 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

  IMPROVEMENTS 'TO DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS FOR
PRESSURE FLUID BRAKING.

The present invention relates to valve distribution devices for pressurized fluid braking systems, of the type comprising a spool for controlling the entry of the pressurized fluid into the brake cylinders and its exhaust. out of these cylinders -, - this slide being controlled by the movement of a certain number of movable members which move under the combined action of different pressures prevailing at different points of the system, for example in the pipe general, the brake cylinder, the auxiliary reservoir and the control chamber.

Among other functions, the distribution device of the type indicated above controls the charge of the auxiliary tank, a charge valve being provided: for this purpose, to direct an influx of air from the general duct to the auxiliary tank. It is sometimes desirable to design the device in such a way that, when the sum of the forces applied to the moving parts by the pressure of the brake cylinder and that of the auxiliary reservoir (or of the brake pipe) exceeds by a certain amount of the pressure supplied by the control chamber, the charging speed of the auxiliary tank is reduced.

To control this charge flow, a valve or valve is generally provided which is kept open for all the positions of the valve dispensing device between the tightening position and the loosening position, but which- is partially closed when the moving parts move beyond their release position as a result of the excess forces mentioned above and which thus decreased the charging speed of the auxiliary tank.

During this movement beyond the release position to the position which may be called "slowed recharging position", the movable members usually entrain with it. the dispensing drawer as the function of releasing- the drawer must- continue to operate during this time, - the- drawer lights must be extended- so as not to be partially obstructed as a result of the- extra stroke

ment of the drawer. This lengthening of the slots in the drawer requires an increase in the contact surface between the drawer and its seat and leads to a corresponding increase in the friction between these two surfaces in contact. It is advantageous to reduce this friction as much as possible.

This is why, in accordance with the invention, the dispensing device of the type described above is designed so that the continuation of the movement of the movable members beyond the loosening position, up to the slow charge position does not move the drawer beyond the released position.

The thrust of the movable members is transmitted to the drawer preferably by an elastic member and a stopper is provided to prevent any movement of the drawer beyond its released position towards the slowed recharging position.

The stop may be produced in the form of a shoulder projecting from the end of the seat of the drawer which abuts against this shoulder when it is in the released position. According to a variant, the stopper can stop the elastic member.,. when the latter has brought the drawer into the released position, and thus prevent it from dragging the drawer further despite the subsequent displacement of the movable members towards the slowed reloading position.

The invention is shown by way of example in the appended drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 schematically represents an embodiment of an improved dispensing device according to the invention, with the movable parts in the released position.

FIG. 2 represents the dispenser of FIG. 1 with the different parts in the slowed-down recharging position and FIGS. 3 and 4 represent a variant of part of the mechanism of FIGS. 1 and 2 respectively in the loosening and unclamping positions. slow charging.

If we first consider Figures 1 and 2, we see that the distribution device shown in these figures and according to the invention comprises a casing 1 divided into five concentric chambers 2, 5, 11, 13 and 15 by four flexible diaphragms 3, - 10, 12 and 14 which are joined by a common rod 6.

The upper chamber 2 is in constant communication with the control chamber (not shown) through the orifice. 27. This chamber is separated from the drawer chamber 5 by an upper diaphragm 3; in this chamber 5 is mounted the usual drawer 21 as well as its graduation valve 7. This drawer chamber communicates with the auxiliary reservoir (not shown) through the orifice 26 and is limited at its lower end by a diaphragm 10 of which the effective surface is equal to that of the upper diaphragm 3, so that the pressure of the reservoir at
 EMI2.1
xiliary-reigning in this chamber- exerts no influence on the movement of all the diaphragms.

Under the drawer chamber 5 is a third chamber 11 which communicates permanently with the atmosphere through the orifice 20, and under this third chamber, and separated from it by a diaphragm 12 of greater surface area, There is a fourth chamber 13 which constantly communicates through the orifice 19 with the brake cylinder (not shown). The fifth and last chamber-15 separated by a diaphragm 14 of smaller effective surface area from the brake cylinder chamber situated above, communicates-by-channel 18 with the auxiliary reservoir-and communicates also with an intake chamber 17 to which the general pipe is connected.

The communication of the chamber 15 with the intake chamber 17 is controlled at the desired times by a valve 16, the opening and closing of which are controlled by the common stem of the diaphragms.

A collar 22 is integral with the part of the rod 6 which is located inside the drawer chamber 5, this collar for

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

variety also be brought back on the stem; when the set of diaphragms begins to move downward from the loosened position, this collar 22 first operates the scale valve 7 and then the main spool 21 in the usual manner. Another similar collar 8, separated from the second diaphragm 10 by a suitable coil spring 9 and slidable on the rod 6, serves to actuate the graduating valve and the spool in the usual way when all the diaphragms moves up from the clamped position and toward the loosened position.

At the upper end of the drawer seat there is a protruding shoulder 25 against which the drawer abuts in the released position and which prevents it from being pulled beyond this position.

In operation, when all of the diaphragms are in the released position, the valve 16 is kept away from its seat and the auxiliary tank is charged by the general pipe through the lower chamber. 15. As the auxiliary tank charges, the pressure rises in the lower chamber 15 until the upward thrust it exerts on the diaphragm 14, added to the upward thrust exerted on the diaphragm 14. up on the large diaphragm 12 the pressure of the brake cylinder prevailing in the chamber 13, can overcome the thrust exerted by the control chamber downwards in the upper chamber 2.

If this occurs, and as it occurs, the diaphragm assembly continues to move upward and toward the slower recharge position (Figure 2) and decreases the auxiliary tank charge rate by as a result of the braking effect exerted on the air flow by the closing of the valve 16. The protruding shoulder 25 prevents the movement of the diaphragms which continues upwards from causing the displacement of the diaphragm. drawer 21 beyond its released position; there is therefore no need to extend the slots in the drawer.

While the assembly of diaphragms continues its upward movement beyond the released position, the spring 9 interposed between the diaphragm 10 and. the lower collar 8 is compressed and the latter remains in contact with the drawer 21.

According to a variant shown in Figures 3 and 4, instead of using a protruding shoulder to prevent the movement of the drawer from continuing upwards, - provision has been made on the lower flange 8 a protruding flange 23 which cooperates with a stop 25 of the wall of the housing 1 to prevent any upward movement of the flange, and therefore of the drawer beyond the released position.
