視覚的認識可能データを捕捉して処理する方法・装置。 【構成】 ビデオ表示部２４はアラビア数字で示される

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】この発明は、一般的に、改良され
たデータ処理システム、特に、データ処理システムとビ
デオ放送システムとをインタフェースするための方法及
びシステムに関する。さらに、この発明は、データ処理
システムの通信の確立における引き続く利用のために放
送ビデオ信号中のテキストまたは数字情報の選択的な捕
捉及び記憶のための方法及びシステムに関する。

【従来の技術】放送ビデオシステムにおける技術水準
は、大変急速に進歩している。例えば、対話型テレビジ
ョンシステムは、現在では、一般に技術的な報告や開示
に記載されており、視聴者が幾つかの水準で放送信号と
対話できる。例えば、双方向通信は、特定のケーブルテ
レビジョンシステムによって可能であり、そこでは、ユ
ーザが購買発注、調査応答、または他の情報を中央デー
タ収集ポイントに送信しかえすことができる。さらに、
ストーリー回線内の複数ポイントで種々のオプションを
選択することにより、且つ、その後で、これらの選択を
特定の放送選択の利用に組み込むことにより、ユーザが
放送された競技や試合の最終的な結果に接することがで
きる、放送テレビジョンシステムが、目下、提案されて
いる。

たシステム内に捕捉された画像をデジタル化するために
利用される。

１月、２９７号、kenneth Mason Publications Limite
d,England) には、いわゆる「フレームグラバ」が記載
されており、それは、約４秒毎にテレビジョン放送信号
から画像を捕捉し、その捕捉画像をデジタル化し、そし
て内部キャラクタと数字の形式での使用のために、捕捉
画像を走査して画像データを解釈する。この特定のシス
テムは、ビデオフレームの最も下の小さな部分の利用に
焦点が当てられ、スクリーンのその部分に典型的に放送
される株式市場相場の捕捉には特に有用であるものとし

【発明が解決しようとする課題】放送ビデオ信号と対話
する現在のシステムの性能のこれらの進歩にもかかわら
ず、このように捕捉されたデータは、未だに、ユーザに
より手動でリコールされ解釈されなければならない。こ
れは、電話番号、住所または電子住所がビデオ信号の一
部分として放送され、また、ユーザが視覚的認識可能デ

ムとビデオ放送システムとをインタフェースするための
改良された方法及びシステムを提供することである。

理システム内で引き続く利用のために、放送ビデオ信号
中のテキストまたは数字情報を選択的に捕捉して記憶す
るための改良された方法及びシステムを提供することで
ある。

【課題を解決するための手段】上述の目的は、以下に記
載されるように達成される。方法及びシステムは、放送
ビデオ信号中の住所または電話番号のような視覚的認識
可能データを捕捉し処理するために開示される。光学的
に認識可能な、テキスト、数字、またはテキストや数字
を表す可視バーコードは、放送ビデオ信号幾つかのフレ
ーム中に送信される。その後、放送ビデオ信号は、受信
され、選択されたビデオフレームは、捕捉されデジタル
化され、ユーザ開始コマンドに応答してタグイメージフ
ァイルフォーマット( ＴＩＦＦ）として記憶される。そ
して、バーコード読み取り器または光学式文字認識処理
は、捕捉されたビデオフレームからテキストや数字デー
タを抽出するために利用され、そのデータは、先の利用
のために記憶される。記載された実施例において、ユー
ザが規定したテンプレートは、光学式文字認識処理を支
援するために利用される。その後、モデムのような付随
する通信装置は、捕捉された電話番号に関連する一連の
ＤＴＭＦトーン（通常は「タッチトーン」として称され
る）を発生することにより、捕捉された電話番号を自動
的に「ダイヤル」するために利用され、データ処理シス

る。

【実施例】以下、図を参照すると、特に、図１には、こ
の発明の方法を実現するために利用されるシステム１０
を示す部分的な概略の絵入りの表現が示される。図示の
ように、システム１０は、複数のビデオフレームからな
るビデオ信号を放送するために利用されるテレビジョン
局１２を含む。そのビデオフレームの少なくとも若干数
は、テキストまたは数字データのような視覚的認識可能
データを含む。ビデオ信号は、放送アンテナ１４を介し
て周知の従来技術を利用して放送され、その後、受信ア
ンテナ１６で受信される。受信アンテナ１６で放送ビデ
オ信号が受信されると、アナログ放送ビデオ信号は、デ
ジタイザー２０を介してテレビジョン受信機２２に結合
される。そして、テレビジョン受信機２２は、周知技術
のように、ビデオ表示部２４に示されるように表示され
る一連のビデオフレームを生成する。

は、アラビア数字で示される電話番号２６や図形的なバ
ーコード２８のような複数のテキストまたは数字情報を
含む。当業者は、電話番号、住所または他のテキストや
数字情報の放送がテレビジョン放送技術を利用してしば
しば達成されることを理解するであろう。しかしなが
ら、この情報がデータ処理システムと外部ロケーション
との間の通信を自動的に確立するために、捕捉されて利
用されうるという如何なる方法やシステムも過去におい
て存在しなかった。
【００１３】以下に詳細に説明するように、遠隔制御装
置３０からの開始コマンドを受信すると、デジタイザー
２０は、図１の参照番号２４に開示されるようなデジタ
ル表示のビデオ表示フレームを捕捉して記憶するために
利用される。そして、このビデオフレームを示すデジタ
ル情報は、ケーブル３２を介してデータ処理システム３
４に結合される。当業者に理解されるように、データ処
理システム３４は、インターナショナルビジネスマシー
ンズコーポレーションのＰＳ／２パーソナルコンピュー
タのような、いわゆる「パーソナル」コンピュータを利
用して実現される。
【００１４】データ処理システム３４は、好ましくは、
キーボード３６及びマウス３８のようなポインティング
デバイスを含み、詳細に説明されるような方法で、放送
ビデオ信号からのテキストまたは数字情報の捕捉及び処
理を支援するために利用される。表示装置４０もデータ
処理システム３４に結合されており、それは、図示のよ
うに、捕捉され処理されたテキストまたは数字情報を表
示するために利用される表示スクリーン４２を有する。
さらに、データ処理システム３４は、当業者に周知のよ
うに、データ処理システム３４を電話システム４４に結
合するために利用されるモデム（図示せず）のような通
信装置を含む。

々の構成要素のサブシステムを表す高級レベルブロック
図が示される。図示のように、遠隔制御装置３０は、好
ましくは、コマンドライブラリ５０内の種々のコマンド
にアクセスするために利用されるキーパッド４８を有す
る。コマンドライブラリー５０は、赤外線送信機５２と
結合され、現在の技術水準の遠隔制御テレビジョンセッ
トにおける種々の命令及び制御機能を選択するために利
用されるのと同様の方法で、デジタイザー２０を動作さ
せるために好適な符号化赤外線送信の送信を開始するた
めに利用される。勿論、遠隔制御装置３０は、設計の選
択事項として、超音波技術や高周波技術を利用すること
により実現可能なことを、当業者は認識するであろう。
【００１６】図２には、デジタイザー２０も示され、好
ましくは、遠隔制御装置３０からの送信コマンドを受信
可能な赤外線受信機５６を含む。遠隔制御装置３０から
の適切なコマンドの受信時に、アナログ−デジタルコン
バータ５８に結合される赤外線受信機５６は、イネーブ
ル信号を発生する。アナログ−デジタルコンバータ５８
には、テレビジョン放送ビデオ信号が結合され、それ
は、受信アンテナ１６（図１参照）で受信され、デジタ
イザー２０を介してテレビジョン受信機２２に供給され
る。放送ビデオ信号の選択されたフレームのデジタル信
号を捕捉した後で、その情報は、バスインタフェース回
路６０及びバス６２を介してデータ処理システム３４内
のプロセッサ６６に供給される。
【００１７】図２のデータ処理システム３４の構成要素
のブロック図を参照すると、放送ビデオ信号の特定のフ
レームのデジタル信号がデータ処理システム３４のメモ
リ構成要素内にプロセッサ６６によって記憶されること
が理解される。図２に示された実施例において、プロセ
ッサ６６は、好ましくは、ダイナミックランダムアクセ
スメモリ（ＤＲＡＭ）６８内に放送ビデオフレームのデ
ジタル信号を記憶する。アドレス発生器７０は、メモリ
６８内にあるこの情報の記憶及び検索の制御のために利
用され、また、メモリ６８内に記憶された放送ビデオ信
号フレームのデジタル信号を繰り返して検索するために
利用され、デジタル−アナログコンバータ７２を介して
表示装置４０にその信号を供給する。このように、放送
ビデオフレームの「静止」表示は、表示装置４０に繰り
返し表示され、ユーザは、そこに含まれるデータに対し
て可視的にアクセスでき、また、以下に詳細が説明され
るように、捕捉された放送ビデオ信号のそのフレーム内
のテキストまたは数字データを編集及び／または訂正す
ることができる。
【００１８】さらに、この発明の重要な態様によれば、
データ処理システム３４は、好ましくは、モデム７４を
含む。当業者にとって明らかなように、モデム７４は、
電話システム４４を介してデータ処理システム３４と外
部ロケーションとの間の通信を自動的に確立するために
利用される。従って、例えば電話番号を含む放送ビデオ
フレーム内のテキストまたは数字データを捕捉した後
に、電話番号の捕捉された桁と対応する一連のＤＴＭＦ
トーン（通常は「タッチトーン」と称される）をモデム
７４に発生させることにより、データ処理システム３４
と外部ロケーションとの間の通信を開始するために、プ
ロセッサ６６が利用される。
【００１９】このように、この発明の方法及びシステム
を利用する時には、ユーザは、テキストまたは数字情報
を含むビデオデータの１フレームの捕捉を遠隔的に開始
し、引き続く利用のために、データのそのフレームを記
憶させる。データの捕捉されたフレームは、そのフレー
ムから抽出されているテキストまたは数字データと共
に、現在の技術水準のデータ処理システムにおいて許容
可能な方法でプロセッサ６６を利用してメモリ６８から
リコールされ、ここに示される新規の方法で、データ処
理システム３４と外部ロケーションとの間の通信を自動
的に確立するために利用される。さらに、当業者にとっ
て明らかなように、自動ダイヤル装置としてモデム７４
を単に利用することによって、データ処理システムユー
ザと外部ロケーションとの間の音声通信が確立される。
【００２０】図３には、この発明の方法を示す高級レベ
ル論理フローチャートが示される。図示のように、この
プロセスは、ブロック８０から開始し、その後、フリー
ズ画像コマンドが遠隔制御装置３０からデジタイザ２０
により受信されたか否かの決定を示すブロック８２に進
む。もし、そうでないならば、フリーズ画像コマンドが
受信される時まで、処理は、単に繰り返す。フリーズ画
像コマンドを受信した後、ブロック８２で決定されるよ
うに、処理は、ブロック８４に進む。ブロック８４は、

ック８８は、上述の捕捉されたビデオフレームからテキ
ストまたは数字データの抽出での利用のために、ユーザ
がテンプレートを規定したか否かの決定を示す。当業者
に理解されるように、ビデオフレームから抽出される数
字データをさらに規定することにより光学式文字認識処
理の効率を増加するために利用される「１−８００−
− 」で始まるテンプレートのような特定の数字
テンプレートをユーザが規定する。さらに、バーコード
読み取り技術の当業者により周知の方法で、特定のバー
コードフレームも、規定されて利用され、これにより、
放送ビデオ信号の捕捉された部分のビデオフレーム中か
らのバーコードの走査及び抽出が容易になる。
【００２２】テンプレートがユーザにより規定される場
合には、処理は、システムメモリからそのテンプレート
の検索を示すブロック９０に進む。その後、またはテン
プレートが規定されない場合には、処理はブロック９２
に進む。ブロック９２は、捕捉されたビデオフレーム内
にバーコードが存在するか否かの決定を示す。もし、そ
うならば、処理は、既知のバーコード走査処理を利用し
てそのバーコードの読み取りを示すブロック１００に進
む。再び、ブロック９２を参照すると、捕捉されたビデ
オフレーム内にバーコードが存在しない場合には、処理
はブロック９４に進む。
【００２３】ブロック９４は、捕捉されたビデオフレー
ム中に数字及び／またはテキストデータが存在するか否
かの決定を示し、もし、そうでないならば、処理はブロ
ック９６に進む。ブロック９６は、データ処理システム
３４を介してユーザに対して、捕捉されたビデオフレー
ム中にバーコード、テキストまたは数字データが存在し
ないことを指示するメッセージの発生を示す。その後、
ブロック９８に示すように、処理は終了する。
【００２４】再びブロック９４を参照すると、捕捉され
たビデオフレーム中に数字またはテキストデータが存在
する場合には、処理は、ブロック１０２に進む。ブロッ
ク１０２は、如何なる周知の光学式文字認識処理を利用
するテキスト及び／または数字データの読み取りを示
す。当業者により理解されるように、ユーザは、マウス
３８または他の適切な手段を利用して、光学式文字認識
のための１ビデオフレームの特定の領域を図形的に示
し、処理の効率を大幅に増加させる。その後、捕捉され
たビデオフレームからテキスト及び／または数字データ
を抽出するために、捕捉されたビデオフレーム中のバー
コードの読み取りまたは光学式文字認識処理の利用の何
れか一方の後で、処理は、ブロック１０４に進む。
【００２５】ブロック１０４は、捕捉されたビデオフレ
ームの検証表示が望まれるか否かの決定を示す。もし、
そうならば、処理は、捕捉されたビデオフレームから抽
出されたテキスト及び／または数字情報の表示を示すブ
ロック１０６に進んで、その後、処理はブロック１０８
に進む。ブロック１０８は、抽出されたテキスト及び／
または数字データが正しいか否かの決定を示し、もし、
そうでないならば、処理はブロック１１０に進む。ブロ
ック１１０は、周知技術の方法で、ユーザがデータ処理
システム３４（図１参照）のマウス３８及び／またはキ
ーボード３６を利用することにより捕捉されたテキスト
及び／または数字データの訂正を示す。例えば、ユーザ
は、特定の数字を選択し、訂正を行うために、その数字
を自動的にインクリメントまたはデクリメントする。
【００２６】それから、抽出されたテキスト及び／また
は数字データを訂正した後に、抽出されたテキスト及び
／または数字データが正しいと決定した後に、または、
ブロック１０４で決定されたように、抽出されたテキス
ト及び／または数字データの検証表示を否定した後に、
処理は、ブロック１１２に進む。ブロック１１２は、捕
捉されたビデオフレームと対応する記憶されたビデオ画
像と共に、抽出されたデータを記憶することをユーザが
望むか否かの決定を示し、もし、そうならば、処理はブ
ロック１１４に進む。
【００２７】ブロック１１４は、画像と共に抽出された
テキスト及び／または数字データの記憶を示し、その
後、または、抽出されたテキスト及び／または数字デー
タを画像と共に記憶することを否定した後で、処理はブ
ロック１１６に進む。ブロック１１６は、この発明の重
要な態様を示し、ユーザが自動ダイヤル処理を指定した
か否かの決定を示す。もし、自動ダイヤル処理が選択さ
れたならば、ブロック１１６で決定されるように、処理
はブロック１１８に進む。ブロック１１８は、電話番号
の事前処理が要求されるか否かの決定を示す。例えば、
抽出された電話番号にパスワード、ローカルアクセス番
号または接頭部を付加することは、必要または望まれる
ことがある。もし、処理が必要または望まれるならば、
処理は、電話番号の事前処理を示すブロック１２０に進
み、その後または事前処理が必要とされない場合には、
処理はブロック１２２に進む。ブロック１２２は、モデ
ムやダイヤル装置を利用して捕捉されたビデオフレーム
から抽出された電話番号のダイヤルを示す。その後、ま
たはブロック１１６で決定されるように自動ダイヤル機
能の利用を否定した後で、処理は、ブロック１２４に進
んで終了する。
【００２８】前述の点から当業者にとって理解されるよ
うに、本願出願人は以下のような新規な方法及びシステ
ムを開発した。それは、テキスト及び／または数字デー
タのような放送ビデオ信号中の視覚的認識可能データが
放送ビデオ信号中の選択されたビデオフレームをデジタ
ル化することにより捕捉され、その後、そのビデオフレ
ームからテキスト及び／または数字データを抽出し、バ
ーコードが放送ビデオ信号に組み込まれて伝送される場
合には、光学式文字認識処理またはバーコード走査技術
を利用する。そし、その情報は、捕捉されたビデオフレ
ームから抽出され、また、捕捉されたビデオフレームと
共に記憶される。これにより、データ処理システム３４
のユーザは、データ処理システム３４と外部ロケーショ
ンとの間の通信を自動的に開始することができる。
【００２９】このように、ローカルテレビジョン局から
の放送ビデオ信号をテレビジョンで見ることができるユ
ーザは、遠隔制御装置３０のような遠隔制御装置を利用
してビデオデータの特定のフレームの捕捉を開始すると

Claims (16)

  1. 【請求項１】 放送ビデオ信号中の視覚的認識可能デー
    タを捕捉して処理するための方法であって、 視覚的認識可能データを含む複数のビデオフレームから
    なる放送ビデオ信号を送信するステップと、 上記放送ビデオ信号を受信するステップと、 上記受信された放送ビデオ信号中、視覚的認識可能デー
    タを含む少なくとも１つのビデオフレームをデータ処理
    システムにより選択的に捕捉して記憶するステップと、 上記視覚的認識可能データを抽出するために、上記デー
    タ処理システム内で上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビ
    デオフレームを処理するステップと、 上記データ処理システムと外部ロケーションとの間の通
    信を自動的に確立するために、上記抽出された視覚的認
    識可能データを利用するステップとからなる方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 請求項１記載の方法であって、 上記放送ビデオ信号を送信するステップは、さらに、光
    学的に認識可能な電話番号を含む複数のビデオフレーム
    からなる放送ビデオ信号を送信するステップからなるこ
    とを特徴とする方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 請求項２記載の方法であって、 上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビデオフレームを処理
    するステップは、上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビデ
    オフレームから上記電話番号を抽出するために光学式文
    字認識処理を利用して上記記憶された少なくとも１つの
    ビデオフレームを走査するステップからなることを特徴
    とする方法。
  4. 【請求項４】 請求項３記載の方法であって、 上記データ処理システムと外部ロケーションとの間の通
    信を自動的に確立するために上記抽出された視覚的認識
    可能データを利用するステップは、上記データ処理シス
    テムと外部ロケーションとの間の電話通信を確立するた
    めに利用される上記電話番号と対応する一連のＤＴＭＦ
    トーンを選択的に発生するステップからなることを特徴
    とする方法。
  5. 【請求項５】 請求項１記載の方法であって、 上記放送ビデオ信号を送信する上記ステップは、さら
    に、電話番号と対応する可視バーコードからなる視覚的
    認識可能データを含む複数のビデオフレームからなる放
    送ビデオ信号を送信するステップからなることを特徴と
    する方法。
  6. 【請求項６】 請求項５記載の方法であって、 上記視覚的認識可能データを抽出するために上記記憶さ
    れた少なくとも１つのビデオフレームを処理する上記ス
    テップは、上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビデオフレ
    ームから上記電話番号を抽出するために、バーコード読
    み取り処理を利用して上記記憶された少なくとも１つの
    ビデオフレームを走査するステップからなることを特徴
    とする方法。
  7. 【請求項７】 請求項６記載の方法であって、 上記データ処理システムと外部ロケーションとの間の通
    信を自動的に確立するために上記抽出された視覚的認識
    可能データを利用する上記ステップは、上記データ処理
    システムと外部ロケーションとの間の電話通信を確立す
    るために利用される上記電話番号と対応する一連のＤＴ
    ＭＦトーンを選択的に発生するステップからなることを
    特徴とする方法。
  8. 【請求項８】 放送ビデオ信号中の視覚的認識可能デー
    タを捕捉して処理するためのシステムであって、 視覚的認識可能データを含む複数のビデオフレームから
    なる放送ビデオ信号を送信するための手段と、 上記放送ビデオ信号を受信するための受信手段と、 上記受信された放送ビデオ信号中、視覚的認識可能デー
    タを含む少なくとも１つのビデオフレームを選択的に捕
    捉して記憶するために上記受信手段に結合されるフレー
    ム捕捉手段と、 上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビデオフレームから上
    記視覚的認識可能データを抽出するために上記フレーム
    捕捉手段に結合された処理手段と、 上記システムと外部ロケーションとの間の通信を自動的
    に確立するために上記抽出された視覚的認識可能データ
    を利用するための上記処理手段に結合された通信手段と
    からなるシステム。
  9. 【請求項９】 請求項８記載のシステムであって、 上記視覚的認識可能データは、光学的に認識可能な電話
    番号からなることを特徴とするシステム。
  10. 【請求項１０】 請求項９記載のシステムであって、 上記処理手段は、上記記憶された少なくとも１つのビデ
    オフレームから上記電話番号を抽出するために光学式文
    字認識処理からなることを特徴とするシステム。
  11. 【請求項１１】 請求項１０記載のシステムであって、 上記通信手段は、上記電話番号と対応するＤＴＭＦトー
    ンを発生するための手段を含むことを特徴とするシステ
    ム。
  12. 【請求項１２】 請求項８記載のシステムであって、 上記視覚的認識可能データは、電話番号と対応する可視
    バーコードからなることを特徴とするシステム。
  13. 【請求項１３】 請求項１２記載のシステムであって、 上記処理手段は、上記可視バーコードを読み取り、上記
    記憶された少なくとも１つのビデオフレームから上記電
    話番号を抽出するためのバーコード読み取り器からなる
    ことを特徴とするシステム。
  14. 【請求項１４】 請求項１３記載のシステムであって、 上記通信手段は、上記電話番号と対応するＤＴＭＦトー
    ンを発生するための手段を含むことを特徴とするシステ
    ム。
  15. 【請求項１５】 請求項８記載のシステムであって、 上記フレーム捕捉手段を選択的に動作させるための遠隔
    制御手段を含むことを特徴とするシステム。
  16. 【請求項１６】 請求項１５記載のシステムであって、 上記遠隔制御手段は、上記フレーム捕捉手段を動作させ
    るためのコマンドシーケンスを含む複数のコマンドシー
    ケンスを送信するための赤外線送信機からなることを特
    徴とするシステム。
