Abstract

To detect the edge (W) of a layer (N1) of the workpiece to be stitched, before the stitch-forming site of a sewing machine (1), the detection point is illuminated and the intensity of the fraction of the light reflected at the detection point and the intensity of the fraction of the light transmitted at the detection point are measured separately from each other. In each case, the measurement for which the measured value of the intensity would be expected to make the more distinct jump if the edge (W) of the workpiece to be stitched appears at the detection point is selected in order to generate a signal for detecting the edge (W) of the workpiece to be stitched. Preferably, the measurement selected is that the measured value of which has the higher amplitude before the edge (W) of the workpiece to be stitched has appeared.
