Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent decoloration in developed color development color areas or color development in ground areas, by providing a protective layer comprising an acidic zirconium compound and polyvinyl alcohol on a thermal color forming layer provided on a base and comprising a leuco dye and a color developer. CONSTITUTION:A material comprising a leuco dye and a color developer as main constituents with auxiliary constituents added thereto is dispersed in a binder such as polyvinyl alcohol and methoxycellulose to prepare a coating liquid for forming a thermal color forming layer. The coating liquid is applied to a base such as a paper and a plastic film, followed by drying to provide the thermal color forming layer. A coating liquid for forming a protective layer comprising an acidic zirconium compound and polyvinyl alcohol is applied to the color forming layer, followed by drying to provide the protective layer, thereby producing a thermal recording material. The recording material is free of decoloration in image areas or color development in ground areas even upon contact with a plasticizer, an oil, water or the like, and has high reliability.
