Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals, in high yield, from an aldoxime compound obtained in high yield by reacting hydroxylamine with an aldehyde derived frm a benzylpyridine compound and a formic acid ester, by dehydrating the starting compound with a dehydrating agent.
CONSTITUTION: The substituted nitrile of formula II is prepared by dehydrating an aldoxime of formulaI(R1 and R2 are H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl or halogen) with a dehydrating agent (pref. a strongly basic dehydrating agent such as alkali metal hydroxide and alkali metal alcoholate), pref. in an aprotic polar solvent such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, etc. The aldoxime of formulaIcan be obtained by reacting a benzylpyridine compound with a formic acid ester, and then reacting the reaction product with hydroxylamine.
