Abstract

PURPOSE: The titled emulsion useful for an aqueous coating material etc., capably of giving a film having improved water resistance and corrosion resistance, and prepared by the emulsion polymerization of a vinyl monomer in the presence of a neutralized water-soluble adduct of an amorphous dicyclopentadiene ring opening polymer with maleic acid as an emulsifier.
CONSTITUTION: A ring opening polymer of dicyclopentadiene which is expressed by the formula and substantially amorphous is dissolved in a slovent, e.g. tetralin, and subjected to the addition reaction with maleic acid (anhydride) in the presence of a gelation inhibitor at 190°C, and then dispersed in ion exchange water. Butyl cellosolve, triethylamine, etc. are added to the dispersion and heated at 80W90°C to form a uniform transparent neutralized substance, which is used as an emulsifier to carry out the emulsion polymerization of a vinyl monomer, e.g. an acrylic or methacrylic ester.
