NEW MATERIAL:5-Benzoylphthalonic acid derivative of formula (X, Y are K, Na, lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: Potassium 5-benzoylphthalonate.
USE: Microbicide, especially agricultural pesticide effective to helminthosporium leaf spot of paddy rice plant.
PROCESS: 5-Benzoylphthalonic acid-producing bacteria belonging to Pseudomonas genus, e.g. Pseudomonas SG9611 strain (FERM-P No.4469) are cultured in a medium containing biphenyl as a carbon source, KNO3, etc. as a nitrogen source, and disodium phosphate, etc. as an organic salt, at 25W35°C under nearly neutral conditions. The accumulated 5-benzoylphthalonic acid is extracted, purified, and neutralized with an aqueous solution of KOH to obtain potassium 5-benzoylphthalonate.
