In Formel (1) sind X2, X3 und X4 gewählt aus Wasserstoff, Halogen, Fluor, Chlor, Brom, Jod und Nitrii (-C=N) mit der 20 Massgabe, dass zwei von X2, X3, X4 nicht Wasserstoff sind ; Z bedeutet die Methylengruppe -CH2- oder die Äthersauerstoffbrücke -0-; m und n sind jeweils Null, 1 oder 2 mit der Massgabe, dass die Summe von n und m mindestens 1 und höchstens 3 ist. Für viele Zwecke werden Verbindungen (1) bevorzugt, bei welchen n = 1 und m Null oder 1 ist.

Bei einer ebenfalls bevorzugten Gruppe von Verbindungen der Formeln (1) bzw. (2) ist R eine Alkylgruppe mit 1-12 C-Atomen, vorzugsweise mit 3-9 C-Atomen, wie z. B. n-Pentyl oder n-Heptyl.

Die neuen Verbindungen (1) sind nach verschiedenen Methoden erhältlich; diejenigen Verbindungen der Formel (1), in welcher Z die Methylenbrücke (-CH2-) bedeutet, sind zweckmässig z. B. nach dem folgenden Schema I nach einer Grignard-Umsetzung und nachfolgender Reduktion erhältlich, während 60 diejenigen Verbindungen der Formel (1), in welcher Z die Äthersauerstoffbrücke (-0-) bedeutet, vorteilhaft durch Kondensation gemäss Schema II zugänglich sind. Verbindungen der Formel (1), in welcher X2, X3 oder X4 die Nitrilgruppe ist, können durch Nitrilieren aus den entsprechenden Verbindungen (1) erhalten werden, in welchen das entsprechende X2, X3 oder X4 ein für die Nitrilierung geeignetes Halogenatom, z. B. Brom, ist.

Herstellung von 4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexylmethoxy)-3-fluor-

Die Herstellung dieser Verbindung erfolgte nach dem nach- x—' n N—' m stehenden Schema IV. Hierzu wurden 4-Hydroxy-3-fluorbenzo-nitril (1,0 g, 0,0074 Mol) undtrans-4-Pentylcyclohexylmethyl-bromid (2,5 g, 0,0102 Mol) mit Butan-2-on (50 ml) versetzt; das Gemisch wurde auf Rückfluss erwärmt, unter Rühren 48 h auf Rückflusstemperatur gehalten, dann auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt, in Wasser (250 ml) gegossen und mit Chloroform (dreimal 50 ml) extrahiert. Die vereinigten organischen Phasen wurden mit Wasser gewaschen und über Magnesiumsulfat getrocknet.

in Anteilen von 1-90 Mol% ; derartige Mischungen können in an sich üblicher Weise durch Vereinigen der Komponenten, gegebenenfalls Erwärmen, und Mischen erhalten und in bekannter Weise in die Anzeigezellen eingefüllt werden.
Erfindungsgemässe FK-Verbindungen der Formel (1) sind von besonderem Vorteil, insbesondere für Basismischungen, die sich allgemein für nematische Drehzellen (TN) eignen, welche jeweils einen hohen Grad an Multiplexierbarkeit benötigen, um hohe Informationsdichten zu bieten, beispielsweise für Ein-oder/und Ausgabegeräte in tragbaren Systemen, etwa für Text-5 editoren, Teletextgeräte, Personalcomputer, Speicheroszillo-skope und dergleichen.

Claims (10)
- 660 003PATENTANSPRÜCHE 1. Anisotrope Verbindungen der Formel (1)(1)in welcher R eine Alkyl-, Alkoxy- oder Alkanoyloxygruppe mit jeweils 1-12 C-Atomen im Alkylteil, der eine gerade oder verzweigte und gegebenenfalls chirale Kette hat, ist, X2, X3 und X4 gewählt sind aus Wasserstoff, Halogen und Nitrii mit der Massgabe, dass zwei von X2, X3, X4 nicht Wasserstoff sind, Z die Methylengruppe -CH2- oder die Äthersauerstoffbrücke -O-bedeutet und m und n jeweils Null, 1 oder 2 mit der Massgabe sind, dass die Summe von n und m mindestens 1 und höchstens 3 ist.
- 2. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 1, gekennzeichnet durch die Formel (2)h-,ch(2)in der R, X2, X3 und X4 die in Anspruch 1 angegebene Bedeutung haben.
- 3. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass R eine Alkylgruppe mit 1-12 C-Atomen, vorzugsweise mit 3-9 C-Atomen, z. B. n-Pentyl oder n-Heptyl, ist.
- 4. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 2 oder 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass X4 die Nitrilgruppe oder ein Halogenatom ist.
- 5. Verbindungen nach einem der Ansprüche 2-4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass eine von X^X3 ein Halogenatom, vorzugsweise Fluor, und die andere Wasserstoff ist.
- 6. Verbindungennach Anspruch 1, gekennzeichnet durch die Formel (6) 2 3R —* Ho-ch20(6)in der R, X2, X3 und X4 die in Anspruch 1 angegebene Bedeutung haben und m1 Null oder 1 ist.
- 7. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass R eine Alkylgruppe mit 1-12 C-Atomen, vorzugsweise mit 3-8 C-Atomen, z. B. n-Pentyl oder n-Heptyl ist.
- 8. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 6 oder 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass X4 die Nitrilgruppe ist und eine von X2, X3 ein Halogenatom, vorzugsweise Fluor, und die andere Wasserstoff ist.
- 9. Verbindungen nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass n gleich 1 und m Null, 1 oder 2, vorzugsweise Null oder 1 ist.
- 10. Flüssigkristallmischung für Anzeigen mit Multiplexbetrieb, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Mischung mindestens eine Verbindung der Formel (1) gemäss einem der Ansprüche 1-9 enthält.Erregung verändert und dadurch eine für das Auge wahrnehmbare selektive lokale Veränderung des Dielektrikums bewirkt.Dies erfordert Potentiale, deren Grösse unter anderem von dem Grad der Anisotropie der FK-Phase abhängig ist; dieser 5 Anisotropiegrad wird für eine gegebene FK-Substanz allgemein durch die Differenz (À) der Dielektrizitätskonstanten (e) parallel zum elektrischen Feld (e») minus derjenigen senkrecht dazu (ejj, d. h. durch die kurz als DK-Anisotropie oder DKA genannte Beziehung Ae = e.— eJLausgedrückt.10 Bei FK-Anzeigen, die nach dem Prinzip der nematischen Drehzelle [TN = twisted nematic; siehe Helfrich, W. und Schadt, M., Appi. Phys. B. im Bereich von bis zu 106 Bildpunkten pro Anzeige) wesentlichen Matrixadressierung und der damit zusammenhängenden Wünschbarkeit einer möglichst steilen und hohen Schulter der Sprungstelle im Spannungs/Kontrast-Diagramm des flüssigkristallinen Dielektri-30 kums der FK-Anzeige, soll ferner der Wert des Verhältnisses Ae/ ejydein sein; aufgrund des obigen Zahlenbeispiels ist ohne weiteres verständlich, dass man sich diesem Ziel auf zwei Wegen nähern kann, nämlich:(a) Verwendung entsprechender FK-Mischungen aus Sub-35 stanzen mit stark positiver DKA sowie solchen mit schwach positiver oder schwach negativer DKA [siehe z.B. Kmetz, A.R., SED Digest, Tech. Papers IX (1978) 70] ; dies hat besonders den Nachteil, dass die Mischungen zur Bildung smektischer Phasen neigen;40 (b) Verwendung von Substanzen, die im Molekül sowohl eine ausgeprägte Polarisierung in Längsrichtung als auch eine solche in Querrichtung, bezogen auf die allgemein «gestreckte» Form der FK-Moleküle, aufweisen (Osman, M. A., europäische Patentanmeldung, Publikations-Nr. 0 019 665) ; dies hat den Vorteil, 45 dass das Verhältnis À e/ej_ vermindert werden kann durch Erhöhung des e^-Beitrages und nicht oder nicht notwendigerweise durch Verminderung des e -Beitrages des gleichen Moleküls.Die Nachteile der in der genannten europäischen Patentanmeldung beschriebenen Verbindungen liegt in deren relativ 50 hoher Viskosität bzw. deren relativ hohen Schmelzpunkten sowie der meist schwierigen Synthese und/oder geringen Stabilität ; entsprechende Mischungen für FK-Anzeigen mit der dort beschriebenen Substanzklasse sind nicht bekannt geworden bzw. nicht kommerziell erhältlich.
