Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover sulfur effectively by a procedure in which waste gas containing sulfur oxides is brought into contact with a carbonaceous adsorbent, e.g., semicoke, etc., so as to cause the sulfur oxides to be adsorbed in the form of sulfuric acid, and then the sulfuric acid is converted into sulfur under a specific temperature condition.
CONSTITUTION: A part of coal as a raw material for boiler is introduced into the carbonizer 24 where it is carbonized at 600W800°C to form semicoke, tar, and gas. The tar and gas are drawn out of the conduit 26, and the semicoke is sent to the activator 30 in order to raise the adsorbability of sulfur oxides and then sent to the adsorber 10 and the converter 46 through the conduits 22 and 42. The waste gas from the boiler 6 is sent through the conduit 8 to the adsorber 10 where sulfur oxides present are adsorbed in the semicoke in the form of sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid-adsorbing semicoke is sent to the separator 14 where the sulfuric acid is decomposed into sulfur dioxide at 300W400°C and then the sulfur dioxide is brought into contact with semicoke in the converter 46 to convert it into sulfur. At least two converters are provided, by which the introduction of sulfur dioxide and the introduction of oxygen for heating are alternately conducted.
