Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as an anit-phlogistic agent, easily, by reacting 2-cyanothiophene with a specific Grignard complex of 2-(4-bromophenyl)-propionaldehyde acetal, and hydrolyzing and oxidizing the product.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound III is prepared by (1) reacting 2-cyanothiophene with a Grignard complex of 2-(4-bromophenyl)propionaldehyde acetal of formula I (R1,2 are lower alkyl or together form ethylene or propylene) in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran, (2) hydrolyzing the resulting 2-[4-(2-thienylcarbonyl)-phenyl]propionaldehyde acetal of formula II with a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid, and (3) oxidizing the hydrolyzate with chromium oxide, potassium permanganate, etc., in the presence of an aicd such as sulfuric acid.
