部に固定さ れており、 基部からは側壁が延び、該側壁は、段付きフランジで終わり、該フランジは 、側壁から大体垂直に外側へ延びる第１の部分及び第２の部分から大体垂直に延 びる第２の部分を含み、第２の部分は自由縁部で終わり、 蓋手段を具え、その一部分は側壁の段付きフランジの第１の部分に固定され て、食品パッケージを形成している食品のためのパッケージ。 17．トレイは、電子レンジでの使用に適合するようにされている請求項１６のパ ッケージ。 18．基部はプラスチックで作られ、 床部材は厚紙で作られ、該厚紙は、プラスチックコーティングが施され、更 に、厚紙とプラスチックコーティングとの間に感受体物質を有している請求項１ ７のパッケージ。 19．蓋手段には、取外し可能な蓋部分を容易に完全に取り外すために切取線が入 れられている請求項１８のパッケージ。 20．切取線は、取外し可能な蓋部分を容易に取り外すための指つまみを形成して いる請求項１９のパッケージ。 21．取外し可能な蓋部分は、取り外された後に、自由縁部上に載ることができる ような寸法になっており、取外し可能な蓋部分と食品との間に空間が作り出され る請求項２０のパッケージ。
