Abstract

The subject of the application is a method for preparing ammonium salts containing a (2-alkoxy-2-oxoethyl)trimethylammonium cation and a chloride anion of the general formula 1, wherein R is an unbranched alkyl chain of 6 to 16 carbon atoms in length. In this method, glycine betaine in the zwitterionic form of the general formula 2 is subjected to an alkylation reaction with alkyl chlorides of an alkyl chain length of 6 to 16 carbon atoms in a molar ratio of 1:1.1 to 1:2, preferably 1:1.5 in dimethylformamide with the addition of a catalyst in the form of lithium or sodium iodide in an amount of 0.01 to 0.05, preferably 0.025 mole per mole of betaine, at a temperature of 80°C to 130°C, preferably 100°C, and then the reaction product is isolated.
