Description
Opis wynalazkuDescription of the invention
Przedmiotem wynalazku jest sposób wytwarzania 2,4-dichlorofenolu.The subject of the invention is a method for producing 2,4-dichlorophenol.
W bezpośrednim dichlorowaniu fenolu otrzymuje się produkt o przeciętnym składzie 88,5%2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DF) is an intermediate in the synthesis of the well-known herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The technical purity of 2,4-dichlorophenol determines the purity of 2,4-D acid and the amount of waste and sewage. The commonly used and cheapest method for obtaining 2,4-DF involves chlorinating molten phenol with chlorine gas. Unfortunately, this reaction is not very selective, and after adding 1/2 mole of chlorine per mole of phenol, a mixture of phenol, o- and p-chlorophenols, 2,4- and 2,6-dichlorophenol is formed. 2,4,6-trichlorophenol is also present. Direct dichlorination of phenol produces a product with an average composition of 88.5%.
2.4- dichlorofenolu, 7,5% izomeru 2,6-, pozostałość stanowią o- i p-chlorofenole oraz 2,4,6-trichlorofenol. Wydzielanie z takiej mieszaniny 2,4-dichlorofenolu jest energochłonne i wiąże się z powstawaniem odpadowych, nie mających zastosowania i trudnych do niszczenia chlorofenoli.2,4-dichlorophenol, 7.5% of the 2,6-isomer, the remainder being o- and p-chlorophenols and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. Separating 2,4-dichlorophenol from such a mixture is energy-intensive and results in the formation of waste, unusable, and difficult-to-destroy chlorophenols.
Wysoka selektywność para- sprzyja większej selektywności chlorowania monochlorofenoli doThere are known methods for chlorinating phenols and their derivatives with increased para-selectivity. Para-chlorinated derivatives are used in industry much more often than ortho-chlorinated ones. For example, p-chloro-o-cresol is an intermediate in the synthesis of another herbicide, 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA). High para-selectivity favors greater selectivity of chlorination of monochlorophenols to
2.4- dichlorofenolu. W reakcji z chlorem powstaje zaledwie 60% izomeru para- i 30% izomeru orto-. Stosując bardziej selektywny i mniej aktywny czynnik elektrofilowy - chlorek sulfurylu, zawartość izomeru para- wzrasta maksymalnie do 69%. W obu wypadkach obok monochloro-o-krezoli pozostaje do 10% wolnego, nieschlorowanego o-krezolu. The production of p-chloro-o-cresol by chlorination of o-cresol is a relatively inselective reaction. The reaction with chlorine produces only 60% of the para-isomer and 30% of the ortho-isomer. Using a more selective and less active electrophile, sulfuryl chloride, increases the para-isomer content to a maximum of 69%. In both cases, up to 10% of free, unchlorinated o-cresol remains alongside monochloro-o-cresol. According to U.S. Patent No. 2,777,002, the selectivity of the o-cresol chlorination reaction with sulfuryl chloride increases when conducted in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts. These catalysts were previously known to increase the rate of chlorination of inactive aromatic compounds. According to another U.S. Patent No. 3,920,757, the chlorination of benzene derivatives with high para-selectivity is carried out using sulfuryl chloride in the presence of divalent sulfur compounds and aluminum chloride used as catalysts. According to French Patent No. 8,510,037, the selectivity of phenol chlorination, expressed as the p-/o- isomer ratio for the reaction with chlorine, increases to 3.06 when using sulfur catalysts of the formula R1-S-R2 and organometallic derivatives of dithiophosphoric acid. The additional introduction of aluminum chloride in addition to the sulfur compounds does not change the p-/o- ratio. Known methods for the selective chlorination of phenols are limited to the monochlorination of o-cresol with sulfuryl chloride and phenol with chlorine, but do not include the method for introducing two chlorine atoms and the dichlorination process.
Unexpectedly, it turned out that the selectivity of the phenol chlorination reaction and the yield of 2,4-DF increased up to 97% if the second chlorine atom was introduced in the presence of a two-component catalyst containing sulfur compounds with a lone electron pair and selected metal chlorides of the Lewis acid type.
According to the invention, 2,4-dichlorophenol is obtained by chlorinating a molten mixture of technical monochlorophenols with a para-/ortho- isomer ratio of 1.3 to 6.0 at a temperature of 45 to 90°C with chlorine gas in the presence of one of the sulfur compounds listed below, used in amounts of 0.1 to 1.5% based on chlorophenol, and an equal amount of zinc or iron chloride. Sulfur compounds include oxides, diphenyl sulfide, or thiophene, and their chlorine and alkyl derivatives. Chlorine is fed at a rate that maximizes its conversion at the applied temperature, mixing system, and reaction heat removal system. The final portion of chlorine is introduced at a rate that allows for complete reaction of the free chlorine dissolved in the reacting mass. The initial technical mixture Monochlorophenols are obtained by chlorination of phenol with sulfuryl chloride or chlorine gas, wherein the catalysts are introduced into the chlorinated mass at the monochlorination stage or before the start of dichlorination.
The selectivity of the chlorination reaction of active aromatic compounds, including phenol and its derivatives, is the result of many factors. It includes the electronic and steric effects of the substrate and the chlorinating agent, as well as the influence of catalysts. Catalysts can form macromolecular chlorination complexes with steric effects, influence electrophilic activity, and even convert the ionic mechanism into a highly selective radical mechanism.
PL 197 863 B1PL 197 863 B1
Selektywność monochlorowania wyraża się stosunkiem izomerów p-/o- natomiast dichlorowania stosunkiem izomerów 2,4-/2,6-, oraz wydajnością 2,4-DF.This indicates that the selectivity conditions for chlorination reactions are different when the first atom is introduced into the phenol ring and the second atom is introduced into a mixture of p- and o-chlorophenols. In the latter case, we encounter steric hindrance from the already present chlorine atom and a different electron density in the ring. The selectivity of monochlorination is expressed by the p-/o- isomer ratio, while that of dichlorination is expressed by the 2,4-/2,6- isomer ratio and the yield of 2,4-DF.
W drugim etapie odpowiednią aktywność elektrofilową oraz efekt steryczny zapewnia obecność katalitycznej ilości kompleksu organicznego związku siarki i nieorganicznego kwasu Lewisa z grupy chlorków metali. Ilustrują to poniższe przykłady. According to the invention, high selectivity of up to 97% in the synthesis of 2,4-dichlorophenol is achieved by selecting catalysts, chlorinating agents, and process conditions specific to the dichlorination step. Thus, after monochlorination of phenol with sulfuryl chloride, after obtaining a product with a p-/o- isomer ratio of 4 to 5, further chlorination is carried out with gaseous chlorine, a more electrophilic agent, in the presence of catalytic amounts of sulfur oxide and zinc chloride. This yields 2,4-dichlorophenol with a 97% isomer purity. A similar result is achieved by using chlorine in the first step. The resulting mixture of chlorophenol isomers then has a low p-/o- ratio of 1.3 to 1.6. In the second step, the presence of a catalytic amount of a complex of an organic sulfur compound and an inorganic Lewis acid from the metal chloride group ensures appropriate electrophilic activity and steric effect. The high selectivity of the dichlorination reaction using the method of the invention is not a result of the combined action of individual catalysts, as when used individually, they exhibit little or no effect. This is illustrated by the examples below. The weight ratio of the two catalysts relative to each other, which is 1:1±0.5 and relative to phenol, is also important in the method of the invention.
