Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance useful as an intermediate for water and oil repellents or for the synthesis of nonionic surfactants in one step, by reacting ethylene oxide with a perfluoroalkkanesulfonamide in the presence of a base substance.
CONSTITUTION: A perfluoroalkanesulfonamide of formula II: (Rf is 4-12C straight or branched chain perfluoroalkyl group; R is H, 1-20C alkyl, cycloalkyl, allyl, or alkylallyl group) is reacted with ethylene oxide in the presence of a basic substance, e.g. N,N-diethylaniline, at 20W150°C to give a fluorinated alcohol of formula II. A polyoxyethylene oxide formed is useful as a surfactant.
