<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Combined signaling and automatic braking device for railway convoys.
@
The invention relates to automatic braking devices for railway convoys of the kind in which a stop on the track actuates a knocker carried by the locomotive and acting on the brake control.
The invention essentially consists in that the stop is movable and is controlled simultaneously with the signal for opening or closing of the track so as to be out of the field of the knocker when the track is open and in the field of. this knocker when the lane is closed.
In accordance with the invention, the abutment is erased and put into place by oscillation of the latter on oscillating levers driven by the intervention of the signal control. The stop offers two planes inclined to the knocker, so that it can be used in both directions of the locomotive on the track it controls.
The invention also relates to the self-braking device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
vacuum matic and essentially consists of simultaneously actuating the shutters arranged on the pipe upstream and downstream of the handbrake by the knocker to close the compressed air passage upstream of the handbrake and put the pipe in communication ¯ with the The atmosphere downstream of the handbrake when the knocker comes into contact with the track stop to cause automatic braking of the convoy.
According to the invention, this double shutter can be constituted by a four-way valve, the nut of which normally opens the compressed air line upstream of the handbrake while it closes the exhaust of the line downstream of the hand brake. hand, the knocker controlling the nut in such a way that when it is moved by the stop it cuts off the compressed air supply upstream of the handbrake and puts the pipe in communication with the atmosphere downstream of the handbrake to cause the depression to close the brakes.
An adjustment valve with a setting device is provided on the pipe downstream of the hand brake and the exhaust, or on this exhaust itself, for the prior adjustment of said exhaust and obtaining the desired progressiveness of the automatic brake.
In the case of an oscillating bumper, the invention comprises a sector with detent notches engaged with this bumper to maintain it in the position to which it was brought by contact with the stop of the track.
To ensure automatic braking whatever the direction of travel of the convoy on the track, two combined stops may be placed on either side of this track, or alternatively the locomotive may have two con judged bumpers, one to the left and the other to the right.
The invention also relates to the control of the pressure brakes by the knocker, the valve controlled by the latter or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by one of them opening the air supply to the brakes downstream of the handbrake when this bumper is actuated by the stop. In this case the release of the first acting on the brakes can be done as usual by the handbrake lever.
The invention finally relates to the combined control of the brake and of the moderator by means of the knocker, the latter during its movement by the stop actuating a valve interposed on a pipe connecting the compressed air reservoir to a piston cylinder. The movement of the piston controls the moderator.
A preferred embodiment of this control consists in wedging on the axis of the moderator a toothed pinion with which is engaged a rack integral with the piston; the displacement of the piston under the action of the air admitted into the cylinder causes the displacement of the rack and the latter rotates the pinion and the axis of the moderator on which it is wedged, which has the effect of close the moderator when the brakes are locked.
Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of an example of an embodiment of this invention.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 7 and 7a indicate in its two operating positions and in cross section a detail of the automatic control of the moderator.
Fig. 8 shows in section along the line VIII-VIII of FIG. 6 the automatic brake valve.
Fig. 9 is a section taken along the line VIII-VIII of FIG. 8.
Fig. 10 is a section taken along line X-X of FIG. 8.
Fig. 9a and 10a, are sections taken along lines IX-IX and X-X of FIG. 8 respectively, analogous to FIGS. 9 and 10, but with the valve nut in the position corresponding to braking.
The stopper 1 which is arranged parallel to the track, 2 of which indicates the rails, consists of a curved surface at the lower part of which are articulated two angled levers 3 oscillating in bearings 4 supported by crossbars 5. On the The axes of the levers 3 are wedged by the pulleys 6 on which the chain 7 is wound, controlling the track signal 8.
When the way is not free, as indicated by signal 8 in Fig. 4, the stopper 1 occupies the position shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 4 and depending on the direction of travel, one of the knockers 9 hits it to activate the automatic brake and close the moderator. These knockers 9 are maintained in the braking position, after having struck the stop 1, by a sector with detent notches 10.
It is necessary on the one hand that the length of the stopper can be adjusted for given stop heights, on the other hand that this length always remains sufficient to ensure operation with stops which do not all rise to exactly one position. same height. We will therefore have to have a length of stopper which may be quite much larger than what is strictly necessary. It follows that a rigid stopper could be damaged or damage the parts.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cooperating, and Fig. 5 shows an execution of the stopper suitable to meet the stated operating conditions. The part 48 of the stopper is fixed to the nut 18 or to an intermediate part fixed to this nut and forms a slide by rims.
The knocker 9 can be immobilized at the desired height in the slide 48 by means of bolts and nuts 49.
At the free end of the knocker 9 is articulated on an axis 50 the oscillating part 51 at the lower end of which is mounted the roller 52 with rubberized tire 53. The oscillating part 51 is held in the position represented by a coil spring. 54 attached on the one hand at 55 to this part 51 and on the other hand to a screw 56 passing through a support nut 57 fixed to the part 9, so that the spring tension can be adjusted by the screw 56 and that the part 51 can oscillate in contact with the stop 1 to elastically drive the stopper 9 and bring it elastically into contact with the stops 58 limiting its travel.
The automatic brake comprises (Fig. 6) the known components: the steam cylinder 11 and the compressor 12, the latter delivering the compressed air through the line 13 into the receiver 14 from which the compressed air necessary to keep the brakes open is taken. by the pipe 15 in which is interposed the usual handbrake 16. In the pipe 15 is Interposed according to the invention a valve 17 whose nut 18 controlled by the knockers 9, simultaneously controls two other channels 1 ' one 19 in communication with the atmosphere and the other 20 in communication with a branch 21 of the pipe 15 downstream of the hand brake 16.
Normally, the knockers 9 occupy the position indicated in solid lines in figure 6 and the nut 18 occupies in the plug 17 the corresponding position indicated by figures 8, 9 and 10, the compressed air having access in the pipe 15
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
beyond the handbrake 16 and the communication of the connection 21 with the atmosphere being cut.
When signal 8 is at a standstill and flight 2 is therefore not free, stopper 1 is in the field of stopper 9 and if the convoy does not obey the stop signal this stopper 9 hits the stop 1 and is thus moved so as to occupy a position such as that indicated in broken lines in FIG. 6 and the nut is then placed so as to cut off the circulation of the compressed air in the pipe 15 and to put this pipe to the exhaust through the connection 21, the channel 20 of the valve 17, the groove 22 of the nuts 18 and track 19, which causes the brakes to close,
The valve 23 interposed in the pipe 21 allows the prior adjustment of the flow rate of the exhaust via the channel 19 and is provided with a locking nut 24 to immobilize it once the adjustment has been made.
With pressure brakes, it suffices to provide a bypass of the braking pipe upstream and downstream of the handbrake and to provide this bypass with a shut-off valve, the opening of which is controlled by the knocker.
The automatic control of the moderator (fig. 6,7 and 7a) comprises an extension 25 of the knocker 9 beyond the nut 18, this extension 25 carrying a roller 26 movable in a slide 27 guided at 28 and articulated to an arm of lever 29 fixed on the nut 30 of a stopcock 31 interposed in the pipe 32-33 going from the reservoir 14 to the cylinder 34. In this cylinder 34 slides a piston 35 carrying a rod 36 guided in a guide 37 and extended by a rack 38 engaged with
40 the toothed pinion 39 wedged on the axis, of the moderator 41.
In the position of the knocker 9 and its extension 25 shown in solid lines in FIG. 6, with its corresponding position of the members 26, 27, 29 and 30 (fig. 6) the valve 31 closes the compressed air inlet to the cylinder 34 which is in com
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
communication with the atmosphere on the one hand under the piston 35 by the bent passage 42 of the nut 30 of the valve 31 which puts in communication the channel 43 of this valve to which the pipe 33 is connected with the channel 44 in communication with free air, on the other hand above the piston through an orifice 45. This position of the lever 25 and of the cooperating members allows the opening of the moderator 41 which determines the descent of the piston 35 by driving the rack. 38 by means of pinion 39 (solid lines).
When the knocker 9 having encountered the stop of the track is brought to its position shown in broken lines in FIG.
6, the lever 25 also occupies the position shown in broken lines in this figure and has caused the lowering of the slide 27 and of the lever 29, which has the effect of bringing the nut 30 of the valve 31 into the position shown at Fig. 7a.
In this position, this nut 30 closes the channel 44 communicating with the atmosphere and places the channels 43 and 46 connected to the pipes 32 and 33 in communication through its bent passage 42 and the compressed air is admitted under the piston 35 which rises by expelling through the orifice 45 the air located above it and driving the rack 38 upwards to its position shown in dotted lines which has the effect of rotating the pinion 39 wedged on the axis 40, to close the moderator 41 by putting it in the position shown in broken lines.
It will be understood that the invention is independent of the forms, proportions, devices, details and material of execution.
In summary, the invention relates to:
1.- the movable stopper controlled simultaneously with the opening or closing signal of the track so as to be out of the scope of the knocker when the track is open and in the scope of the knocker when the track is closed.
