Abstract
PURPOSE: To economically produce high purity alumina fine powder with high chemical stability by scattering molten alumina; solidifying the scattered alumina by quenching; acid-treating the resulting hollow granules to remove impurities; and finely pulverizing the granules.
CONSTITUTION: Molten alumina such as Bayer alumina is scattered by spraying compressed air and solidified by quenching to form thin porous hollow corundum crystal granules of low strength and about 0.1W7 mm diameter. The granules are then dipped in a mineral acid soln. such as sulfuric acid to elution-remove impurities, washed with clear water, heat-dried, and finely pulverized to obtain high purity alumina fine powder.
