Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A phenylthioacetic acid ester derivative of formula I (X is halogen; R is an organic residue).
EXAMPLE: 2-Amino-3-chloro-phenylacetic acid methyl ester.
USE: Herbicide and its intermediate. Effective to the weeds in ploughed field and annual weeds. Safe to man, cattle and fish. Useful as an intermediate of a herbicide of formula IV.
PROCESS: The phenylthioacetic acid ester derivative of formula I is prepared by reacting an o-aminothiophenol derivative of formula II with a halogenated acetic acid ester of formula III (Y is halogen). The hydrolysis of the compound I gives the compound IV easily in high yield.
