Abstract

PURPOSE: To impart improved water repellency to a nonporous surface, by treating the surface with a hydrolyzable organosilane, a hydroscopicity adjustor and diluent, and a sulfated alkylpolysiloxane.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylpolysiloxane is mixed with 2 wt.% or less of conc. sulfuric acid and a low-boiling alcohol as a hygroscopicity adjustor and diluent, and heated at 50°C or below with stirring to give a sulfated alkylpolysiloxane, which is mixed with a hydrolyzable organosilane to form a treatment. The treatment is applied to the surface of a nonporous material, e.g. glass, to form a water- repellent film.
