Verfahren zur Herstellung von Sinterkorund, insbesondere für Schneidwerkzeuge.
Es ist bekannt, Sinterkorund für verschleissfeste Gegenstände und auch für Schneidwerkzeuge zu verwenden. Sowohl für Schleifscheiben als auch für die Schneidwerkzeuge hat sich der Zusatz von Chromoxyd zur Härtesteigerung als vorteilhaft erwiesen. Bei der Herstellung von Sinterkorund aus Gemischen von Aluminiumoxyd und Chromoxyd ist es aber äusserst schwierig, eine gleichmässige feste Lösung des Chromoxyds in Aluminiumoxyd zu erzielen, da beide Bestandteile hochschmelzend sind. Man hat daher vielfach als Zusatz nicht reines Chromoxyd, sondern niedrig schmelzende Chromschlacken gewählt.
Es wurde gefunden, dass man eine gleichmässige Verteilung des Chromoxyds und eine leichtere Sinterung des Korundkörpers erzielen kann, wenn man nicht vom Chromoxyd ausgeht, sondern Chromhalogen-Sauerstoffverbindungen zusetzt.
So schmelzen Chromoxychloride bei steigender Temperatur unter teilweiser Zersetzung und Umsetzung mit dem Aluminiumoxyd, wodurch ein Sintern bei niedriger Temperatur und eine gleichmässige Verteilung des Chromgehaltes gewährleistet werden. Man kann auch einen Zusatz von Chromchlorid verwenden, doch ist er wegen des schon bei Rotglut hohen Dampfdrucks dieser Verbindung technisch unzweckmässig.

It is known to use sintered corundum for wear-resistant objects and also for cutting tools. The addition of chromium oxide to increase the hardness has proven to be advantageous for both grinding wheels and cutting tools. When producing sintered corundum from mixtures of aluminum oxide and chromium oxide, however, it is extremely difficult to achieve a uniform solid solution of the chromium oxide in aluminum oxide, since both components have a high melting point. In many cases, therefore, not pure chromium oxide but low-melting chromium slag has been chosen as an additive.
It has been found that a uniform distribution of the chromium oxide and easier sintering of the corundum body can be achieved if one does not start from the chromium oxide, but rather adds chromium-halogen-oxygen compounds.
Chromium oxychlorides, for example, melt as the temperature rises with partial decomposition and reaction with the aluminum oxide, which ensures sintering at a low temperature and an even distribution of the chromium content. Chromium chloride can also be added, but it is technically impractical because of the high vapor pressure of this compound, even when it is red heat.
