<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements to sewing machines with adjustable fabric drive mechanism.
The present invention relates to a sewing machine with an adjustable drive mechanism for the fabric, this mechanism being housed, for example, in a free, trough-shaped arm of the machine, and being arranged in such a way. that the advancement of the fabric can be altered, during operation of the machine, both in size and direction.
It mainly consists in subjecting the control lever, which serves as a support for the drive claw, to the action of two eccentrics in such a way that one of these eccentrics exerts a movement component on the claw. in the direction of height while the other transmits to it a horizontal movement component via a movement transmitting member, which is engaged with an adjustable slide guide, this horizontal component depending, in size and, ,,, direction, the position of said sliding guide.

The accompanying drawings show, by way of example and insofar as this is necessary for understanding the invention, an embodiment of the latter.
Fig 1 shows, in longitudinal section, part of the free arm of a sewing machine.
Fig. 2 similarly shows the same components, but in a different characteristic position.
Fig. 3 shows, in plan, the same device, but after removal of the cover covering this arm.
Fig. 4 shows, in broken section along X - X fig. 1, the device in question while FIGS. 5 and 6 show certain members of this section but in different characteristic positions.
The sewing machine, for example portable, comprises a free arm 1, in the form of a trough, provided with a cover 3 and on which the fabric to be sewn is placed. In this arm comprising transverse partitions 2, 4 and 35, is housed a fabric drive mechanism, actuated by the shaft 5 which controls the shuttle (not shown). This shaft rests, at its outer end, in the partition 2 and rotates, being driven by a motor, always in the same direction. For one revolution of the shaft 5, the needle moving in an upward and downward reciprocating motion makes a point.
On the partitions 2 and 4 is wedged a shaft 6 carrying a finger 7 provided with an axis 8. parallel to the drive shaft 5. On this axis 8 is mounted a control lever 9 in which is formed a horizontal slide. 10 at the level of the shaft µ. In this slide is engaged an eccentric 15 which can slide, with a long key, on the shaft 5 and by means of a fork 15a and a rod 41 with control arm side 42, which can slide axially in the partitions 2, 4 and 35. By sliding the eccentric 15 to the right of the pin 2, the latter is released from the slide 10 so that the control lever 9 comes to occupy
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a lowered position, as shown in fig. 2.
The eccentric
15 has a ramp on the c8té of the control lever 9 and it follows that, when the eccentric 15 is moved in the other direction, the lever 9 engages, by its slide 10, on the eccentric and comes to occupy , again, the position shown in fig 1.
The upper end of the lever 9 carries a flange 11 onto which the feed dog 12 of the fabric is screwed. When the lever 9 is lowered to the position indicated above, the claw 12 comes underneath the shelf so that the fabric can be moved freely on it. In fig. 3 claw 12 has not been shown for reasons of clarity. The lever 9 also carries a lateral sleeve 13 in which a rod is housed
14. The eccentric 16 is also mounted on the shaft 5 but is offset by 90 relative to the eccentric 15 and it carries a rod 17 through which a rod 19 passes.
On one side of the rod
17, the rod 19 carries a finger 18 articulated to the rod 14 and on the other side the rod 19 carries a sliding sleeve 20 which is engaged in a slide 21, cut in a rotating block 22 of which part 23 of the periphery is toothed. The block 22 is engaged on one end of a pivot 29, engaged in the partition 4 and the other end of which carries a retaining ring 30 with pin 31. A coil spring 32, engaged on the pivot 29 between the ring 30 and partition 4, constantly attracts the sliding block
22 against the partition 4 so that the brake rings 33, established on the other side of the partition 4 on the pivot 29, are compressed as a function of the traction thus exerted.
In the serrations 23 is engaged a toothed sector 25 forming part of an adjustment cam 24 mounted on an auxiliary shaft 27, carried by the partitions 4 and 35 and on which is fixed an adjustment lever
26 which serves to rotate the shaft 27 of the desired angle. On the pins 4, 5 and 6, the locations I and III correspond to the extreme positions of the lever 26 and the location II to the middle position.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The operation of the tissue driving device, as described above, is as follows:
The control lever 9 is driven in a substantially reciprocating movement, up and down, using the eccentric 15 and the horizontal slide 10. The movement of the lever 9, in a transverse plane, takes place using the rod 14, engaged in the sleeve 13. This rod 14 is connected by the finger 18 to the rod 19. As long as the latter, under the control of the rod 17, performs a movement in the plane median vertical, the lever 9 is held in such a way ,, that it does not effect in substance, that the aforesaid vertical back-and-forth movement.
This occurs when the rotating slide 21 occupies the vertical position shown in FIG. 4, because in this case the sliding sleeve 21 and with it the rod 19 also move vertically up and down. If the rotating slide 21 is moved away from its vertical position, as in FIG. 5, the rod 19 moves away from a lower position, to the left of the median plane, to an upper position, to the right of this plane. The horizontal movement component thus obtained is transmitted by the finger 18 to the rod 14 and, consequently, to the control lever 9 and to the claw 12.
As the eccentrics 15 and 16 are offset by 90 with respect to each other, it can easily be seen that the claw 12 of the lever describes, in this case, a slightly deformed ellipse whose vertical axis has a double eccentricity of that of the eccentric 15 and the horizontal axis of which is the horizontal component of the path traveled by the rod 19. The ellipse is slightly deformed for the reason that the fingers 7 and 18 are not strictly rectilinear guides but have finite radii .
The advance adjustment and the reversal of the driving direction take place by angular displacement of the sliding block 22, which is obtained with the aid of the toothed cam 24 and the adjustment lever 26, for example. through the auxiliary shaft 27
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
If the adjustment lever 26 is placed horizontally (fig. 4), the rotary slide 21 is vertical and there is practically no horizontal movement of the claw 12. If the lever 26 is in position I or II or an intermediate position between 1-II and II-III, the rotating slide 21 comes to occupy a more or less inclined position, the inclination taking place either from left to right or from right to left.
According to the angle of inclination, one obtains the adjustment of the amplitude of advance and according to the direction of the inclination, that of the direction of movement of the claw. The size of the drive can therefore be changed at will and the direction of the drive can be reversed, even while the machine is running, since it suffices, for this purpose, to angularly move the sliding block 22 which does not run with the machine,
Thanks to the action of the spring 32 and of the brake discs 33, the block 22 remains in the position which has been given to it. To turn it, it suffices to overcome the frictional resistance of the discs 33 using the adjustment lever 26.
