 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

On trouve :

 EXEMPLE 2.

  NEW ORGANOSILICIC RESINS AND THEIR PREPARATIONS.

   The present invention relates to organosilicon resins of a novel type characterized in that they simultaneously contain -Si-Si- bonds and -SI-0-Si bonds and their preparations.
According to the present invention, these organosilicon resins are prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of organosilicon derivatives of general formula (CH3) mSinXp in which X represents a hydrolyzable group, for example a halogen atom (chlorine or bromine), n is an integer greater than 1 and m and p are integers related to each other and to n by the equation m + p = 2n + 2.

   These new organosilicon resins give rise to interesting industrial applications, in particular those which are derived from compounds of formula I in which X represents chlorine and n is equal to 2. that is to say those which are derived from methylchlorodisilanes.

   The compounds of formula I can be prepared in various ways, for example. by the action of an alkali metal such as sodium on methylchlorosianes or a mixture of methylchlorosilanes. or by the action of Grignard reagents on hexachlorrodisilane. However.

   this method of preparation is not of great interest from an industrial point of view because it is known that the products corresponding to formula I constitute by-products of the preparation of methylchlorosilanes by the action of

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 Methyl chloride on silicon in the presence of catalysts = The quantity of these by-products can represent from 10% by weight of that of the methylchlorosilanes obtained and therefore this process constitutes an important source for the raw materials necessary for the present invention.

   In fact, the object of the present invention is also to enhance this residue. which hitherto had little or no interest from an industrial point of view., -In this preparation process, the various methylchlorosilanes are separated by fractional distillation and. in particular, dimethylidichlorosilane boiling at 70, the distillation residue consisting mainly of methylchlorodisilanes. compounds of formula I. This residue distills for the most part between 120 and 170 at atmospheric pressure and can be fractionated to separate a number of well-defined chemicals and a number of mixtures. - ges of complexed methylpolysilanes.

   For example the -fraction passing between 146 and 1520 consists mainly of trimethyltrichlorodisilane (dosage of chlorine found 51.26% for 51.3% theoretical) d420 equal to 1.158.

  The fraction which distils between 152 and 1540 which titers 57.96% chlorine and has a density equal to 1.229 is apparently constituted by a mixture of approximately 60% of tetrachlorodimethylidisilane and 40% of trichlorodiaethyldisilane.

   The novel organosilicon resins according to the present invention can be prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of the entire crude residue boiling at 120-170, or from individual fractions boiling between the intervals specified above. for the preparation of particular products, the starting products can be mixed with methyl- or phenylchlorosilanes mono-. di- or tri-substituted, the mixture then being hydrolyzed and condensed. The proportions added naturally depend on the desired value for the CH3 / Si ratio of the final resin and on the particular physical and chemical characteristics which are desired for this resin.

   The choice of the nature and the proportions of these additions as a function of the desired characteristics does not present any difficulties.

   Hydrolysis and. simultaneous condensation. compounds of formula I and. in particular disilanes and mixtures of disilanes, can be carried out by methods known per se for the hydrolysis of alkylhalosilanes. Preferably. a solution of the disilanes in the organic solvent is poured into water, but conversely it is possible to add water to the solution of the disilanes in the organic solvent. This hydrolysis can be carried out at very variable temperatures. However, it has been found to be advantageous to use diethyl ether as the solvent medium and in this case the reaction temperature should be limited to 40.

   As regards the chemical constitution of the resins obtained according to the present invention. it has been observed that the inexistence of -Si-O-Si- bonds is due to the presence of -Si-Ci bonds before hydrolysis. The presence of -Si-Si- bonds is demonstrated by the fact that the product of hydrolysis. after washing, filtration and evaporation of the solvent. reduces Fehling's liquor when hot.

   Furthermore. the hydrolysis products, after removal of the volatiles, for example by heating for two hours at 200, have the property of increasing the weight by subsequent heating in air. and this is due to the oxidation of -Si-Si- bonds into -Si-0-Si- bonds, The presence of -Si-Si- bonds is further confirmed by the fact that by treating the hydrolysis product of the present invention with a 30% solution of caustic soda, there is evolution of hydrogen and this phenomenon is described by Rochow in his book "An introduction to the Chemistry of the silicones" second edition, pages 6 and 164, as conforming the presence of -Si-Si- bonds.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   The organosilicon resins according to the present invention have properties comparable to those of polysiloxane resins of known types. These new resins are soluble, for example, in the same organic solvents (toluene, chlorobenzene, white spirit, petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and trichlorethylene). These resins are generally used in the form of dilute solutions. , however, solutions containing 60 to 70% by weight of resins are excellent in storage stability.

   The resins obtained according to the present invention can be used in any manner known for polysiloxane resins and can be polymerized with the aid of catalysts. They have the same applications as organopolysiloxanes. for example: electrical insulators, molding powders, water-repellent agents and more particularly water-repellent agents for masonry.

   It has been found that the addition of 1% (as dry residue) to the alkyd type oven enamels gives the resulting film an increase in hardness and gloss. In addition, the addition of 1 to 5% to the same enamels of the alkyd type used for remeshing exterior cabinets of refrigerators and washing machines. gives these enamels increased resistance to the detergents commonly used for their maintenance.

     The addition of 10 to 15% of these new organo-silicic resins to "anti-fouling" paints intended for boats activates the cold drying of these paints, increases their surface hardness and makes them water-repellent without this addition reducing the adhesion of these paints. special paints for wood and sheet metal.

   The following non-limiting examples illustrate the invention. The parts are understood by weight.

  EXAMPLE 1.

   In an apparatus fitted with a stirrer and a reflux condenser. 333 parts of water are charged, and a solution consisting of: -trichiorotrimethylidisilanes 100 parts -diethyl ether 180 parts is then added over twenty minutes
The temperature which was at the start of 20 is then kept below 40. Stirred for another hour after the end of casting, then the acidic water is decanted. The ethereal layer is washed until neutral. it is dried over sodium sulfate and then the ether is evaporated off.

   The resin thus obtained has the particularity of losing 5% of its weight after heating for two hours at 2000; however, if the heating is continued for twenty-four hours at 200 it fixes oxygen in the air and the total weight loss is only 4.15%.

   For the subsequent use of the resin, it is convenient to isolate it from the reaction medium in the form of a 60% solution in toluene.

   Such a solution has a density of 0.991. a viscosity of 13 is 20 and a refractive index of 1.481.

   This resin can be used for waterproofing masonry and its properties emerge from the following comparative results:

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

Four bricks are taken, one of which is used as a control, the other bricks being respectively coated with the following mixtures: a) resin obtained as above. as a 60% solution in toluene. diluted to 1% with white spirit. b) methylpolysiloxane resin with an EC / Si ratio equal to 1.5 diluted to 1% with white spirit. c) methylpolysiloxane resin with a CH3 / Si ratio equal to 1.3, diluted to 1% with white spirit.

   The bricks were allowed to air dry at room temperature for seven days and were then subjected to the hydrostatic test which consisted in applying to the treated surface a column of water 35 cm high.

  The drop in the level of the water column is measured, which gives a measure of the absorption of water by the brick. We find :

 EXAMPLE 2.

   In an apparatus identical to that of Example 1, 333 parts of water are placed and then added to the water, with continuous stirring, over twenty minutes, a solution having the following composition - polysiloxane residue boiling at 152-154 as mentioned above 90 parts - dimethyldichlorosilanes 10 parts - diethyl ether 180 parts
The temperature which was 20 at the start is kept below 40.

   The procedure is then as in Example 1 and a resin is obtained which has the property of losing 2.2% of its weight after heating for two hours at 2000. However, if it is continued to be heated for twenty four hours at 2000, , it fixes oxygen from the air and the total weight gain is 2.7%.

   For subsequent applications, it is convenient !, as has already been said in Example 1, to isolate the resin in the form of a 60% solution in toluene. This solution has a viscosity of 103 and 20 , a density of 1.021 and a refractive index of 1.488.

   It can be used for waterproofing masonry under the same conditions as described in Example 1. A particular characteristic.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 The only thing about this resin is that it dries at room temperature in a few hours.

  EXAMPLE 3.

   An apparatus identical to that described in Example 1 is charged with the 125 part of water and then poured into the water, stirring continuously, over twenty minutes, a solution having the following composition: - crude residue obtained by distillation of
 EMI5.1
 methyldiahlorosllanes (chlorine title equal to 48%). consists of 450 parts methyl chloropolydisilanes - 550 parts diethyl ether
The temperature which was at the start of 200 is kept below 400. The operation is then carried out as in Example 1 and the resin is isolated in the form of a 60% solution in toluene. This solution has a density of 0.998 and a viscosity from 15 is to 20.

  It can be applied to the waterproofing of masonry under the same conditions as described in Example 1 and it gives the treated bricks a comparable degree of waterproofing.

  EXAMPLE 4.

   The procedure is as in Example 3 by pouring into 1.125 parts of water a solution consisting of: - crude residue (as in Example 3) 405 parts - 45 parts dimethyldichlorosilanes - 550 parts diethyl ether
A resin of which the 60% solution in toluene has a density of 0.995 and a viscosity of 10 cst to 20 is then obtained, according to the process used in the preceding examples. This solution has the advantageous property of being much more stable on storage than that of the resin described in Example 2. Thus this solution. maintained at 45, in a closed glass bottle, does not gel after storage for more than a year.

    EXAMPLE 5.

   In the apparatus used in the preceding examples, a solution consisting of - distilled residue boiling at 150-160 450 parts - diethyl ether 550 parts is poured into 1000 parts of water.
The resin obtained, heated for four hours at 100, then two hours at 200, loses 7.6% of its weight. However, if the heating is continued for twenty-four hours at 200, it fixes oxygen from the air so that the total weight loss is only 5.6%. The 60% toluene solution of this resin is remarkably stable on storage.

  Its viscosity does not vary after one and a half years of storage in an ordinary glass vessel at room temperature.

   This resin can be used as a base for a heat resistant aluminum paint, it suffices to add to 100 per-
